My Greek Taverna6450 120 Street, Surrey
Another fantastic Greek restaurant
Submitted Monday, November 9, 2009 - 9:16am [Dine in]

After enjoying a fabulous meal at the Coquitlam location on Saturday night, hubbie said let's check out the Surrey location the following night. Again we were greeted by friendly servers and nice smiles. We began with our usual calamari appetizer. Wow again we received a healthy portion of yummy fresh calamari with their signature tzatziki for dipping. We decided to try the humous which was on special for $3.99 and that was quite good as well with plenty of hot pita. We all ordered roast lamb and the enormous plates arrived with generous servings of lamb, those yummy lemon flavored potatoes, greek salad and rice - on one plate only since two of us asked for extra potatoes instead of rice. Again there was no way I was going to get through that entire plate. These are family owned restaurants and we just couldn't decide which one we preferred more.

The Best Greek Food
Submitted Saturday, November 7, 2009 - 10:36pm [Dine in]

We decided to celebrate my brother's birthday dinner here today after reading these reviews. We were all very impressed by the quality and quantity of food together with the impeccable service. We all started off with calamari appetizers which were melt in your mouth freshness. The tzatziki was wonderful too. The plate could have been a dinner in itself. Three of us ordered roast lamb which, upon first bite, was startling in its flavour and freshness. There was no way I was going to get through all that food. Potatoes were perfect with a burst of lemon aftertaste, salad was good too. The kids plates were plentiful and the chicken brochette looked amazing as well. The waitress brought over a piece of cake with a candle and we all sang happy birthday. No one rushed us even though the restaurant was filling up. We can't wait to go back again and there's no need to ever return to Stepho's now.

Not worth the high prices

After reading such great reviews, I dragged hubby over here for lunch today. I was a bit hesitant when we walked in with only one waitress serving the entire restaurant and the service was a bit uncomfortable. Normally we would get served miso soup right after after ordering but the waitress was busy at other tables. We did get tea served pretty quick. We ordered the seaweed salad which was good although outrageous at $5 for such a small portion. We ordered several rolls and the only yummy roll was the dragon roll which was a scallop roll with generous amounts of unagi on top with fish eggs at $11.95. We mentioned to the waitress when she first took our order that we specifically did not want anything with california roll inside and she served us a rainbow roll which was exactly that with some sashimi and blackened avocado on top, very unappetizing and I couldn't eat any of it, mostly it was left over. We noted that it was listed on the bill even though it should have been removed. The chef did prepare us a small tuna/salmon tataki appetizer which was good and on the house but by that time we had made up our minds not to return.

Maguro Japanese Restaurant10090 152nd Street, #141, Surrey
nothing like Maguro in Ladner
Submitted Monday, August 24, 2009 - 4:35pm [Dine in]

Now I understand why there are no reviews for this restaurant. There is really not much to say. Hubbie had no time in his day to drive out to Maguro's in Ladner where we usually go and love. I decided to have him do the ordering and I would try a few of his rolls if they looked decent. The negitoro roll was adequate although maybe a bit too creamy for my liking. The unagi roll at $4.95 should have more unagi in it. The caterpillar roll is described as unagi on the inside with avocado on top. We were disappointed that it was more of a california roll. It seems like most sushi restaurants are using california rolls as the base for most of their fancy rolls. We were given a roll on the house which was probably the best part. It was again a california roll with spicy tuna on top. Also ordered was our usual seaweed salad and that was quite good as well. Our son ordered the roll combo which was pretty standard and not tempting. The plus side is that the rolls are not full of rice. Oh well, still on the lookout for something better close to home although I won't be surprised if hubbie drags me there again when the sushi craving arises.

new Sehmi on Fraser Highway so much better!
Submitted Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 6:31pm [Dine in]

This afternoon I dragged hubbie and son to the new Sehmi sushi spot several weeks after having an unsuccessful experience at the older location. After having our usual miso soups, we ordered the squid tempura which was incredible for calamari lovers. Yes it was deep fried and a bit greasy, but the portion, freshness and taste surpassed that. We ordered the tokyo roll which is tuna and salmon sashimi with yam tempura inside a roll which sits on top of a sweet & spicy sauce, so good. My son ordered the salmon combo which looked like sockeye salmon and very fresh. Also ordered was a calamari roll, an eel roll and a negitoro roll all very good. Tea was served and replenished and service was friendly. We are definitely returning to the new Sehmi very soon.

After seeing some reviews for Akane, I dragged my husband and son here today for a late lunch. We sat down and were nicely greeted and served hot tea. We placed our orders and were served hot miso soups. I ordered the spicy chirashi which would have been okay had there been some fish noticeable in there with all that salad. Tiny pieces of raw fish I had to search for amidst all the green lettuce and there was only a small portion of rice which was a bit hard. Husband ordered a few rolls which were okay and son ordered some salmon rolls and BC Rolls which looked pretty good. The seaweed salad was the best part, really good. Our server brought over a 4 piece yam roll and said it was on the house. We decided it's not worth going back.

