No Fun!

Comfortable atmosphere, nice decor, good service. Kitchen in the back of the restaurant sounds busy, phone's ringing a lot but never understood who's calling this establishment. I wasn't sure I understood it, who was calling all the time! My friends thought that perhaps the owner was calling his own phone during the evening, never saw one person of Asian influence walk in the place!

Yup, that's just about it, because the food wasn't very good. Been there, done that, had enough!

Tasteless Greek Taverna
Submitted Sunday, August 14, 2011 - 11:47pm [Dine in]

Wow! Just found out that there's a new owner in town.

Dissapointing Saganaki, the cheese was stiff and had to be cut with a sharp knife and the food isn't prepared in the same manner. It was just a small slab of unbearable sour and salty cheese.

The Hummus wasn't consistent in quality and it was definitely lacking any garlic base! Let's not forget to comment on the pita bread; it was like it was toasted for customers before we arrived, they didn't eat it so they re-heated it again and served it to us! (blah).

The Arni Psito (lamb dish) isn't tender like it used to be, the portions are smaller and the price is too high for what you receive.

For a Sunday evening the restaurant was busy but not like it once was.

My overall experience tonight was hindered by the fact that the food was no longer up to par. Double thumbs down and my toes in my shoes were delivering the same message, "ten toes down"!

After 30 years of wonderful and tasty Greek food - this was disastrous!

Tasty Dishes For The Value
Submitted Tuesday, April 5, 2011 - 9:05pm [Dine in]

When I first went to Pho 101 I didn't think that much of the food but I've frequented this establishment on a regular basis with friends and family. It always takes a bit of time to establish the taste and dishes that a restaurant puts out.

The Pho soups are tasty and abundant in ingredients, their soup stock is tasty as opposed to other Pho restaurants. The vermicelli dishes are loaded with bbq flavours of beef, chicken or port and lots of food on the plate for the value.

The staff are very friendly and are always easy to oblige to your every request. The ambiance is clean but the atmosphere is a little on the cold side; they could use another door in the long hallway to keep the draft out and the heat inside. The large windows allow alot of natural light into the restaurant but a little colour on the walls would brighten the atmosphere.

Nice place to get together for a bite.

Banana Leaf's Gone Stale...
Submitted Monday, March 28, 2011 - 3:35pm [Dine in]

Had a small get-together on Friday evening... the food isn't as tasty as it once used to be. My family friends said, "the other restaurant on Broadway has better tasting food", I think I'll have to give it a "go".

The cocunut rice has no abundant aroma of coconut, unless they just pour a little coconut milk into the rice when it's boiling which would make this dish bland to the taste anyways.

The roti canai is just okay, it's way better at Tropika! The appetizers were pleasant and we enjoyed them more than the main dishes, smaller bite sizes make the taste and flavour jump out at you.

"What's with all the peanuts in everything"? I don't understand the whole and crushed peanuts in every food dish, if it doesn't say "peanuts" in the menu for the dish item, then don't put them in. You kill the palate, and it over-powers every dish!

Nuts in the mango ice cream - what the hell? Nuts in the fried banana with vanilla ice cream - again, what the hell?

Bland, bland, bland...

Sticky Fingers...
Submitted Tuesday, March 1, 2011 - 1:09am [Dine in]

When I was a kid the Valley Bakery was a treat! You could smell the aroma of fresh baked bread on a Saturday morning. The taste of sweet treats were enjoyed by all the kids going in the store with their parents.

The staff were friendly and nice... older staff that is! They used to offer the kids a whole baked fresh cookie, not the stale day or two old cookies that sit forever in the shelf tray now.

The breads aren't the same, there are too many choices and not enough home fresh ingredients, too many cut corners. The whipped cream doesn't taste the same as it once did.

Store looks the same but it isn't the same. Like everything else, we have to adapt to the times...

Too bad, so sad ~

Wah Lun4524 Hastings Street, Burnaby
The Ol' Dragon Inn
Submitted Tuesday, March 1, 2011 - 12:46am [Dine in]

Yes folks, this used to be the old Dragon Inn restaurant... the original signage frame still exists, the Dragon's long gone though.

