New owner, new cooks, higher prices & less quality
Submitted Thursday, April 5, 2012 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

Starting April 2012, a new owner took over with new cooks. The menu looks similar except the prices. If you enjoyed the crunchy chow mein before, you'll be disappointed. The new cook doesn't make them crunchy anymore and cooks them with way too much oil. It had been good for several years but it's time for a new lunch place.

Where's the beef? Right here!
Submitted Friday, October 7, 2011 - 9:46am [Dine in]

It's not a fancy place but clean and bright. Service can be slow when busy but they respond once you catch their attention. Been there a dozen times in the last year. I've tried takeout several times, too. When they say that the order will be ready at a certain time, it is. My favorite is the beef noodle. I like it so much that when I'm hungry enough I ask for extra beef. That costs $2 but worth it. Another favorite is the curry beef brisket on rice. The brisket is always tender and the portion is generous. As their name suggests, beef is what they are good at.

High class setup; OK food
Submitted Thursday, February 24, 2011 - 2:01pm [Dine in]

Ambiance - Modern design, high ceiling, classical music, lots of space between tables & nice china.

Service - At this price range, I expected better. But when requested, service was prompt.

Dim Sum - They do use fresh quality ingredients. Good presentation. However, some items were bland. Bone-in chicken had a lot of small bone fragments.

Value - Price ranges from $4.50(small), $4,95(med), $5.25(lg) to $5.50(sp) plus 3 dozen chef specials @ $6.50 to $9.98. Ha Gow is a large, Siu Mai is a medium while rice roll is a special. I would go again but only with the early bird 20% discount.

Quality stuff
Submitted Friday, February 11, 2011 - 11:45am [Dine in]

Ambiance: Nicely decorated. Small with around 30 seats. Good for dates.

Service: Great smile & attentive.

Food: Fried oysters(4 thick pieces) nicely done; good presentation. Prawn tempura - would prefer thinner batter and a wider dip bowl. Sockeye sashimi - two different cuts with distinct texture & taste. Seaweed salad - decent portion without overpowering sauce. Toro sashimi was the best. I don't remember having any of this quality at that price. At the end of the meal, the chef sent over some sockeye belly sashimi in form of a rose. That was a nice touch and well appreciated.

Value: Even though that the price range is listed as $15-$30, it fits well with $15 or less. Most of the prices are comparable to Sushi Town & Sushi Garden. However, the nigiri pieces are slightly smaller but if you want quality something has to give.

Note: Watch your first step into the restaurant. It's not leveled with the street.

Hard to beat
Submitted Friday, December 10, 2010 - 12:14pm [Dine in]

Comfortable and spacious setting. Service was very freindly & attentive. Price was very reasonable. Food was tasty and portions were generous. The lamb was quite tender and will definitely go back for it. The only flaw was the baked french onion soup. It was not heated evenly - one bite cold & one bite scolding hot. Overall, nothing spectacular but it's hard to beat in this economy.

Not bad
Submitted Monday, December 6, 2010 - 9:34pm [Dine in]

It's not big place and they try to maximize the seat count, so don't expect a lot of space. The seats are just wooden crates with cushions glued to the top. It's a good way to encourage a faster turn-over. The service is nice & quick. Thanks to the previous reviews, I ordered extra noodle for a dollar more. It was just right for me. The sumo size(50 cents for 50% more noodle) option is not on the menu but a wall poster. If your regular portion is around the size of a big mac combo, then you will need the dollar extra. The pork was a bit dry but good flavour. Will go back if in the area for a quick bite.

Open 10 to 10 and on its way to a perfect 10.
Submitted Sunday, December 5, 2010 - 11:48am [Dine in]

They open at 10 in the morning - great alternative to dim sum. The place is clean & bright. Been there 3 times. The service is among the best in this type of restaurants. The waitresses are efficient with a very friendly attitude. Doesn't matter how many items you order, they just memorize without using an order pad. Food wise, the portions can be bigger but well compensated in quality. The meats are full of flavour and of the better cut. Tons of selections in the menu. Some of the braised items can be salty but then they should go with rice or noodle. My only real complaint is when you are seated close to the washroom, every time someone goes in and out of the washroom, you get a big whiff of the strong air fresher.

Qaulity food in a neighbourhood setting
Submitted Tuesday, July 13, 2010 - 2:00pm [Dine in]

Been there a few times for breakfast & lunch, eat-in & take-out and never disappointed. Food ranges from a simple breakfast with 2 eggs/sausages or bacon/baguette/sauteed potatoes @ $6.50 to Duck confit with orange sauce & choice of soup/green salad/fries @ 13.50. My last order was a sandwich with boneless beef short ribs/caramelized onion/horsesdish @ $10. The baguette was stuffed with tender meat, the onion was not the greasy kind and the soup of the day was creamy and flavourful. As a medium eater, I am full with just 1/2 order. They used to open M-F only. But after enough whining customers they are now opening one Sat a month. You have to appreicate their time away from their children. The place is clean, not very big - 8 to 10 tables. When it's busy, be patient with Isabelle. She will get to you. They deliver, too, for orders(min $15) in by 11:30am. There are only 2 things to watch out for - avoid the french fries and make sure that you say Isabelle's name right.

This place does not offer any 2-for-1 deals but you get a lot more toppings and fresher ingredients. The pizza crust is softer but not soggy. Even overnight, you can have them cold without damagng your teeth. I like their sub, too. With 5 toppings, it was so packed that I had a hard time biting into it. Now I go to the 2-for-1 places for pizzas to entertain my cheap friends and I go to Hot Oven for myself.

