Busy place, good food
Submitted Saturday, April 23, 2011 - 3:02pm [Dine in]

I've been here several times now for lunch and dinner and even had delivery. On every visit, the restaurant was fully occupied with no empty tables. This place is busy. On our last visit for lunch, by the time it was 12:00, the lineups had started forming. By 12:30, the lineup was over 15+ people long.

For lunch, the portions are decent size from the lemon chicken to the green beans. You can't go wrong with the Shanghai juicy dumplings. The roti was excellent. For dinner, we've tried almost half the menu and everything was excellent from the Meat Stuffed Pastry to the House Special Fried Rice to the Honey Prawn.

On the down side, the food was very slow to arrive each time we were there; maybe over 30-40 minutes. On one occasion, the server asked us if we were finished eating when in fact only 1 out of our 4 dishes had even arrived. Note to the establishment: if you would like a faster turnover rate, you need to get more chefs and/or a bigger kitchen so that people don't need to wait 40 mins for their food and you will have more turnover.

On the plus side, on our last visit, I noticed a patron had taken a table up without ordering for 30 mins while he waited for his friend to arrive. Meanwhile, the lineup outside was very long. To my surprise, no one pressured the person holding up the table for 30 minutes to order (which wouldn't have been unreasonable to do). Depending on your point of view, this could be a positive (unless you are one of the customers waiting outside for 30 min for a table). All said, the service wasn't bad but it wasn't stellar due mostly to the slowness of getting the food to us. The servers in generally are always running around but for the most part are decent. I would rate service 3.5.

Ambiance isn't very good. We often felt like sardines as there are lot of people squished in a small space and sometimes bumping into our chairs. The room isn't well decorated; the tables and chairs are very minimalist.

Despite the long lineups and slow service, people keep coming back in numbers. There is a simple reason; the food is great (as it certainly isn't because of the ambiance or fast service). I have no doubt that if they moved to a bigger location with a bigger kitchen and more staff, they would do even better. We will go back. We just have to make sure that we get there really early.

Very Fine Chinese Restaurant
Submitted Thursday, April 7, 2011 - 9:19pm [Dine in]

I've eatened here several times now for dinner and dim sum. I am rating this restaurant on par with the other high end Chinese restaurants in town. Gargows are large and plump. The beef balls are tender and delicious. Fried rolls are crispy on the outside, delicious on the inside. Water chestnut dessert was one of the best I've ever had. Rice rolls were perfectly done. All of our dishes were cooked to perfection (in our opinion). We ordered lots of food and normally I would take the extras to go. But this time, I left no extras and just ate (over-ate) everything because it was so good.

Service was on par for a high end Chinese restaurant. Our empty plates were removed promptly. Didn't have any problems with getting a waiter when needed. The decor is in good condition and the dining area is clean. It is on par for a high end Chinese restaurant.

There's a reason why there are consistently long lineups to eat here. Customers are, for most part, happy.

Consistently Good Quality Food, Service, and Ambiance
Submitted Saturday, February 19, 2011 - 1:13am [Dine in]

Whenever we run out of new Asian restaurants to try, we always come back to Sun Sui Wah. I've never had a bad meal here. The food quality is top notch. Service is usually excellent. I would give the service a 4.5. Empty plates are cleared promptly. The decor is nice and the restaurant is clean. We go for the dim sum and for the dinner. The baked tapioca dessert is my favorite dessert there. Squab, cod, and lobster are my favorite dinner dishes.

This restaurant sets the bar which I use to compare other Asian restaurants against.

This is one of my favorite places for lunch. The food is quite tasty. Portions are decent. Prices are reasonable. Service is good. I usually order the 2 or 3 item entree or the baked ox tongue on rice. The interior is nice and clean.

The main drawback is the location. There is very little free parking in the area. Otherwise, very solid; no complaints.

