I knew going in that this would be on the pricier side, so I was well groomed with what to expect, and really, anyone who goes here should know that going in. Thankfully the price is reflected in the quality of the product you are getting. The macarons are very good, got a dozen in order to try all the flavours and the best of the bunch are easily the line and pink praline. I would go back, but it is definitely a (very) once in a while treat type of place.
They have the small space done up quite nicely, you pick up your order and bring it to the table. Absolutely delicious tender pork together with carmelized onions, cilantro, romaine lettuce and pickled jalepenos. It really was a tasty sandwich. Depending on your taste the jalepenos may be too much. I felt a little heat, but it was of the pleasing variety.
Happened here during their happy hour which takes a few dollars off of some of the dishes that are already very reasonably priced. The menu is nice and concentrated, and it shows in the execution of the food. The chicken kabab is very nice. The lamb shank with dill rice is a definite star. Nice tender lamb that easily glides apart as your fork presses down on it. Service is efficient without being pushy. All in all a good place to stop in for a meal when on the north shore.
Similar to other reviews I was really looking forward to Dunn's when it was announced that they would be opening a restaurant here. It looks nice inside, but just didn't seem to have any real atmosphere, seemed there was way too much staff for the amount of customers.
The food itself was a huge disappointment. I'm used to ordering the smoked meat medium and it being nice, tender and juicy. Instead I'm left with a rather dry sandwich. Don't bother trying to squirt mustard on it at the table, the "stay clean" heinze bottle (who uses Heinz mustard anyway?) will output way too much. It really is a shame that they don't have a more classic squeeze bottle.
Fear not though, one doesn't have to go as far east as Montreal for a good smoked meat sandwich. Instead just as far as Estrella's in Langley. :)
The place is always busy, but have never had to wait very long for a table. The food is good value for what you pay, and is decent as well. At lunch time it is very common to hear "lucky choice" a selection of 3 items plus miso soup for around $8. Kitchen is efficient as well, be it with sushi or cooked items, they always come in a reasonable time to be in and out in a short work week lunch time.
The sign on the outside says "Best Donuts On Vancouver Island". I definitely would agree. Perfect cake donuts with such toppings as maple walnut, lemon coconut, and choccolate peanut butter cups. Absolute perfection, with a delicious medely of flavours. Served for take-out in a wax paper lined pizza box so that you don't have the problem of toppings rubbing off on other donuts this is one stop that I try to make each and every time I am on the island.
This is the nice small spot on the strip that is well worth the visit. The staff are very attentive without being overbearing. Each visit we have had we've found this to be the case, and the kitchen doesn't have you waiting very long between ordering, or between courses. When the food comes it is spot on. My personal favourite is the crab wonton appetizer, and I haven't had a bad entree yet. It is definitely a place to come for a special evening.
This is exactly the kind of place you think of when you think of an old fashioned diner. Parking lot full, Every table taken, save one just being cleared, perfect timing. Nice small menu of breakfast, sandwiches, burgers. Prompt, friendly service, and delicious soup, bbq bacon cheeseburger, chicken burger, onion rings, and shoestring fries. All around very nice. If the portions weren't so big we would have had room for pie afterwards. Next time.
Approximately two weeks ago I took a stroll through New West. The Quay (River Market) had a sign that said Hungry Curious, come in. I left hungry and curious where I could get something to eat (that wasn't the Paddle Wheel Pub). Fast forward two weeks and the Crab Shop has opened up.
While it is mainly a fish shop, they do offer a small menu of take out and have a handful of seats. The prices are very good, and the actual fish (I got cod & chips) is very good. Nice thick pieces of perfectly fried fish in a seasoned batter. It was very good indeed. Hopefully the start of more things to come in New West's waterfront.
Went to this place today after seeing it on the local food blogs, and the can't nearly do it justice. Very friendly, welcoming service from the owners, and truly amazing sandwiches. Almost everything less the sandwich bread is made in house. Truly succulent pulled pork sandwich, with a nice little kick to it, and great tasting cole slaw. The lemon bar for dessert is spectacular, come early for this, I can see it disappearing fast. Great value for all around great food.
Have been a few times, once during the week and it was packed, was lucky to find a table. Once on the weekend and it was slow. I would think that more people might find there way out here for these sandwiches. I appreciate the choice between lean and marbled with the smoked meat sandwiches, go marbled every time. Such a beutiful texture and taste as the teeth just glide through the meat. The light rye bread perfect accents it. My only complaint is that it is so far away, but it is worth the visit every time.