Submitted Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 8:31pm [Dine in]

I was looking forward to visiting Momo Sushi again for their chirashi and I was very disappointed by some of the quality of the fish. Some of the pieces were hard and a couple were slightly off. When I told one waitress about the meal she smiled and ignored me. Then I told another waitress who offered to change it for me. In the end, they gave me some seaweed on the house. My hands smelled fishy all afternoon.

Good Neighborhood Sushi
Submitted Friday, July 17, 2009 - 6:50pm [Dine in]

After noticing this small sushi restaurant right by my new dentist, I decided to pick up a menu to bring home and show my husband. He was in the mood for sushi the next day and went on his own while my son and I were gallavanting in downtown Vancouver and eating lunch at Momo's Sushi. He was very impressed and took photos in order to tempt me and his twitter followers to visit. There were some creative rolls which we have been ordering at other sushi restaurants for awhile now and at prices which seem to reflect what you get. He took me there for lunch today with my son & his friend and I noticed they had a big variety of menu items, some of which were quite different. There were several specials of the day, which also had bubble tea included, and were a little different than your normal california roll type items. They had several deep fried rolls as well as all your standard rolls and the waitress was happy to explain them all. It's a small comfortable place where you can drop by and eat alone or with friends & family. It's not gourmet sushi & sashimi but terrific for a quick sushi fix and we'll soon find out what the sushi pizza photo displayed on the wall is.

Hiroshi's Sushi Creations3720 Oak Street, Vancouver
Unique
Submitted Friday, July 10, 2009 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

My friend and I have seen great reviews of Hiroshi's and were finally able to visit when this place was open. We arrived at 11:30 am and immediately ordered the lunch creation special and seawood salad to share. The sushi looked authentic and tasted delicious. We looked at each other and ordered two more rolls plus a takeout order. Although we were never served any tea, it was overlooked by the quality of the food in front of us. The rolls were the perfect size and the sushi rice was done just right. We are totally looking forward to going back but it will have to be during the week as they are not open on weekends. The bill of $20 for two was laughable as well..

Friendly Place

We finally visited Sumo Sushi today and it was a pleasant experience. We ordered some of the fancier rolls and they were quite inventive. Although many of them were pictured with sauces, we asked for minimal sauce and it was perfect. The seaweed salad is fantastic, perfect for a hot summer day. The Hawaiian roll was tasty as was the Sexy roll. The prices seem to correspond with what you get. Service was very good along with a great cup of tea.

Yummy
Submitted Sunday, June 21, 2009 - 7:20pm [Dine in]

Wow to today's sushi meal - you have to know what to order and after many visits we seem to zero in on the dragon roll and Murrayville Fever roll with the seawood salad. Yes the akadashi tofu is very good and some of the sashimi looks fantastic. The house roll and rainbow roll are also recommended. Even the green tea is better than most places. They always give you something on the house like spring rolls and watermelon for dessert. It is a friendly place and your photo will be added to the ceiling or walls during one of your visits. There is just no point in eating sushi downtown anymore. I am always disappointed like yesterday's visit to Ajishai in Kerrisdale. Nikko's is not perfect - like your food order may not arrive at the same time but it is so much more preferable to eat perfect sushi rice with fresh tasting fish than some of the mushy horrible stuff I've eaten downtown lately.

Disappointed
Submitted Sunday, June 21, 2009 - 2:40pm [Dine in]

I was looking forward to revisiting Ajisai's after a delicious lunch there awhile back. Boy were we disappointed. We ordered two roll combos and the sushi rice was all mushy and the rolls were falling apart with not that much in them. We all looked at each other and pretty much said we couldn't eat anymore after a few pieces. I got up and told the waitress and sushi chef that it wasn't really edible. They seemed totally surprised. They asked if they could make it again for us so I agreed. Although the rolls looked a bit more presentable the taste was not there and the rolls were still falling apart. We are spoiled by Maguro's in Ladner and Nikko's in Langley and I now appreciate those places so much more. I brought my husband a few leftover pieces and after a couple of bites threw it in the garbage. A cute little place but we won't be back.

We were quickly seated after 10:00 pm Friday night, all of us starving. The waiter was quite helpful and quick offering us two large bowls of caesar and garden salads. Yes there was too much dressing on the salads. The bread was fresh and hot and seemed to be homemade. We ordered two servings of the special calamari and I have to say it was really different, fresh with a light breading with simmered peppers at the bottom of the pan. We all dug in. We ordered pastas and pizzas and although not true gourmet food it was decent. The seafood linguine was not cooked properly as it was a bit mushy. The seafood, especially the scallops, was quite good. The pizza looked pretty good and was served square instead of round. The wine list was definitely lacking for sure although the caesar drink was top notch. All in all a pleasant experience although not absolutely dying to return.

We travel here from Surrey for top notch sushi! I can't eat sushi in downtown Vancouver anymore. Very interesting rolls and the chefs are happy to make anything you suggest. Today we asked for something with spicy tuna and scallops and it was such a delicious creation Hojin the owner came up with. Sashimi melts in your mouth with freshness. I wish Hojin would open up a place downtown so I could go everyday.
