Don't go for the ambience
Submitted Thursday, July 9, 2009 - 4:43pm [Dine in]

We went after a movie on Friday night. Made a reserve for 10 pm for dinner. By 1030 we still didn't have a table, but at least had a seat at the bar. Finally seated, and at 1045 the music got cranked up way loud. We couldn't talk across the table. I asked a passing busperson if they could turn the volume down a bit - he said he would check. Came back a minute later and said it was all computer controlled. Nothing they could do. Finally the food came, it was even louder now. Asked the waiter the same question - his reply - "The Manager likes it this way" and left. No tip that night. We won't be back.

We live in the neighbourhood and thought we'd give this place a try after not having been here for a couple of years. The waitress (probably the owner lady) was indeed cold as ice and didn't seem to care if she had customers. Other patrons were having a good time and seemed to enjoy the atmosphere, which is cozy. The food was lemonized! Everything from the caesar salad, the potatoes, and the huumos had waay too much lemon. Maybe they are trying to preserve everything longer? The wine was too expensive for this calibre of restaurant. A $10.50 bottle at LCB was priced at $34. Considering the prices, chintzy paper napkins should have been cloth. All in all, a mediocre dinner, and too expensive. There are many better restaurants in North Van.

a nice experience

Have been to Gigi's on Davie a number of times, and it is a nice change from the Moxie's, Earls, etc franchises. The music is low, so you can actually talk!, the lights are bright enough that you don't need a flashlight to see the menu. The food is good and they will even customize your dishes to your specific desires. Definitely recommend it as a comfort food restaurant

Our regular restaurant

There are very few quiet, comfortable restaurants on the North Shore that one can go to. After a busy day at work and not wanting to cook, Gambrinus is our resturant of choice. It is always QUIET, which is a must, when you want to have a nice converstion, and the food is always good. The winelist has recently been upgraded and is appreciated. We tried several of the new trendy places such as Deuce, and they are waayy too noisy for even us 40-somethings. Gambrinus is just good food, great martinis, friendly staff, and local.

after not having been here for months, the waiter Bill remembered what we ordered last time and what table we sat at. We were very impressed and will be going back again soon with a bunch of friends. We highly recommend this restaurant.