This restaurant is now the Wah Lun restaurant and this has to be the best Burnaby Heights' Dim Sum eatery.

Gone are the serving carts, that was my favourite part of the Dim Sum experience but it's true that so much food probably went to waste and the hygiene factor has to be taken into consideration, but that's what the charm was all about.

The Dim Sum variety is abundant, the service is very good, the ambiance is clean and lively, though the acoustics are poor but afterall it's a family atmosphere, and it's friendly.

The prices are comparable to other establishments in the Metrotown and Vancouver area. I like it and eat there almost every second to third weekend with my family.

Give it a try if you like Dim Sum.

Rehanah's Roti Hut - Call Ahead for Food
Submitted Tuesday, March 1, 2011 - 12:22am [Dine in]

If Rehanah was able to open her door more often, then this would be a great place to eat but the hours of operation vary, and she can be sold out of food at a moments notice.

If she's busy with a catering order... her door will be closed. I find this to be a bit of nuisance and I've wondered how she's kept her business afloat for all these years?

Perhaps a small takeout window is all Rehanah requires because the ambiance is terrible, so if you're ever sitting in her establishment, make sure you eat your food and look out the front window.

Peckinpah was truly tasteless!
Submitted Monday, February 21, 2011 - 11:05pm [Dine in]

A couple of my friends and I decided upon trying the Peckinpah restaurant in Gastown Sunday evening, we noticed that the establishment was packed and we ended up sitting at the bar.

We were invited with a taste of a few beer samples from the taps, and ended up with a decent brew - the brew was the best part of the evening because the meal was tasteless. I didn't know what the meaning of "Peckinpah" was and decided to educate myself by asking the waiter/server... got a brief though glorified account of Sam Peckinpah... ain't "fluff" grande?

Okay, time to get to the meal. I ordered the Short Beef Ribs combo; got a side of creamy coleslaw and creamy beans, along with a couple of slivers of corn bread. The short beef ribs weren't even remotely attached to the rib bones, I didn't understand what they were doing in my paper-lined platter! The beef wasn't warm and I began to chew on a piece of cold "fat"... the beef was tasteless so I had to soak the meat with their house special vinegar and meat sauce to actually get some flavour but the flavour was smoked meat sauce with a subtle hint of vinegar swishing around in my mouth.

I usually get my beef ribs warm at other establishments. I was rather disgusted for the amount of money I paid for a full-serving of beef ribs, and "two" short beef ribs constitutes a full serving. The creamy slaw wasn't too bad but I didn't think much of the creamy beans, I'd rather enjoy a serving of traditional Heinz bbq beans from a can... bleh!

Nope, not a second time - even if the meal were "on the house" - there are far better bbq restaurants in this city.

Good food, a bit pricey!
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 8:42am [Dine in]

Overall rating is good, the service is outstanding, the prices need to be adjusted to this day and age of what people look for in terms of value for the money.

Good location, next to the Inn - business is busy at most times. Nice ambiance, very clean, courteous staff. Fireplace adds a nice touch. Booths could use a bit more space, but it's all okay.

Sure, I'd come back to this restaurant.

Tropika2975 Cambie Street, Vancouver
Bland to say the least!
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 8:22am [Dine in]

My family and friends used to dine at Tropika on Cambie on several occassions in the past. On Sunday evening we decided on something different, other than Chinese food. In my opening statement, let me just say that Tropika isn't worth the price for the meal we ate.

The service has "tanked" and although we had reservations and it was fairly quiet for the first half hour, we felt rushed to end our evening so that management could begin a bidding war on our table!

The fragrance of the rice is no more; the vegetable dish tasted bland; the fish was mainly bones and curry strewn all over it; I'd have to say that I'm better off going to the local Chinese restaurant in my neighbourhood and order a bowl of wor wonton soup and call it an evening.

This is definitely the last time we encounter what they deem as a taste of the difference. The prices are too high for the amount of food you receive. I understand that restaurants are vying for business, perhaps Tropika needs to scale down on the items on their menu and concentrate on the few that show some promise.

Thanks, but no thanks!

