I spent one of my mexican holidays in a rural part of the south, and one night we stumbled onto a small taco shop where all they were making was tacos al pastor, roasting slowly with pineapple on top, served on small handmade tortillas and garnished with cilantro and onions, and we stuffed ourselves silly. Ever since that trip I've been chasing the tacos al pastor dragon...and I found it today at La Taqueria. Oh joy!
The tacos menu is extensive, local and organic and I'll be back to try the rest of the flavours (there are veggie and carnivorous options both available) note that seating is limited and take out might be a good option when they are busy. On sunny days just head down to the street and hang with the rest of the folk.
And be warned, if you are hungry, order 4!
I stopped in to get take-away a few weeks ago, and they kept trying to microwave my takeout - IN the styrofoam containers!!
I kept having to stop them, it completely freaked me out, using styro is bad enough, but not knowing not to microwave/melt it leaves me wondering what else they're doing.
This place has amazing potential, but the microwave has GOT to go and they need to be conscious of what their customers are saying.
I'll go back to give them a 2nd try in the hopes they make a few changes.
I can't say enough wonderful things about this tiny little gem, my boyfriend and I went last night for our anniversary dinner and ordered alla familia (where the chef sends out multiple plates to share) and let the kitchen decide what to make us. Needless to say we ate fantastic course after fantastic course for about 3 hours and ended with the osso bucco which was unreal and even though we were stuffed to capacity, we managed to squeeze it in. We also had veal scallopini with tuna sauce, an unreal veal ravioli with demi glace, risotto with white asparagus and black sablefish...and others which I can't recall. And, the desserts were mouth watering and so fresh thanks to their terrific pasty chef. Long story short, make a reservation early in the night and plan to stay and eat for a while.
Not only is their evening ambiance warm and romantic (best date spot in kits!) but you can take your date back the next morning (weekends only ;) for breakfast! They keep great hours (I'd rather my restaurants open for meal times than stay open all day) and have some of the best servers around.
Weekend brunch will find a benny special, along with about 5 other great bennys on the menu, a fabulous grilled cheese with apples, canadian bacon and dijon, and the best cinamon bun french toast in the world. And fab coffee to boot!
Dinner - have the paella, so great (I promise you won't have to take it home and 'tweak' it like that other reviewer) and awesome poutine - but my fave is the camembert bruschetta with pesto and balsamic glaze - so yummy!
