Very Good Viet Subs!
Submitted Saturday, October 18, 2008 - 12:29pm [Dine in]

I have visited this little place a number of times and usually order their Subs. Had their Pho once and it was fine but the Subs are what keep me coming back. I always get their special sub.

I always wonder what is in the meat mixture as well as some of the other ingredients in Vietnamese subs but the taste, value and french buns always seem to win out over the curiosity factor.

Though the price of subs here are a buck or two more in some of the other locations around the lowermainland the consistent quality here is worth the extra coin. The restaurant is always clean, owner and service pleasant and decent ambiance add up to a good experience.

Vietnamese Sub value puts this meal on the top 5 list of good bang for the buck for a lunch especially in comparison to the fast junk food options around the GVRD.

Nice Surprise
Submitted Saturday, October 18, 2008 - 11:08am [Dine in]

Was out for a late meal last evening and ended up in Langley and down Fraser Hwy. in the old section "one-way-street" part. Ashoka was one of the last left that was open and we decided to give it a chance seeing that it was very busy when we did the drive-by.

Looked nice when we walked in and the immediate smell gave us our first clue that we made a good choice.

The service was very polite and nice but very inexperienced. Wouldn't take any marks away for that because of how pleasant they were but had to laugh when they brought us a couple of beers in bottles (caps opened but left sitting on top) and asked if we would like glasses. You bet, as we weren't at a BC Lions tailgate party. Few other gaff's that made it obvious this was probably their first serving job and just started that week but again they made up for it for effort.

Ordered two entree's of Mixed Vegetable Korma and a Lamb curry dish. Lamb was incredible. On the menu it described the lamb as succulent and was it ever. Sauce was excellent. The vege Korma was good but I have had better. Rice and Naan bread were both great and we were stuffed and didn't need an appetizer.

Very enjoyable experience and wouldn't hesitate to go back or recommend to others.

Looking forward to exploring a few other restaurants in this little strip that looked really interesting but unfortunately had already closed as it was after 9.

I also saw that crib board by the window and was wondering about it.

Very nice surprise
Submitted Saturday, December 29, 2007 - 4:44pm [Dine in]

Went for a group work dinner to this restaurant. Never heard of it before and certainly wouldn't have noticed it driving by. Had the pork tenderloin in a fig sauce. It was to die for. The meal and desert was excellent. A number of people ordered the linguine and thought it was ok but others who ordered other non linguine also thought the meal was outstanding. Hopefully it survives as it deserves and fills a missing spot in Richmond's diverse cuisine scene. We were the only party in the restaurant which was a bit concerning.

Its about time
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 8:53pm [Dine in]

I noticed that there was a change in ownership after driving through the parking lot and saw the sign had changed and the big giveaway of a new opening of a chinese restaurant were the flowers on the stands in the entrance. Had to give it a shot. The previous "all you could stomach" was disgusting.

What a surprise. I asked the server to recommend something special with a bit of spice and that I was looking to be impressed. He was excited and up for the challenge. He came back with the menu and pointed out the braised chili fish. Not something that would have caught my eye on the menu but decided what the hell.
I ordered it with steamed rice. I had never tasted fish so fresh and soft. No clue what it was but it was white fish and it was excellent. A little on the spicy side but I asked for it. There was enough to feed a family. I took it home and ate it for a couple of days. Not sure if he was trying to impress me with the portion knowing it was my first visit and wanted me to come back or if this was the normal size but it was huge.

I went back a few weeks later with an open mind. Talked to a guy at the table behind me and asked what he had experienced so far. He recommended the dinner for one which was a sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mein and beef chop suey. It turned out that it wasn't a dinner for one but a dinner for two. The plate was huge and I could only finish about half.

I'm very optimistic that we may finally have a decent chinese restaurant for Surrey/Delta. We'll see. One concern I have which I have seen a number of times before is the size of the place. Its huge and they are obviously hoping for large dining parties. I worry because the overhead must be huge and will bite into their operating cost. They will need to fill those seats to make a good run at it. Kind of wish they were in a smaller sized room.

Give it a try!!

