Uncle Fatih's Pizza1685 Broadway East, Vancouver
Delicious pizza, terrible customer service
Submitted Friday, January 22, 2010 - 8:01pm [Dine in]

I love Uncle Fatihs Pizza. It is delicious, and has a wide assortment of tasty toppings. Unfortunately the 'restaurant' is generally hot and stuffy, and leaves little room for customers to eat (which is bad when it's raining). The customer service has been in my experience quite terrible. They have mixed up my orders several times and have outrightly refused to correct the orders. I have spoken to them about this but to no avail. As it stands, I would recommend Uncle Fatihs if you plan on swinging by their place, but if you get it delivered or drive a fair distance to pick up (as we do, driving all the way from Burnaby) then absolutely make sure they have your order right, or you're out of luck.

Delightful

Upon first moving to Vancouver we searched high and low specifically for a restaurant that rivaled the Vietnamese subs we enjoyed often at Banh Mi Thi Thi in Calgary. We believe we have found our favorite place in Vancouver for subs and in addition their menu boasts clean, fresh and delicious tasting soups, rice dishes and other tasty Vietnamese treats. The service for us has been nothing short of fantastic since day one and they enjoy us bringing in our newborn to show her off. There are times where we must wait for 10-15 minutes but we are frequent customers and know the wait is worth it. The ambiance is no better than other places but it's often busy and it does have a younger vibe to it. We highly recommend it as it's been a favorite .... located at the strip mall 33rd and Main.

Um, not great
Submitted Saturday, September 5, 2009 - 8:54pm [Dine in]

My wife and I decided to go here on our first date since the birth of our little girl. The restaurant was mostly empty -- on a Friday night but we decided to give it a try anyways. The waitress was nice enough, but didn't know much about the pastas or wine. We both ordered the lasagna, and we didn't finish either of them. They weren't terrible, but they were very bland. The amount of cheese on them was over the top. They should substitute some flavor and sacrifice the amount of cheese- it would likely make this entree much better. Overall the service was pleasant, the ambiance was nothing great, and the food was unappealing. We have decided not to go back since there are many other Italian restaurants on Hastings and in North Burnaby that we can try.

Hot Plate Bistro, The1205 Madison Ave., Burnaby
Solid, cozy weekend joint
Submitted Saturday, September 5, 2009 - 6:56pm [Dine in]

We recently moved to North Burnaby, and just one block from The Hot Plate Bistro. We were very happy to see the all day breakfast sign as we love going out for breakfast on the weekends. The all day breakfast is pretty standard- eggs, bacon, toast and potatos; for about $4.50 thats what you can expect. We found the food to be pretty solid, nothing fancy, but then again we love simplicity. The service is great, the owners are warm, friendly, and talkative. There is a great local feeling to it since its tucked away in a residential area. We have yet to try anything but breakfast but may do so in the future. Our only complaints, and they would be minor, is that the coffee is pretty standard (Van Houtens- they serve it at Chevron gas stations), and the portions were a little small. Needless to say though, we love the proximity and the service and we will be back again and again.

Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant4530 Hastings St, Burnaby
A gem of find in North Burnaby
Submitted Saturday, September 5, 2009 - 6:45pm [Dine in]

One night my brother-in-law and his wife were visiting from Victoria and as it was getting late we quickly decided to try and find an Ethiopian restaurant close by. We scoured the internet and came up with a few options, but since Lalibela was mere blocks from our place we decided to give it a try. It was the right decision. We were very impressed with the owners knowledge of the food, of Ethiopia and its customs. The service was fantastic, the food was absolutely delicious. The wife of the owner even came out of the kitchen and held our 4 month old while we enjoyed our delicious platter. The cost came to about $11 each. My brother-in-law is a world traveller and has spent extensive time in Africa, and he was very pleased with the authenticity of the food and the delicious flavors. There was no food left at the end. Perfect.

We will absolutely be back, and in fact can't wait until that craving for Ethiopian hits us again!
