Dutch Bakery & Coffee Shop, The718 Fort Street, Victoria
I'll have a Dollar Roll!
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 8:52pm [Dine in]

I've been Dutch Bakery's biggest fan since I was a little boy. Maybe that is why the aging decor and elder clientele make me so happy. Here is all you really need to know:

Everything that comes out of Dutch Bakery is good. Cakes are superb, cookies are delicious. The bright and shining star of this establishment is the Dollar Roll.

The Dollar Roll is approximately 4 inches long and the diameter of a Loonie. Start with a 1/4" bead of whipped cream, wrapped in a piece of cake. Roll this into a layer of marzipan and drizzle with chocolate! There has never been such a delight!

Any visitor to Victoria must try a Dollar Roll. They are only available here. Imitations are not worthy to look at.

Go.

Naam, The2724 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
So delicious it almost broke me!
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 8:39pm [Dine in]

When I lived in Vancouver and found the Naam, I knew everything would be ok.

What happened next was seemingly endless trips for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night snacks (they're open 24 hours!). One night, we got the last bus from downtown to Kits, at at the Naam and then walked home.

One of our binges lasted for several weeks. We spent over $3000 there on blueberry milk shakes, fries with miso gravy, Thai noodles, grilled cheese sandwiches, buckwheat pancakes, and on and on...

Always left full and satiated. Highly recommend.

Post Script: If you get queebed out around hippies you should probably stay away.

Elbow Room, The560 Davie St, Vancouver
Always a treat when I visit!
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 8:33pm [Dine in]

When I'm in Vancouver, breakfast at The Elbow Room is a must! Standard breakfast fare with a splash of West Coast-ism. I have only experience the notoriously foul service once, and I loved it!

Suggest the Benny for breakfast, but anything on the menu will do. Always good to go with friends and family (over 14 years of age). Check out the "star" wall! Everybody has been here!

If you want a taste of contemporary Metro Vancouver, take a bite out of the Elbow Room!

Azuma Sushi615 Yates St, Victoria
Always been happy with food and service
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 8:28pm [Dine in]

Azuma has consistently delivered high quality food as far as I'm concerned. Admittedly, service can be slow on a Friday or Saturday night. When I'm eating sushi/sashimi, I don't mind the chefs taking due care in food preparation. Too fast = poor presentation and texture.

I once had the steak special, and it was delicious. No complaints about any experience here.

Broughton Street Deli648 Broughton Street, Victoria
Used to be the spot!
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 8:25pm [Dine in]

I worked in Downtown Vic for 3 years, 2 blocks from Broughton Deli. We used to get sandwiches for take out and dine in. Staff was friendly and always pleasant to deal with.

My return today yielded an unhappy staff member too busy to help me with my sandwich. No fans or A/C made dining in very uncomfortable. Sandwich was ok, but nothing that Subway or similar couldn't offer.

All in all, I was disappointed for what used to be here. I am guessing management has changed hands and attention to detail combined with friendly service is out the door too.
