Red Burrito1455 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver
Didn't think it could get this bad!

Wow - so there are places out there that I never considered to really be Mexican cuisine, like the Mexican fast food you find at the food court. After the Red Burrito I'd rather eat at any Taco chain. The ingredients in our burritos were rancid and everything that was supposed to be piping hot was cold. They also screwed it all up entirely, where we took time to be very specific and careful.

Even though we were starving most of the food we chucked. We should have just insisted on a full refund but we were dumbfounded at how terrible the food was. The guy who recommended this to me must not like me very much!

Denny's500 Austin Ave, Coquitlam
Solid place for a late night (or early morning) breakfast

Ok, so it's Denny's.. well believe it or not, if the people working there *really* don't care enough it can be an awful experience. This one seems to be run well and the server I've had most times is a nice lady who does her job well. The food is cooked as it should be and arrives quickly. After a tip I'm usually paying close to $20 which isn't the best value really at all.. but I guess it's more a convenience than anything to have a decent meal done properly at strange hours with a smile. I'll return for sure.

It started with a wonderful caesar salad...

And as dinner progressed, the table of 3 I was at had become quiet. Each of us was taking our first bite of the pasta dishes we ordered. I had the lasagna and was at first quite surprised by how much grease was floating on top. Was the meat not drained well, or perhaps the cheeses used were more oily? Anyway, it's nothing I'm used to - and I've eaten at some of the finest Italian restaurants in North America and in Italy. I'm not denying love went into the recipes, but it was poorly executed.

One dish was a seafood white sauce canneloni I believe. This did NOT disappoint the guest who ordered it, and he did take it home with him. I tried a bit and found it was acceptable in that the seafood was fresh, but the sauce didn't do it any favours... neither did the doughey, sticky pasta which was overcooked and starchy.

We were startled by the bill, which is why I gave the "Value" a "1 - Poor". There was no value here. It was a packed restaurant... maybe the lasagna just isn't the dish to get? Anyways, I've had much better for far less. The salad was wonderful but became one of the only positive things I can reflect on during our visit to Rosa's. Rosa's came highly recommended by a sales associate at a store nearby. If their bread was fresh and hot, as it should be from an Italian restaurant, I'd go back and have their salad if they're open for lunch I guess... but I'd need to check to see if I'd be able to afford it from this spot!

I Wanted Other Reviews to be True!
Submitted Thursday, April 4, 2013 - 1:37am [Dine in]

Oh how I wanted these other reviews to be true, so I took a party of 4 with me to the Taqueria Jalisco in Surrey based on the good reviews on this site and others. Unfortunately, all of us had a horrible dining experience. A couple of loud, inebriated gents were eating away at their nachos slugging back beer, which I guess are the regular patrons Mexican restaurants rely on to survive in the lower mainland? This place is definitely more of a sports bar type place than a restaurant, and actually there are many pubs and bars that serve better nachos and Mexican or Tex-Mex type stuff.

I wanted to report that the people were friendly or attentive but they didn't care that I only took 2 bites. There wasn't even a "do you want this to take home?" or anything. They seemed interested in getting people in and out of there. Moreover, the prices are outrageous. There is no chance we caught this place on an "off" day. Our table was dirty, the restaurant was tacky and cheaply decorated and nobody cared. Shame.

Three, Disappointed
Submitted Thursday, April 4, 2013 - 1:27am [Dine in]

Three, disappointed - that would best describe us after our experience at Taqueria Playa Tropical. It was a really nice sunny day and we arrived, hungry and thirsty, and were sat at our table with a smile. Things looked good. Because it was around Easter they had some pastel coloured chips - nice touch, but the chips were stale - all 10 of them... with no real salsa anywhere near. Ah well.. I had a slight sinking feeling, knowing that so many Mexican restaurants across Canada and especially the lower mainland are really poorly executed. But I can drive 2 hours to Seattle and get amazing Mexican food, authentic and priced for value!

Anyhow, back to the Taqueria Playa Tropical - the burrito I ordered had a TOUGH (stale) flower tortilla that was hard to cut. Inside was a luke-warm mix of steak (carne asada) with miniscule bits of cheese, if any cheese, but a TON of onions. The steak was so chewy and full of sinew and gristle that I had to spit half of it out. This is supposed to be a nice steak burrito! Oh, for $2.50 you can add rice and beans to the burritos. We did the side of beans, which came as a sloppy mess - cold and decorated with a sour cream design?! Yuck. This was all wrong. One at our table sent her beef tacos back because the beef was salted to the point it was like beef jerky. Over seasoned, and we insisted it was taken off the bill. I really wanted to like this place and find a good Mexican restaurant. but this wasn't it.

The atmosphere is extremely casual... maybe they should learn to do a great plate of nachos, push the booze and not try to pretend to do signature dishes from Mexican cuisine. This was terrible, but our server did a good job remaining friendly in spite of the low quality food. It was a great sunny day and nice to get out of there and go home to my bottle of antacid!
