This is not a place that it use to be
Submitted Friday, August 10, 2012 - 10:19pm [Dine in]

I had the 4 dish combo with a party of 5. Chose the prawn and tofu soup. The prawn was so fishy.... it was obviously frozen ones. Almost to the point it was freezed fried. I almost had to spit it out. The soup tasted foul also. More or less just soy sauce and corn starch. Had the sweet and sour pork. This is so salty. This is not shanghainese style at all. The only dish was the smoked duck. Even the white rice was disgusting. I hope this place close down soon.

Grand opening today...
Submitted Wednesday, August 1, 2012 - 12:25am [Dine in]

I got an invite to the grand opening today. I got to say today's flavor was spot on for everything. I had the chicken, both kinds of ribs, pulled pork, beans, slaw... bang one. Live music helps too. The place was rocking... As long as the quality keeps up. Downtown has a new bbq must go place.

saw on DDD so i gave it a try..what a fail..
Submitted Wednesday, May 23, 2012 - 6:11pm [Dine in]

I had their signature porchetta salsa Verde sandwich. Man was it dry and flavorless. It was pretty hard to swallow. Sure looks good but the bread was the stiffest bread I ever had. I had to eat the sandwich with the soda so i can swallow it. I swear the bread cut my mouth also. For $13 for a small sandwich and soda it was way way over priced for downtown east side area. Should be $5 with a drink and I still won't come back. I blame this place to be busy by stupid social media hype. One of the worse food I had in the world in the last few years.

The soda is terrible. It's way too sweet. Doesn't matter if it's made with corn syrup instead of the synthetic stuff. The orange soda I was should be watered down with a liter of water. I felt like i was forced to drink juice concentrate.

But the place sure looks great. And when you order your sandwich. No one tells you which one is yours. Even when there's less then 4 ppl ordering they act like they are super busy by chatting with each other.

good place to get a feel of asia...
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 11:26am [Dine in]

a lot of reviewers missed the point of how you are suppose to get the atmosphere of asia in asian restaurant. I mean do you want sushi served to you in a western dining atmosphere?? wait.. some ppl do.. for i don't know what reason. As i don't think anyone would go to McDonald's for sushi either.

We all come here for their greasy food and cheap beer. As simple as that sounds people seem to miss that point. $3 for a bottle of beer is cheap. After 9pm the have the late night dishes that is around $5-$6 which is amazing. If you order $20 or more you can get the special of quale for $6 or prawns for $3.

they also make congee with the consistency that your mom wish she can make. Late night, cheap beer, greasy food and good congee. Hard to ask for more...

And stop complaining about service. Would you work for such thin profit? Tip your waitress well... she'll be nicer next time.

you have to know how to eat properly at this place..
Submitted Friday, April 2, 2010 - 1:14am [Dine in]

first of all... there are many 2 for 1 coupons everywhere.. from local newspaper, magazine to entertainment book. At the regular price with no coupon. It's how much a steak should cost with meat this quality. Trust me... you cannot get meat like this at costco. I think other people is comparing this place to other chain restaurant like earls or keg. It's fine for reg ppl if you think meat is meat. For first timers you need to listen to the server's instruction on how to cook the meat properly. u need to keep it moving or you'll over cook it. Remember, you are cooking it as you're eating it. Once you mastered it. Every piece you eat will be perfect cooked and as good as it gets. I'm sorry to say but i think because of this concept, this is at times better then gothem, mortons and Hy's. If you think this is just costco meat then you should be more happy at earls or cactus club.

what did i line up so long for????
Submitted Sunday, March 28, 2010 - 8:22pm [Dine in]

I went to Santouka with 4 other friends so we can order all different kinds of ramen. Lets just say I would never come back here again. The noodle taste like raw dough. The soup was super greasy and salty but lack any flavor. I hope it was because they just opened and had some problem with equipment because if not they would not last till the end of the summer. Good luck..... avoid at all cost.

good food. very solid..
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 5:12am [Dine in]

I went there for dinner and had the chef's 5 course meal for $44. The amuse bouche was a quail pate.. not bad.. first app was the duck confit.. great flavor. Second course was a squid course.. perfectly done. Tender and flavorful. Last app was pork tenderloin. It taste like a typical pork tenderloin at a wedding or a typical hotel entree. For the entree I chose the beef wellington ..... one of the most tender beef i ever had. Simply amazing... Then had the apple pie for dessert.. this is one big meal. I'm not a small guy but i was stuffed. This place is in a dodgy area.. down the street there was a guy warming his hands with a propane tank with flames shooting out of it and a guy walking by telling me I have a nice car. I would not send a female to the area on her own for sure. Great place for a meal.. nice and quiet. Good for dates!

this place has been in business since 1984.. and it shows.. so don't expect a crazy nice place.. but i mean .. the price hasn't change much since then either..
for $8.95 you get soup or salad, a steak, veg, mash or baked potato and garlic bread.
I ordered the prime rib.. it was pretty good. Won't be the best you had but it's good. Tender and tasty.. better then any diner for sure.
My friend had a pepper steak and that wasn't super but it was also solid.
My other friend had the sirloin and it was okay... the best was the prime rib.
For under $10 for a full meal... this is hard to beat... i think they kept the price the same for the last 20 yrs.... $1.60 for apple pie? how do they pay the rent???

i had the chocolate orange cake the other night.. i been eating this cake for many years. This time it was dry, frosting was hard, 30% smaller, no whipped creme and service took for ever. I went there on a friday night that there was seats available right away. Now i know why.

