De Dutch Pannekoek House3192 Oak Street, Vancouver
Addictive breakfast
Submitted Sunday, February 17, 2008 - 11:26am [Dine in]

After reading some of the reviews of other De Dutch restaurants, I felt compelled to write about my positive experiences with the one on Oak St. at 16th. I've been eating brunch there now and then for more than a year, and it remains a special treat (partly because of the admittedly high price). The pancakes are consistently delicious, and once you find your favorite toppings and stroop (dutch syrup), you'll not be disappointed. I stumbled across the apples and DeBakon pancake early on and it's still by far my favorite. If you order a boring menu item, it will be indeed be boring. Order what they are known for: the pancakes. I have always had very friendly and prompt service, despite the restaurant's popularity on weekends. Give it a try, you'll probably enjoy it.

My Favorite All-around Restaurant
Submitted Saturday, January 19, 2008 - 5:28pm [Dine in]

I discovered Tomato when I was living near Cambie and it was located at Cambie and 17th. I preferred the ambience of that space, but the food has only improved since they went to Kits. The price category really should be $20-30, though. The food is worth every cent. Everything I have had there is hearty, delicious, and comforting. Perfectly cooked meats and vegetables, sophisticated without any pretension. This place is perhaps my favorite in Vancouver!

A pleasant surprise
Submitted Saturday, January 19, 2008 - 1:16pm [Dine in]

We didn't know what to expect from this restuarant, but were pleasantly surprised. Every dish we ordered was savory and rich, and we couldn't resist dessert even though the portions of dinner were very generous. Ended up spending quite a lot, but as a special treat it's a great choice.

Delicious Dim Sum
Submitted Saturday, January 19, 2008 - 12:29pm [Dine in]

I have had Sim Sum here three times. I even brought relatives because I was so impressed with the quality of the food. Every dumpling is delicious, and the broth is devine.

The only down-side is the mild chaos and the lack of real ambience. In trying to avoid kitsch, they came up with a decor that is cold and awkward, but the warmth of the food makes up for it. Service is friendly and efficient, although there are so many waitstaff it can feel like they are hovering, and you wonder how they keep things straight! Ordering is difficult if you don't read the language, so we simply asked the server for advice, and were not disappointed.
