This now my all time favorite sushi restaurant that serves really creative rolls . Prices are the lowest in Lower Mainland for this yummy creative rolls. It would surprise me if I found a place that makes sushi better than this place. I've attached pics ....because a picture is worth a thousand words. The rolls I ate ranged from $4.25 to $5.50. Soooo good. Doesn't put a hole in my wallet. Also this place has daily specials on some rolls. Ex. 20 piece rolls for 6.75, etc. Worth checking out. Party trays also available ...and when you buy 2nd tray,.... it's 1/2 price. Yes!
With a coupon in hand for a FREE Pastry with purhase of Siphon Coffee, I was excited to see what the "newest" brewing technique in the coffee industry was about. (Note: Brewing coffee by siphon method, also known as vaccum coffee making, has been around since 1830, invented by Berlin's Loeff.)
Upon watching the brewing method, it's quite a novelty to see what's looks to be a chemistry experiment with its 2 glass bottles, water, ground coffee and "flame". Time to make coffee from time of payment was around 7 minutes. Cost is $8.00 for the coffee.
Moment of truth about the taste: Mediocre. Tasted a little watered down for me. Not "robust" enough for me. Espresso making using stovetop supercede coffee made by siphon method. However the entertainment value of watching the coffee-making process by siphon process, was worth the use of the coupon, which included any free pastry!
Finally, had my 1st cupcake at Cupcakes.
After a much anticipated wait of 2 years....finally got the chance to try the vanilla cupcake with pink buttercream.
Cake was moist. This surprised me considering that past reviews rated cake as dry. Cake resembled texture of a sponge cake with strong flavor of a chinese like egg sponge cake (which is yummy).
Buttercream was not too sweet, and it was beaten well to light airy texture. Only complaint: could not taste any vanilla. In fact, the taste resembled the taste of a white cake from Safeway. But luckily, I like Safeway's white cake . Vanilla flavour was missing....
Okay...for the past 3 years, I've been in search of the best cupcakes in the Lower Mainland. Having tried various cupcakes at Cupcakes, Big City Cupcakes, Pink Sugar Cupcakery, Oh La La, and even Starbucks, none really impressed me. Even the cupcakes were too dry, or too sweet.
I believe my search now ends at Bell's Bake Shop in Steveston Village. Retro , old fashion feel as I entered the bake shop. Candy- colored cupcakes of all sorts ~ Vanilla (with pink buttercream frosting), Confetti Vanilla (with white buttercream frosting) , Chocolate, Red Velvet, Carrot, Banana, to the seasonal Mincemeat cupcake ~~ for my choosing.
Oh my... the vanilla cupcake...fantastique! and quite the surprise!! Visions of old fashioned bake shops baking old fashion, home style cupcakes in my head. Comfort food!!! at its best!
The cupcake is made of a deliciously moist cake (with a taste of vanilla explosion), and lovely whipped pink buttercream frosting (with the right amount of sweetness, with yummy taste of vanilla )
My general rule: If a vanilla cupcake is baked with perfection, all others should be just as yummy. This was true for the following cupcakes I ate within the same day: Confetti Vanilla Cupcake, Red Velvet Cupcake, and Mincemeat Cupcake ~~~~ all of which did not disappoint.
(Damn! There goes my waistline, for which my willpower can not resist those little goodies)
At 2.75 each...the price may appear steep, but after much much contemplation....2.75 for the best cupcake in the Lower Mainland (when I can not bake a decent cupcake myself) is reasonable. However, if you fall in love with Ms. Bell's little goodies, I recommend buying the 6 cupcakes for 15.00 (which works out to 2.50 each). Most likely, buying 12 cupcakes will give a better deal! Will need to check that out when I restock my cupcake stash!
I was invited to the 1st Night Opening . The food was pretty good tastewise.
Had the hamburger with a questionable sandwich bread for "hamburger bun". Pretty odd choice.
Nice turnout, and most patrons looked pleased.
It was no Memphis Blues (in Vancouver), but for Steveston, it was good.
As a kid, I remember going for dim sum with my family every Saturday. The dim sum was nothing fancy or extraordinary that one might see at higher end restaurant. They are just plain simple dim sum, that I consider comfort food (chinese style). Finally, I found a place that fits the bill.
Po King offers simple, old style dimsum. All the dishes tastes great. And at 2.95 per dish, even better.
Mediocre; and not worth the wait.
Ordered the champion beef flank noodle soup: OK. Beef soup reminded me of Campbell's beef consome soup, but with less salt. The beef was okay. Liked the noodles, though...chewy.. (Cost: 11.00).
Also ordered noodles in spicy soup. Lots of noodles in spicy soup. Soup, though, wasn't spicy. (Cost 6.00).
Overall the food was okay.
I wanted to see whether it was worth paying 4 bucks for a cupcake.
I agree with the reviewer below, "4 bucks for a ordinary cupcake ~ that I could get at a "Mom and Pop"/old-style bakery ~~~ was too much" I should have got a Starbucks frappucino with my $4 instead. Errr. I feel as though I was ripped off.
My experience at So.Cial was so bad, I don't want to waste any more time than I have to to write my review.
Tapas for 5.00 ~ embarassingly too small; need glasses to see them.
Prime Rib dinner~ asked for well done; came out rare. Server didn't bother to take it back to have chef re do. Just turned his back on me, and never came back~
Service~ Worse service I've experienced. Made me think, server had some prejudice to me. Server never bothered to serve me~ I had to ask manager for bill. However, he served tables beside me and snuffed me for some odd reason/ even when I tried to get some water.