This has been one of my fav place to go for many year... i think due to the change in god knows what (owner, management, chef?). I rather have cake from safeway for 1/4 of the price and 4x the flavor..

i travel extensively around china yearly and i know how proper this food should taste. I had the lan chau hand pulled beef noodle, chives pan fried pocket, hot and sour soup, and steamed dumpling. The hot and sour soup and stand with the best of them i ever had. Can't get any better then this. The beef noodle is on par with most ones i had in china. Not the best but I think as good as you can get outside of china. The chives pocket is very good. Nice and solid. The steam dumpling is good. Juicy with perfect amount of soup inside. Taste great. Not the best i ever had. But better then a lot of other. Can't complain at all. If I was in the area, I would go again. if I was in the area. I think alot of previous review was unfair because if they know what real chinese food should taste like.... they would know better to compare to manchu wok.

Good if you can sit by the sushi bar.,..
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 4:08am [Dine in]

I went there a while back and had the best time when i sat at the sushi bar with the younger sushi chef. The older one is not as fun and his skills is not as good. But the sushi and sashimi is super fresh and huge. I think i had the best chopped scallop cone i ever had in my life. He chopped the scallop in front of me and mixed in all the sauce and tobiko. Super fresh.... He cut the salmon sashimi into roses shape. It's taste even better then the regular shape sashimi. I just told him make a plate of sashimi and it was honestly the best i ever had in my life. Presentation was amazing and i walked out with only a $20 bill. If i can find out when that guy works there i only go back when he's there... yes.. sushi is best eaten on the spot when it's fresh..

I come here very often because they always have a fridge full of cold asahi beer. most of their dishes are good but not super. But the food quality is very consistent. Service is great. Their boneless chicken wing is awesome. Crunchy tasty just right. Ebi mayo is awesome... but i think at times it's getting smaller and smaller.... the goyza is okay.. i had better.. but it's up there. Value here is great... nothing over priced and never pretend more then they are. Great place to relax and have a drink. Way better then any bar around downtown.... can't go wrong here!

i only like the beer there...
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 3:50am [Dine in]

I went there on a tuesday evening just past 6pm. I was maybe on of 4 tables... pretty empty there. I order beer first... I got the 2L bottle of Asahi. Good stuff... not like most other places that have the 750ml that is made in China. This one is made in Japan.Taste cleaner... Then our first dish of the chopped clam came. There's a shell that came on the plate but it's only that. The chopped cooked clam is bought from some place...not made on the spot for sure. They taste exactly same as all typical all-you-can eat fake abalone sushi. The second dish is udon with tobiko. Honestly it's only that... anyone can make it at home. The grilled squid was good.. but taste cold. I think it was made ahead of time but just put on the stove just making it warm enough to serve because it's cold inside. Also the chopped scallop salmon sushi came. The chopped scallop is good but tiny portion. Salmon is good. I think it's the same size as the picture in the menu. Rice is under cooked. The last was the wagu beef. The beef was pretty good. But nothing you can't get anywhere else. Best of the night was the beer. Very disappointing. I wish i went to Guu. This place cost double of Guu yet not even 1/2 as good as guu. Atmosphere is lacking as it is ran by chinese there's no real izakaya atmosphere. Try the real stuff at Guu or Goyza king.

I had a few slices. One of smoky pepperoni, Cajun bird, clams and garlic, and patata and bacon. I don't think i had pizza better anywhere else. And i had pizza from all over the world. I live in a Italian neighborhood and I know what good authentic pizza should taste like. For $3 a slice it's well worth it. There is cheaper pizza but this is gourmet pizza at it's best. $3 is a bargain. If anyone is around the grandville island area, give it a try.

best salmon ever....
Submitted Friday, June 13, 2008 - 12:37am [Dine in]

I live in this Burnaby most of my life and been here quite a few times. I went there for the Salmon special for dinner tonight. $5.95 for grilled salmon, potatoes, rice and salad. Not only the price is great but the Salmon was the best I ever had. The outside was grilled to a crisp and inside was the most moist salmon I ever had. I always order a diet coke with a slice of lime. Most of the time at cactus club they always for get the first time or by the refill. Not only did it came with my diet coke the first time but on the refill with a different waitress. I don't know how they keep track of my lime request but it was pretty amazing for a restaurant at this price. I also watch game 4 of the NBA finals here. So the TV was a great plus. With other ppl cheering the game on (unlike other bars with drunk ppl) it had great atmosphere. If you're hungry and live in the area.... this place is a sure bet.

it was okay..
Submitted Monday, January 7, 2008 - 1:02am [Dine in]

i been there twice... one a few years ago.. and i was pretty upset when i left. How can a waiter tell me to make sure i tip on the total bill before the discount. I think that's pretty damn rude. So a few years has past and i gave them another try. The risotto was maybe instant rice quality.. a bit over salty so i can't taste anything and the pasta was way too oily. Gave me an upset stomach. The waiters there make me feel like i'm being served by a bitchy uncle. The mood was ruined by constant loud phone rings and a guy at the bar keep on restarting his computer with the speaker turned all the way up so i can hear the windown start up music..

i read other ppl's reviews and saw that the 3 course special was a good deal so i order the salad, stake/fries, and dessert. It was good solid food. Can't complain about it for $21. The only better french bistro food with as good price was in Montreal. The fois gras was awesome and the cheese plate was also pretty good. I brought my own bottle of wine and paid $12 for bottle service. Not bad... if you have a nice bottle of wine, well worth it. Go try it out.....

Submitted Sunday, October 29, 2006 - 2:51pm [Dine in]

i would recommend this place if you want to grab a quick bite in the area. Service is never great. Food is never bad. The shashimi is always on the pretty good side. Sushi is not huge like samurai but has the right taste and texture. I would not go out of my way to eat here. But if i'm in the area and wants sushi, this is one of the better choice in the area!
