Ichiro Japanese Restaurant12011 2nd Avenue, #110, Richmond
One of my favourite Japanese restaurants
Submitted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 1:34am [Dine in]

This place is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants. The food is consistently good. The menu has a lot of items (good and bad), each with their individual picture, so you know exactly what you are ordering (and yes, the picture actually looks like the finished product). Stay away from their fresh oysters, however. They are not fresh and improperly cleaned. It's always unpleasant chomping down on a small bit of unseen shell or sand. The service is mediocre. Food arrives in an acceptable amount of time and the waitresses do their best to serve everyone. Some waitresses have some difficulties with English, so you will have to deal with that if you come across it. They always seem to want to up-sell or recommend alternatives to what you want to order (i.e. daily specials). While they are good, the specials are usually more expensive, more exotic items, so watch out.

Good food regardless of authenticity
Submitted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 1:28am [Dine in]

This place has good tasting food regardless of whether or not it is authentic Thai. The green chicken curry had a good amount of spice/kick to it. It was creamy and a generous amount of peppers and chicken was included. The set dinner is a good value with salad, a spring roll, a chicken skewer, green curry, and coconut rice (if I recall correctly). The decor is bland but the place is clean and presentable. Would recommend and go again.

Friendly service. Good, consistent mall food.

Seems to me like this is a family run business. They do a good job of running it. They provide good, friendly service (although sometimes they seem a little pushy/desperate to up-sell drinks, etc. with your purchase). The other staff sometimes don't seem to carry the same enthusiasm as the owners. The food is consistent with good taste and value. Service is quick from ordering to receiving your food. Great choice for mall food in Richmond Centre.

Disappointing food. Strange decor.
Submitted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 1:13am [Dine in]

Went here for a company Christmas lunch, so this may not be exactly a representation of Nu's normal operations. I ordered a steak. The waitress nor the cook could tell me exactly what the cut of meat was. Assuming it was a quality piece of beef, I ordered my usual blue-rare doneness. The steak arrived medium-rare and was EXTREMELY tough and chewy to the point where my jaw was fatigued from chewing just after a few pieces. No steak knives were provided and when asked the waitress replied that they did not have any! I was left to cut my steak with a butter knife. The complementary bread was slathered in rock salt. It was disgustingly salty, inedible. No whipped butter was provided either, so it was impossible to spread the hard butter on the bread. The decor is strange. Questionable fabric upholstery on the seats which were stained from previous spills. The view is great however, so points for that. I'd walk upstairs and dine at Stonegrill instead.

One of the better all-you-can-eat Japanese places
Submitted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 1:06am [Dine in]

This is probably one of the better all-you-can-eat Japanese places around here, but that isn't saying much in terms of service and food quality. The food is mediocre, but nothing to rave about. I like how all-you-can-drink pop is included with your meal as well -- nice feature. The selection of menu items is good as well. Food doesn't take too long to arrive either, but expect less quantity than what you had written down (just means you must order more).

Guu Garden888 Nelson St., M101, Vancouver
Not the best Guu around here
Submitted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 1:02am [Dine in]

Initially, the ambiance seemed great (although you wouldn't even know it existed from the street). The garden is pleasing and the interior decor is better than other Guus. The food was a bit of a disappointment compared to other Guus in terms of flavour, selection/variety, and value. I dined with a group of 5 so there were plenty of dishes ordered -- none of which really stood out for me. I'd still recommend the Guu on Thurlow over this one.

Poor service, value, and food! NOT RECOMMENDED.
Submitted Tuesday, June 22, 2010 - 12:58am [Dine in]

Ordered: Large chicken hawaiian donair. The large donair is the same size as a regular size at most places. It is also about $2 more expensive than most. The chicken was old, dry and hard around the edges. The rotisserie for the chicken had broken and stopped spinning. The counter is set up so that you cannot view the process of making the donair and you cannot see what kind of ingredients are available (or their freshness). After putting the donair together, the guy put it in the MICROWAVE to heat it up. The service was horrible. The guy was not friendly at all. In fact, he asked "so what's going on?" when I was taking my time deciding as if I was keeping him from doing more important things (after I made my purchase, he went to sit on a chair outside). Furnishings were old. The inside of the shop was hot. There are some dirty, kiddish plastic tables to sit on outside. Probably the WORST donair place I've been to. Would never recommend to anyone.
