Santouka Ramen1690 Robson Street, Vancouver
New favourite
Submitted Friday, May 28, 2010 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

After being disappointed for the last time at Benkei, I vowed to look for a new ramen place. My search took me to Santouka. My boyfriend and I were happy that we tried it. The broth was rich and tasty, the noodles were good, the sides were great, the variety of things on the menu made me want to come back for more. I'm lucky I didn't have to wait long, we chose to go after peak hours and were seated promptly. We will definitely come back.

Incredible shrinking portions
Submitted Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 5:41pm [Dine in]

I've been going to Benkei on Robson for the last year. Initially I was impressed with how everything tasted. I don't have a big appetite so I always have to order a smaller portion. Lately, I'm not quite sure what has changed in the kitchen but over the past 2 months the taste has become really bland. The portions have shrunk so much that it's laughable. The cuts of meat are now terrible, very thin, very fatty, and I would venture to say inedible. I am definitely going to switch to a different ramen place. I've given it enough time to see that this is a recurring theme with this restaurant and they are eager to cut back on costs no matter the effect in their quality of product.

Inedible and overpriced
Submitted Friday, December 14, 2007 - 7:58pm [Dine in]

I went to Monk's for a birthday party. There were roughly 20 of us. At first they wanted us to order from a fixed menu but they relented and let us order from the regular menu. Several of us ordered the same things as the menu had a small selection of foods that sounded appealing. The main dishes ordered by our party were their halibut and the rice seafood paela. I don't think anyone finished their food. Everyone complained about the food tasting bland, even the other people who didn't order these two dishes. In short, if you want a great dining experience, don't go to Monk's, it was overpriced and the food was gross.

Oh la la

I went with my boyfriend, my mom and my 2 year old niece on a Friday and we were surprised with the best Halibut experience we've ever had. My niece even protested when the waiter tried to take away her dinner plate after she finished it. Kids don't lie. I will definitely go back many times.