Don't waste your money. Period.
How can I have overlooked this neighbour cafe in Steveston.
After reading a Vancouver review of this place, and citing excellent reviews, I decide to have breakfast here.
I ordered their famous "Fisherman's breakfast" and what a deal it was at 5 bucks. With 3 eggs, 2 sausages, 2 bacon strips, pancakes/toast, pan fried potatoes and a coffee I was beyond stuffed. The best part, the owner Penny is a darling! And the conversation was more than interesting. Loved watching the action and the fishing boats that surrounded us!
It's an unpretentious "hole in the wall" , but a wonderful one at that!
This place is by far the best sushi place in Steveston and Richmond for that matter. I've been here several times because it's in my neighbourhood, and I've never been disappointed. The fish is as fresh as it comes. The owners, a husband and wife team, are always so gracious for the business. The quality, freshness, value exceeds all the Japanese restaurants ( Yokahamo, Ichiro, and Le Nakamura, and Sushi Ten) in Steveston. I wish this restaurant continued success!!!
I took my Mom here as a treat, and what a treat it was. With the amazing view, bread and lobster oil/with balsamic vinegar and 2 salmon wellington, done perfectly, and served with pinor noir sauce ~ c'est tres magnifique!!! At 30.00 a dish, it's well worth the meal. Sockeye salmon was big, and we both took the rest home. Regular visits are required!!!
Undoubtedly the best dutch-style bakery in Lower Mainland.
I ordered their white cake with mocha buttercream, and this cake is definitely what a cake should be like. It's what a birthday cake should tastes like. It reminds me of my childhood in the 70s, with those all so yummy birthday cakes. To die for.
Price for cake that feeds 8-10 is 12.50 ~ can't beat it. I will definitely be a regular customer.
Since I live in Steveston, and a big supporter of small businesses, I wanted to give this place a second chance. My first time here was disappointing, however, my 2nd time visiting this restaurant was as disappointing. I was so hoping for some improvement in food portions and prices. The portions itself are small, with outrageous prices. Granted, I understand Gudrun to be a "tasting" restaurant, similar to "Salt" in downtown Vancouver, however, the establishment still misses to the mark in terms of appropriate pricing/portions. The service however is outstanding!
It would surprise me if this place manages to stay afloat another 2 years. It's unlikely that the majority of Steveston residents need a "tasting" establishment.
Simply put, had the owner completed a market analysis of consumer demographics in Steveston, he would have determined that a need for a tasting restaurant would be best suited somewhere else. Let's face it, the majority of "tasting" rooms' clients cater to young/middle-aged professionals without children, who have discretionary income to spend on "luxury" items, and The Gudrun Tasting Room is one such item.
Entire restaurant concept and mission statement needs a major revamp to survive!
This place, by far, is the worse AYCE sushi place I've ever gone to. Service is slow, portions are tiny. If you order the salmon maki roll, it is hard to see the fish in the roll. Terrible. For 8.95 seniors or 10.00 for adults, you think you're getting a deal, but in reality, it's still a rip off. Ordering anything with raw fish, takes forever for the order to come out.
Agh. Like my little niece said, the jello tastes better than all the items on the menu. That says a lot about their food.
However, I will say, with service slow, they were quick to take our money. This was remarkable. Service slow, but taking our money was fast.
This bakery is hidden in Steveston. It undoubtedly offers the best French pastries. The macaroons are to die for. And the other pastries look like small pieces of art. They are simply to pretty to eat.
I can't believe the prices they charge. It's a steal when you factor in creativity, and the time it spends to create one pastry.
The service here, too, is exceptional. It's a small establishment, which definitely makes service personalized. Either the pastry chef or his assistant will take the time to talk to you about each item. I'll be going here every weekend.
The deep fried calamari at this place is heaven. Salted just right, tender (not rubbery) and "light". Simply heaven from the 1st bite.
I agree with the previous ratings, the cook could have held back on the onions, or used a less pungent onion, such as a sweet onion. But the dish, with the greek rice, potato and salad was definitely well-worth the calories.
The roasted lamb dinner was just as good. It's one of their signature dishes, with more than 25% of the patrons ordering this dish. The lamb was tender enough that one did not necessarily have to use a knife. Great thing about the lamb: more meat, than bone.
Service was less attentive than usual, but I was more focused on my food than the service. For me: It's "just bring out the dishes, top up my water, leave me be, and I'm a happy camper!"
The burritos they make here are huge. I was surprised, being that it was my first time. A plus is TDM offers a large selection of ingredients to put in the burrito. The service was exceptional. Very efficient. Only downside: The cheese tasted like the processed slice kind. But for the price, 4.99, I'll definitely be back.
This place is brand new. I took a chance and ordered their gelato, which they make themselves. I was impressed and bought a litre of it home with me. I'll be back to try something from their lunch menu. Scanning through the menu, I thought the prices were reasonable, from 3.00 to 10.00. The items on the menu looked interesting, mixing different asian cuisines together.
Whenever I can't think about a restaurant to go to for lunch, it's Richmond Sushi. Never fails.
I've always been happy with their selection during lunch. Mind you, it's definitely nothing fancy, but for 10 bucks a person, what can I expect. However, freshness is key when serving raw fish, and they don't disappoint. The fish, for the times, I've been there is always fresh! Yea!
My only disapptmt. is the service. It looks like most of the staff aren't happy serving people, or it could be they're overworked. Anyways, the service I've never been impressed with. But as I said before, for 10 bucks a pop, I kind of expected this. On the bright side, I don't tip. hee hee.