Not so good
Submitted Sunday, November 28, 2010 - 12:22pm [Dine in]

We like Vietnamese noodles and we keep walking by this place whenever we go to Peaceful restaurant nearby. This time we decided to come here for dinner. Unfortunately, the service was not good and there were issues with the food. The fried roll that we ordered had some obvious non-food pieces found inside it. The server seldomly acknowledged us in any way; even when taking our order, we can see that she didn't want to be there. I tried waving her down twice for the bill and she would see me but never acknowledged me so I had no idea if she was going to come back to our table. It wasn't until the man from the kitchen (owner?) asked her to give us our bill 5 minutes later that she came by with the bill. We won't be back. Those are the reasons behind my food and service ratings. Value was about the same as all other similar restaurants so I rated it with an average score. I have to give the ambiance a below average rating because the restaurant was not particularly clean, the furniture is old and the menus looked like they were many years old. Prices were written in ink and a lot of it was smudged or faded off and I couldn't read it.

Favorite Lunch Place
Submitted Sunday, November 28, 2010 - 11:55am [Dine in]

One of my favorite lunch places. I seem to go weekly these days. Great value, great selection, and relatively good quality. There is plenty to choose from but I only need to eat 20% of the selection before I am stuffed. My favorites are the hargow and egg tarts. There is a nice selection of popular dim sum items at the dim sum table. In addition, there is a dessert table, a soup table, 2 appetizer/salad/fruit tables (that includes cold shrimp and mussels), and 2 main course tables.

The Chocolate Hazelnut Zuccotto is why I come here.

However, I think this is the first place that I have rated Service as a 1. I have been here about 5 times. Twice for take out and three times for sit in. Each time I go there for sit in, I tell myself that I won't come back.

Like other reviews, I found the service to be terrible or non-existent. For the latest visit, we got sat down by the server and got our menus. After that, no one would come by to take our order. After 15 minutes, we had to get up and line up at the counter to talk to someone. For some reason, the person at the counter ignored us despite me trying to make eye contact with her and she tried to help the people lining up behind us who clearly just walked in not too long ago. That was really weird. We didn't get service until I yelled out loud that we have some questions and have been sitting for 15 minutes. I was ready to leave. In the end, we stayed and got our cakes. If I had my way, I would have left. The experience was really bad as usual and I probably won't step in there again.

One more thing. In a previous visit where I ordered a small Chocolate Hazelnut Zuccotto for Father's Day, they made a mistake and prepared me a large one. So not wanting the large cake for a party of four, I asked them to just sell me a small one that they already had on hand and write the Father's Day greeting onto it. It took them 30 minutes to do that. I sat in the cafe for 30 minutes staring into space as I waited. I have no idea why it took 30 minutes to put writing on a cake. They probably forgot about me and only remembered after they noticed that I was sitting in the cafe for 30 minutes looking at them.

Unique sushi sports bar
Submitted Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 2:31pm [Dine in]

My date and I came here on a Thursday night around 9pm. The restaurant was packed with people. The patrons were mostly college age. As expected, it was a party atmosphere. It was loud.

The table we sat at was tiny. It was like a table for one. We sat about 1 foot away from the next table. It was not comfortable. Looking around, almost every table had ordered alcohol. This is definitely not a family restaurant. It was more like a sports bar with loud music, a bunch of TV's, young party-goers, and a big alcoholic bar. The restaurant was full of beautiful people both patrons and waitresses. When it comes to the waitresses, this place is like the Earl's or Cactus Club of sushi. I would have rated the ambiance a 3 but I'm bumping it up because of the beautiful waitresses and female patrons.

After we ordered, we had to wait about an hour before the food arrived. I wasn't happy with the service because it took a very very long time for the food to arrive and to get the bill. Basically, it took a very long time to get access to our server.

Generally the food was good except for the bowl of rice which was either overcooked or just old. Because of this, I'm bumping the food rating down to a 3.

My date didn't like the experience because of the service and the ambiance. She does not want to return. For me, I would return if I came with a group of people who want to drink. scream, and party.

I've been here a few times over the years. Usually, I come here with my volleyball team after some beach volleyball at Spanish Banks. The team's favorite menu item was the salmon burger.