What's Classic got to do with the name?
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 5:10pm [Dine in]

Limited breakfast menu, probably one of the most expensive breakfast platters available on a weekday morning. Don't ever order a cup of coffee, not only is it $2.50 for a cup, the server doesn't come around often enough to give you a refill, but this has to be one of the worst tasting coffee... even with 4 packets of sugar, the bitterness jolted my tongue!

Ordered the same twice, toast is burnt... absolutely not yummy! For 9 buck$ I got 3 (cornish game hen sized) eggs, burnt toast and hashbrowns, oh... and a big-assed serving of ketchup.

Perhaps a side of fruit would begin or end the meal with something a bit tart. "15% gratuity is not included" states the bill. There has got to be a better place to get a hearty breakfast.

The food has become tastier, the service is quick, the management is good. Nice to see friendly staff, courteous and helpful if you require an opinion on ordering food which you're not sure of.

Nice restaurant for family get-togethers. I see lots of orders for delivery or pick-up, that tells you that people enjoy the food. They serve a good hearty bowl of: Duck with wonton and noodle soup - very generous portion.

Not Worth It!
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 4:50pm [Dine in]

Well, the renovations are over... the ambiance is crowded, loud and busy. The quality of the food isn't worth it anymore! They've finally invested in some new dishes, but the portions have become miniscule, finger-food sized sums it up.

Is it worth it? No, not at all. I have nothing good or nice to say, so I'll leave it at that.

Good Dosa's
Submitted Monday, September 1, 2008 - 10:51pm [Dine in]

The Dosa is the best meal to eat for those in a hurry and don't want curry!

The sweets are very good, especially the gulab jamon and the gelebi... okay, so I'm biased 'cause I like them the most.

I've been there with family and friends, and we consider it good value for quality food.

The restrooms could use some regular cleaning though!

Bleh!
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 12:27pm [Dine in]

Lousy ambiance in the restaurant itself, dark and gloomy, lots of TV's everywhere! We decided to eat outside on the patio... the ground was unlevel, my (cheap) stool kept on wavering, no matter what position I moved it to. Too many smokers on the patio, where is the law?

How hard is it to make a steak medium rare? Apparently the steak was incorrect more than 2 times, I gave up after the second time... They were polite to take the charge of my drink and food off the tab!

Once bitten, twice shy, no thanks, not again! Wouldn't even recommend it to anyone else!

Bleh!

Fresh lively menu! Tasty mouth-watering portions! Excellent food presentation - an art in itself!

The prices are well-managed to other Sushi establishments in town. The host and server greets you with a smile, a long-forgotten art with many eateries in this day and age.

Definitely a place to go to again, and try the varieties and selection of the food.

Two thumbs-up!!!

Rub a dub - lousy grub!!!
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 11:35am [Dine in]

Once this eatery changed its infamous "chicken" logo, the food went down the tank!

The new "Red Seal Chefs" have got to be fired! Your ads on TV are a stark reminder of how drab the experience is going to be while dining at the Newly-priced White Spot!

The service is terrible! What happened to the counter bar? Where is the family atmosphere? Where is the quality of the burger with triple-o sauce? Where is the affordability?

It's all been replaced with longer wait times, useless service, cattle-run seating, longer food preparation, dirty washrooms, oh... and better yet, higher prices!

Could I order a Pirates Pack too?

Dine-in is best!
Submitted Monday, August 18, 2008 - 11:12am [Dine in]

My family has enjoyed Cockney Kings over the past few decades, the ambiance has remained the same, the food and portions have slightly changed over time, but that's to be expected when an establishment grows out of popularity.

My advice is to eat-in and not take-out, the portion size of the oysters are a disaster, and the chips are extremely greasy! I've become more aware of the food served these days, and prefer less oils in my food, but it is "fish and chips" afterall!

I believe it's time to make the restaurant a little livelier - more natural light is required for a more open dining experience, and cleaning-up the dirty dishes requires more attention.

All-in-all I'd have to say that it's good food, and better known for All-you-can-eat...

No, the food isn't that good! If one gets heartburn, then you have to move on...!

I was shopping in their store, and parked in their parking stall, and my car was nearly towed away!

I've noticed that some of the canned goods are old, dusty and god knows how long and where they've come from.

If you want real Persian food, head over to Lonsdale in North Vancouver... if Persians eat there, then it's good food.