Ambiance: Small, maybe less than 12 seats inside with a couple of tables outside. Clean & comfortable.
Food: Fresh, good portion, quick.
Service: Good, helpful with a smile.
Value: $2.99 for a 10oz glass of organic OJ. What do you think?
I have only tried their breakfast. They also offer daily specials that are not on the menu. Can't wait to try their cabobs & burgers.

More good than bad
Submitted Monday, August 3, 2009 - 11:46pm [Dine in]

Two of us arrived at 6pm. on a holiday and were seated right away. The setting is quite welcoming & relaxing. The servers were very pleasant, always with a smile. We ordered soft-shell crab, prawn & yam tempura, house roll, spicy scallop roll, deluxe sashimi, spicy salmon sashimi & a couple of maki. All came to $55 after tax. Ingredients were fresh. Portions were above average. The soft-shell crab was just right, not soggy at all. The deluxe sashimi offered the best value. The sauce on the spicy scallop roll was just simple hot sauce. The prawn tempura was cold. Later, I found out that they were pre-made sitting behind the chef station. By 7pm., the restaurant was filling up. It became harder and harder to get service. After receiving my credit card, it took them 10 minutes to prepare the slip. Overall, for the value & ambiance they offer, I can definitely tolerate some slow service.

Just as good at the new location
Submitted Saturday, August 30, 2008 - 3:45am [Dine in]

They have just opened their new 3110 Boundary location for only 2 weeks but are already busy as ever. The 3 of us got there on a Friday passed 8pm. and had to wait 15 minutes. During the wait, two waiters assured us that we would get a table soon and a waitress brought us menus. This new location has a modern look. Other than the traditional Chinese Paintings, you would not know that it's a Chinese restaurant. We ordered Steamed Pork Juicy Buns($6.50), Fried Garlic Lamb Slices($13.50), Half Braised Duck w/Mixed Vegetables($13.50), and Curried Sliced Chicken Chow($8)Mein. The fried lamb was served with a very tasty spicy sauce. The duck dish already came with half a duck and for only $13.50 it still came with a very generous portion of veggies. The only complaint is that the chow mein portion was smaller than average. Nothing to complain about service, the waiters were very attentive. A lot of similar restaurants don't have good ventilations in the kitchen and customers leave smelling like their food. No such a problem here. Will definitely come back.

Good selection of authentic chinese soup
Submitted Sunday, February 10, 2008 - 4:08pm [Dine in]

With completion coming from next door, it's now a lot easier to get a table even on the weekend for dim sum. When it's not busy, they only keep a few items ready. But I just order what I like and it usually take only a few minutes. The price is above average but the size is bigger & you get better ingredients. Dinner quality is average but they have a few interesting menu items. Their specialty is the soup. Quite a few selections and very rich in flavour. These are not your typical chinese banquet soups.

Submitted Saturday, February 2, 2008 - 4:57pm [Dine in]

Whenever I feel like having some decent seafood at a great price, this is where I go. Even with lobsters, you have the option of a set price for each instead of by weight. They have better seafood selection than a lot of the so called seafood restaurants and definitely better price, too. When it comes to meat, my first choice is the lamb hot pot. The lamb is so tender. Unfortunately, it not always available. A couple of times, I was told that it's not in season. If you go for dinner, be sure to check their specials. I hope it's still on. For every $20 order, you can order one of the 4 or 5 special dishes at a deep discount. I took advantage of that last time there and ordered 6 dishes: oyster, squid/cuttle fish combo, shrimp, clam, fish & ostrich. The total before tips including rice & tax was $62. Beat that!

They are at least maintaining their past standards. At dim sum, if you don't see what you want, ask any waitress and they will gladly order for you. One sad news is that they no longer open late. They close at 11pm now.

Submitted Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - 9:17pm [Dine in]

Two of us went for dinner on a Wed nitght. Got there at 6:30 and was half full. It is small - maybe 40 seats with 5 bar seats by the chef station and another 5 facing the street. Orders came within 15 minutes. The price to portion ratio is just above average. The dragonfly roll was pretty good. So were the spicy tuna sashimi and the spicy scallop roll. But the baked oyster was disappointing. The cheese sauce and the filling were quite tasty. But the oyster itself has no taste. The soft shell crab was soggy and the smallest I've ever had. By 7pm, it was filling up and with only 2 waitresses, the service went downhill. They forgot our order of bbq salmon head and belly which was slightly over-cooked. But it was so crispy I could eat some of the bones like crackers. And I quite liked the sauce that came with it. Overall, I would come back but likely as a backup to Sushi Garden.

I've been there several times but only for their late nite. On weekends, they charge an additional dollar. The menu is not extensive. However, whatever you order, they come quickly and the cooked items always seem freshly prepared. They take reservation and is definitely recommended for the weekends. Service is ok but sometimes you have to make an effort to catch their attention.

Their beef is so popular, sometime they sell out before the end of the day. The soup is great. Definitely not the MSG mixture. For those who want to cut back on carb, you can order just the beef in soup or beef/tendon combo in soup. They all come in two sizes just like the noodle. The only complaint is that they don't have a take-out menu.

The dim sum was good. But I think Kirin(I've tried Downtown & Cambie) is slightly better in both taste and presentation and cheaper. But Top Gun's location is great for me. There's free parking. I can grocery shop afterwards. The market also has an excellent BBQ shop. In a previous review, a discount was mentioned. Top Gun gives a discount if you finish you meal and pay your bill before noon - 10% on weekends and 20% on weekdays.