Today, I took my parents there. Needless to say, as this place is a bar and grill, it seems to cater to the younger trendy crowd. We didn't feel at home but that's ok since we came for the food! The food didn't dissapoint. I ordered the Island lamb after reading about it in a previous review here. It was an excellent choice. Very nice, soft, and tender. My mom and dad ordered the salmon filet and the steak and shrimp. The common consensus was that the food was excellent. My only complaint was that the corn bread was a little bit burnt. Otherwise, everything was delicious.

Service started out really really slow. That was because there was only 1 waiter and 1 bartender serving the entire restaurant. WTH? Can't they afford to hire more staff? It was a Saturday afternoon. Despite the understaffing, the waiter worked hard to please us and was very friendly and checked on us as much as he could. Water and coffee was refilled without needing to ask. Despite only having 1 waiter covering the whole restaurant, the service was surprisingly excellent. The waiter was friendly, smiled lots, and was very interactive. I guess we got lucky this day.

The ambiance was nice and cozy. The TV screens help keep people entertained. However, the men's bathroom needs some work.

I'll definitely continue to go back there after our volleyball games.

I've been here a few times before. The most recent time, I took my parents. I ordered the Yorkshire pudding with roast beef and my parents had the salmon and beef stew. We all agreed that our food was delicious. I want to go back and have more Yorkshhire pudding. The prices were reasonable. Unlike at many of the other restaurants that I've reviewed, I have no complaints about the service here.

I've been here several times for lunch. The food was excellent for the money. I usually order the meat dishes with beef, pork, and chicken. Service was inconsistent. At times, it was very poor. At other times, it was good. Prices were good and so I end up ordering dessert after the main meal.

Hamburger Mary's Diner1202 Davie Street, Vancouver
Good burgers, bad service
Submitted Wednesday, November 14, 2007 - 12:03am [Dine in]

When I'm in a mood for a burger, I think of coming here. Unfortunately, the service has been declining.

The last time I went there, it took a few minutes for someone to notice us and seat us even though the restaurant was not completely full. A male waiter, who looked totally uninterested in his job, seated us without saying a word. After we were seated, it took another 10 minutes before the waiter took our order. I specifically tried to make eye contact with the waiter and noted that the waiter did not make eye contact. I ordered my favorite which is the bison burger. After we ordered, we waited a good 35-40 minutes before the food arrived. During this time, the waiter would often socialized with his friends at another table. About 20-25 minutes after we ordered, our waiter went outside for his 15 minute break. WTF?

After he came back from his break, he went to the kitchen and brought out our food to our table. I couldn't understand if the food actually took this long to prepare (35-40 minutes) or if it was sitting in the kitchen for 15 minutes while our waiter took his 15 minute break. I took a bite of my burger to see if it was still warm and it was slightly warm and not completely cold. I was a little bit annoyed but the burger tasted good so that made up for the lousy service.

Throughout the meal, the waiter did not come by once to ask us how we were doing or if we wanted anything. He kept going to sit down with his friends at the other table. I had to flag him down once to get water. Then after 10 minutes after we had finished eating, we waited for our server to bring us our bill. He never came. I had to get out of my chair and walk over to the table where he was socializing to ask for my bill.

Absolutely horrible service. I would rank the service as poor but the food is solid. Overall, I would rate this restaurant as decent. Although I liked the food, this last experience will keep me away for a while.

Food is good, service is not.
Submitted Monday, July 2, 2007 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

I use to eat lunch here regularly because the food was inexpensive, quick to arrive, and good for what it is. I enjoyed the food but because the service was hit and miss (more often it was poor), I have stopped eating here based on principle.

Too often the servers were disinterested in their jobs and had frowns on their faces. Other times, they screwed up my order. Some days, they screwed up the same order more than once (How is that even possible?) . For example, I would order hot coffee and a pho dishes. They would bring me a cold coffee and the wrong pho dish. That's just not acceptable. Not all servers were poor though. Some were decent. There were times when I wanted to just tip one of the servers but not the other.

I rated the food a 4 assuming that 3 is the average for a pho restaurant. I do think that the pho and other food here is better than or equal to the average pho place. If it wasn't for the poor service, I would continue to eat there.