Wow, so many good reviews here. Makes me wonder if people have tried anywhere else. I'll give this restaurant its props, very friendly, quick service, and neat, if somewhat cluttered decor. But the food? No thanks, there's better to be had. Soggy limp chips swimming in oil. I would say that the oil wasn't nearly hot enough when the fries were put in. The oil could also have been drained from the fish. Taking the batter off the fish and there is absolutely no seasoning at all, very bland. Guess this is why people require so much tartar sauce, lemon, vinegar and salt. Next time I'm on the strip I'll try someplace else thanks.
Well it seems there is a common thread going with people that visit this place. I ended up here after visiting the bird sanctuary, tail end of lunch rush on the weekend. Service was okay, but didn't receive napkins with the chowder we started with. The soup itself was good. Entrees were decent as well, really enjoyed the panko breading on the halibut. Enjoyed the decor, really old school nautical bar feel. If in the area I'd stop in again, but wouldn't go out of my way to come.
I'm kicking myself for not having enough time to sit and eat it there, but what an experience this place it. Come open minded and able to laugh at yourself and you are guaranteed a good time. Even better is the sandwich. I let the owner make me whatever he wanted to slip in between my buns and boy was I satisfied. Four different types of meats, two different cheese, lettuce, tomato all adds up to about a 3 lbs sandwich for $8. I don't know anywhere else to get that kind of value with that kind of flavour, and to come out with a smile on the face from laughing so hard. It is all good. Next time I'm staying, and if I'm lucky the owner will honour his promise of letting me be the first to see him after he's been waxed!
Had been walking in the neighbourhood while on a break from work and saw this little place tucked into a stip mall. Went to try it for lunch. Very polite server (presumably owner) behind the counter took my order for a cabbage roll and half dozen perogies, was offered a choice of what kind of perogie ... very nice. Cabbage roll was big and stuffed with a very nice mixture of beef and rice, great tomato sauce with peppers on top. Potato and Cheddar perogies definietly looked hand-made, with a nice conistent filling. Made for a great quick lunch under $10
If you are driving out in the valley, it is well worth it to stop into this gem. We are talking solid diner food and absolutely incredible slices of many different flavours of home made pie. Went for lunch on, and waiting in a moderate line up while tables were turned, had a very good sized lunch, and could not leave without trying some of their pies. There is a large selection of different baked treats to choose from, and if you order ahead even whole pies to take home. Incredible value, and worth the drive our of greater Vancouver.
Better service here than in some Vietnamese restaurants, especially if they recognize you as a repeat customer. Definitely one of the, if not the, best broth, absolutely packed with flavour. I always find that they give a lot of meat or tendon (or whatever you order in your pho). Spring rolls here are some of the best around as well. The rice/meat/chicken dishes are very good as well. Solid all around.
I'm sure many people have watched Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Well, this is one place that, to my knowledge, hasn't been on there ... yet. It offers just down home diner cooking done very well each time, and being big supporters of Whalley Little League for many years has a mainly baseball themed decor. My favourite thing on the menu is the perogie breakfast, the best part being the choice of having them just boiled, or getting them pan fried to crisp them up. Absolutely delicious cheddar cheese filled perogies go very, very well with poached eggs and bacon. Service is very warm and friends. Just a really good place to come for a meal.
The name of the chain says it all. They do burgers and fries, and they do it very well. Tasty all beef patty loaded with toppings including grilled onions and mushrooms (that one doesn't have to pay extra for). Fries that are cooked to order, and thus are hot and crispy, having been cooked in peanut oil. A few salted, roasted in shell peanuts to whet the appetite while waiting was nice as well. Staff were courteous, and the cleanliness of the place was very apparent. A good new entry into the fast food market.
Went to the new Surrey location of Memphis Blues a few weeks after it opened, and it was absolutely hopping. Having been to other locations I already knew what to expect, but for someone who might be here for the first time it was extremely helpful of the staff working to let people know that they can take a seat, then come up and order, and the food will be taken to their table. I have to give them kudos here as that isn't always done at the other locations.
The food itself was very good, I am a pulled pork and beef brisket guy and I wasn't disappointed. My only gripe would be that I wished they would give a little more of each when you get the combo. These are the two items that are always a must have here. I also love the choice of different bottled sodas, washing this down with a Boylan Lemon Soda was the cherry on top.
