Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant4989 Victoria Dr., Vancouver
good value for the money
Submitted Thursday, April 30, 2009 - 9:41am [Dine in]

I've been here several times for dim sum and evening dinners. The food is very good and reasonably priced for what you get. If you have a group of about 10, you can order from the banquet-style menu (I believe it's only written in Chinese though). These 10-course meals include appetizers, several entrees, rice/noodles, and dessert - a very good value for the money. Although they can get extremely busy especially on Friday and Saturday evenings (so you'll need to make reservations well in advance especially if you have a large group), they serve quite quickly and the service is fairly decent.

Samurai Sushi on Fraser6428 Fraser Street, Vancouver
excellent value for the money

I've only tried Samurai Sushi at the Fraser and Denman locations. The Denman restaurant is a lot bigger but they're both good. I personally highly recommend the Fraser location because they serve the most generous amount of sushi and sashimi for a very economical price that I've seen in town. The service is pretty good and friendly too.

Victoria Chinese Restaurant1088 Melville St, Vancouver
poor quality and service
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 1:45pm [Dine in]

Too pricey for too mediocre dim sum. Shrimp dumplings (har gow) are usually orange in colour, but the ones they serve are yellowish... Service was poor. Definitely do not recommend. If you still intend to go though, make sure the order receipt that they give you immediately after you've filled out your dim sum slip matches what you have ordered. They gave us the wrong dim sum slip of the day. When the food came, we told them that some of the dishes were not ours. They gave us the "look" for thinking we were at fault but we obviously proved them wrong after we told them to show us the original slip that we filled out.

do not dine here!
Submitted Saturday, January 5, 2008 - 1:18am [Dine in]

I've been to this restaurant twice. The first time was not bad, but I'm definitely not coming back after the second experience. I find both the hostess and the waitress to be extremely haughty. The hostess didn't even greet us with a "hello". She just showed us to our table and took our order quickly as if she had better things to attend to even though the restaurant wasn't even that busy. During the entire time, our waitress only came to serve us our food and truly said absolutely nothing to us. (If I didn't see her chatting w/ her co-workers, I would have thought she's mute!) We were definitely not rude to them because we thanked them a few times for bringing our tea, food, and bill but they never even bothered to say anything courteous back to us. Even when we left, neither of them said "good bye" or "thank you". Considering the food is nothing special, I'm definitely not coming back here ever again, even if it's free!
(FYI, this is the first time I've written a restaurant review. I normally don't bother with this sort of thing because I find that most restaurant services are tolerable no matter how bad it is. However, I found this experience to be terribly unpleasant because my mom and I certainly don't deserve to be treated this way and I only want to inform others who may actually want to try dining here to avoid this place.)