Great Service
Submitted Monday, July 2, 2007 - 10:05pm [Dine in]

Located just a few blocks away from the other Cafe Crepes, my experience at this location was completely different than at the other one. The service was top notch here. The server was friendly and checked up on us regularly. Service was prompt.

The seating was comfortable and the atmosphere was pleasant. My only complaint about the ambiance would be that some of the booth seats were repaired with duct tape.

For what it is, the crepes were nice. I usually like to order the chocolate, walnut, banana, and coconut crepe. Given that an average crepe place would have a food rating of 3, I would rate the food here as 3.5-4.0 so I'll round it up to 4.

Slow Service
Submitted Saturday, June 30, 2007 - 11:46pm [Dine in]

Took my parents here for a late dinner. The restaurant looked nice and we were comfortably seated. The food was fine for a fine dining restaurant. The only complaint I would have was the slow and poor service. Our server was always socializing to people at other tables (while we were waiting for service) or would disappear somewhere. It took around 15 minutes to clear our table after we finished eating and another 15 minutes to get the dessert menu. After we finished eating it took another 15 minutes for me to flag the server down to get our bill. For a fine dining restaurant, I had to flag the server down far too often to get coffee refills, or to get the dessert menu or to get the bill. We spent probably 45 minutes of idle time waiting for service (not waiting for food, but waiting for service) when the restaurant was not busy. This is not satisfactory.

I enjoyed dinner here. After being disappointed in the service provided by so many places lately, it was refreshing to find a place that had pleasant and good service. As the title says, our server was enthusiastic, and friendly, and checked up on us very often. For a change, I never once had to flag anyone down as someone was always there asking if we needed anything.

Food quality and presentation was well done for what it is. Seating was comfortable. For an informal restaurant, it was a good dining experience.

Takes too long for food to arrive
Submitted Saturday, June 30, 2007 - 11:23pm [Dine in]

The title basically sums up my experience. On a work day (Friday), my coworkers and I went there for lunch. We waited about 45 minutes after we ordered before the food started arriving. But that's not all, the food arrived one order at a time over a span of 20 minutes. By the time that the 3rd person got their food, the first person had finished eating. The last order arrived about a hour after we ordered. Needless to say, we were really really late going back to work.

Good crepes, not so good service
Submitted Saturday, June 30, 2007 - 11:15pm [Dine in]

We went there for crepes on a Sunday afternoon. The food arrived in good time. I had wanted to ask for some water near the start but it wasn't until the food arrived that I had a chance to.

After our food had arrived and I had asked for water, the server was pretty much non-existent. No one asked me if I wanted more coffee or if I needed anything throughout the lunch. The water never arrived. I flagged the server down and asked for my water again. By the time I finished eating, it was time to ask for the bill so I flagged the server down again and asked for the bill and asked for my water again. The water did finally arrive with my bill. The server drop the bill off onto the table without saying a word or making eye contact. After all this, I remained calm and friendly so I'm not sure what I did to deserve the cold treatment.

The crepes were nice though.

Father's Day
Submitted Sunday, June 17, 2007 - 5:02pm [Dine in]

It was Father's Day. We came here because the other places in the area were all full. This restaurant was empty so I thought we could have a nice quiet lunch.

Unfortunately, the lunch menu was limited. When it was time to order, we found out that what we wanted to order on the menu was not available for lunch. So we ended up ordering something else. Our entrees came with fries. Unfortunately what came out were burnt fries. Not sure if that's just the way they are suppose to be but they were so burnt, I couldn't even put my fork through it. They were really not edible as everyone at the table left their fries untouched at the end of the meal.

The server would ask us how was everything or if we wanted coffee but didn't really wait to hear my answer before leaving. A few times I did want more coffee or I did want to say that the fries were burnt but didn't get a chance.

I thought to myself that it is too bad that this place did not have better food or service as the ambiance was quite nice. When I left I realized why this restaurant was practically empty on Father's Day while the other restaurants were packed.
