Great place for lunch colleagues
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 3:30pm [Dine in]

Two of us just had lunch there.

It took us awhile to decide what to eat .. the waiting staff were very patient with us.

We finally ordered two items from the dim sum selection .. green onions pancake and green pepper stuffed with shrimp. We also ordered the Singing Chicken(which the staff explained to us that it meant the sizzling noise made the serving dish is opened), rice and green tea.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food and service was great (as mentioned above they let us take our time to decide what to order even though the restaurant was full).

For weekday lunches I would recommend making a reservation .. which we had done even though it was for two of us.

One weak point was they don't have a Takeout menu and no web-site where you can peruse the menu so that it's easier to make a decision on what to eat.

Also the restaurant felt cold inside .. maybe because of the big windows which face the new Shangri-la Vancouver complex.

Not too much value for money
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 1:37pm [Dine in]

Recently we have ordered takeout twice.

Plain naans with Fish Coconut curry and Chicken Vindaloo.

Both times the naans were burnt. The first time for the two curries they NEVER asked us the spice level so it was quite bland. So, next time we asked for medium .. still not that spicy.

Service is quite slow .. whenever we came to pick the takeout the food was ready but it took them 10 mins to give the change even though the restaurant was empty @ 6pm.

Went there about a month ago with hubby for a early dinner on Saturday night.

We had one of the deluxe meals .. the one with sweet corn soup with diced chicken, stir-fried shangai noddles with chicken and green beans with XO sauce, a vegetarian dish with mixed vegatables and vegetarian chicken and finished off with a mango pudding.

So much food we had that we took a doggy bag home ... it was strange though the portion we took away had shrunk in size from what was in serving dishes.

We thoughly enjoyed all of the food except for the vegetarian chicken which tasted rubbery and weird. Tea was filled up quickly.
However we had wait a bit for glasses of water and forks ... had to ask a few waiters before we got them.

Pub in UBC campus

Been there a few times.

Selection of food is better than other pubs.

Quite busy on Friday and Saturday nights especially when term starts. Service is good .. Good selection of beers.

Enjoy the live music on Thursday and Friday nights ... hopefully they will have one for Saturday night soon.

A real Japanese Restaurant in UBC
Submitted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 3:50pm [Dine in]

Have been there alot of times.

Food is great ... better than other Japanese Restaurants in Point Grey and Kits(could because the chef/owner are Japanese and not Chinese).

There are always willingly to do subsitutions .. don't like Calfornia roll in the Bento box it can be replaced by Adegashi Tofu(3 pieces).

The only downside is slow service .. even if you order takeout(to pick up) it takes at least 15 mins to pay your bill.

Best Singapore Laksa in Vancouver
Submitted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 3:43pm [Dine in]

We usually got to this place at least once a month to fix our spice cravings.

The waiters know us quite well as we usually order Singapore Laksa for lunch(only) ... it's literally the best one in Vancouver.

Other times we have ordered satay(chicken and lamb), sayur lemak. I've gone with work colleagues and have had the lunch combinations. All of the food has been great!!

I don't understand while Georgia Straight and Vancouver Courier always rate Banana leaf better than Tropkia. I've been to both of these restaurants and always Tropika has better food and service.

The two of us went there for dinner last week on Friday.
Luckily we had made a booking there ... as alot of people were waiting for a table.

Both of us had the small chicken souvlak which had rice, potatoes, greek salad, pita bread with titzaki. The rice was salty and buttery.

We have been there before when service was extremely slow .. but it has improved significantly now.

Not that hot!!
Submitted Wednesday, November 21, 2007 - 3:07pm [Dine in]

Went there 3 weeks ago with 12 people.

Service was extremely slow .. maybe because it was full and on a Saturday night. Food was ok ... two of us had the Chicken Bento box(didn't feel well later in the weekend .. maybe the chicken was well cooked or the salad/california rolls weren't handled properly).
The others had All - You - Can -Eat .. don't think they ate enough for what they paid.

Definitely not going back there .. not worth the value of money even with the All - You - Can -Eat.

Nice spicy food
Submitted Sunday, July 15, 2007 - 7:39pm [Dine in]

Finally we decided to try this place. Friends who had been there didn't like it.

Since we were both craving for spicy food ... so why not try it??

The owner/manager greeted us like we were long lost friends. We arrived there @ 6pm on a Friday ...
about 5 people were already and by 7:30pm(when we left) lots of people had come.

We ordered the fried aspagrus, mushroom and ped pods(hot and sour) and chicken with cashews.
Spice level = medium.
Tea and cold water were given immediately upon sitting down. Mins later we were told not aspagrus so it will be replaced by broocli.

The food arrived with a big bowl of jasmine rice ... shocked as most Asian restaurants give very little rice. Aha our spice craving for the night was satisified. Left-overs(except for the rice) was taken and finished for lunch the next day.

The staff were very attentive and filled our water glasses continously.

I still don't know why our friends didn't like this place ... maybe they don't like spicy food??
Well we are good back there.

Best masala dosas in the city
Submitted Sunday, July 15, 2007 - 7:29pm [Dine in]

A few days hubby and I went ... even though it's a long drive for us.

Our timing was great since we got seats ... people who came after us had to wait flor at least 15 - 30 mins. So remember to make a reservation especially on Monday nights when all dosas are for $5.95.

We had masala dosas and idils ... was being of East Indian ethinicity we loved it (nearly as good as the ones in Bangalore).

The service was a bit slow .. the server explained they were short of 2 staff members.

All of the other patrons were enjoying themselves and people didn't mind waiting for the food to arrive (as it was piping hot when it came so this meant the food was fresh).