Change of hands, big dissapointment
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 7:58pm [Dine in]

Surrey and North Delta have a lot of chinese restaurants but most of them are really sub par when comparing to the other communities.
This used to be one that was descent especially for lunches. They used to have a daily dim sum but since the new owners took over they have cut that out and only have it on weekends. The food quality is, as the other reviewer hit the nail on the head, like poor food court quality.

I laughed about the other comments on the service. Its so true about the dirty looks and cold shoulders when you ask them for a water refill or anything extra. I hate to say it but I hope they go under so maybe another group takes it over.

We need a Hon's in Surrey/Delta. I have emailed them twice begging to check out the market here. I've told them not to get fooled about the number of chinese restaurants and told them the majority are very poor.

Not the best in town
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 7:17pm [Dine in]

This was my second visit. The first wasn't that great but it had just opened so I thought that I would give it a chance after doing some shopping at the asian market next door. I understand that this may be a franchise Pho restaurant. The second visit wasn't much better than the first. There are a number of better Pho houses in Surrey.

Next door in the market you will find some of the best Vietnamese subs in the lower mainland. Special sub for $2.25.

Don't waste your money
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 6:51pm [Dine in]

I noticed the sign in the window indicating that it was rated #1 Japanese or Sushi restaurant in Surrey. Rated by who? I went there not too long ago because one of favorites around the corner was closed and my daughter and I had a strong desire for some sushi.
Should have saved our money as it was very disappointing. I should have known better. If you in the area I would put my money down on Tokyo Ken instead.

Consistant for many years
Submitted Thursday, November 22, 2007 - 6:45pm [Dine in]

The first time we tried this restaurant was when we first moved to the area about 15 years. There weren't too many Japanese restaurants around in Surrey at that time. We were very impressed with the food and the service back then. Kind of forgot about it but went back not too long ago and was very impressed that they had not lost their touch. The food was great and certainly within the top few Japanese restaurants in Surrey.

Canuck Game Special
Submitted Monday, October 22, 2007 - 12:03pm [Dine in]

We went to Big Ridge a couple of Friday's ago to watch the Canucks game and to our surprise there was an "all pints of beer for $3.25 special on Canuck nights". So cheap fresh beer was a great start for the evening. We ordered vietnamese spring rolls, mussels in coconut curry sauce, and sweet potato fries with chipotele dipping sauce all off the appetizer menu. The food, beer and service was outstanding. Can't say enough about the food. The only negative was that there wasn't big screens in the pub. Lots of small but they need a couple of larger size screens

Consistant and good

This is close to where I live and I'm happy that I don't have to go far to have some quality Japanese. There are probably 6 or 7 Japanese restaraunts in the newton area close to Tokyo Ken's and this place has the rest beat. There have been a few differant owners since it opened and staff have always been very friendly. Monday nights half price liquor makes it a good night to go out for $2.50 beer.

Best Pho in Surrey
Submitted Tuesday, August 21, 2007 - 12:21am [Dine in]

This has been a very consistant restaraunt for many many years.
I have eaten here probably 30 to 40 times and I don't think I have tried anything but the beef balls and rare beef pho with their spring rolls. I think they put something in the pho to make it addictive because my kids and myself often have strong cravings and just have to have it.

Years ago we decided to try every pho restaurant we could find in Surrey and there are lots. This one is the best. Lots of meat and the broth is incredible.

You don't come here for the ambience you come for the broth!!

Very Impressed
Submitted Monday, August 20, 2007 - 11:41pm [Dine in]

I read the reviews on this Surrey restaurant a while back and have been waiting for a chance to check it out. With a friend visiting from out of town that also like indian food we had our chance tonight and I'm happy to say we weren't dissapointed at all. Well, except for the screaming 1 year old at the next table.

Things didn't start well with our drinks. Both the beer from the tap and the rum and coke were totally flat. That was fixed with no problem. We started with appies and the "Chaat" as someone else recommended along with a fish pakora. The Chaat was incredible and certainly the hit of the evening. The fish pakora was very good.

For the entree's we ordered Chicken Korma and Lamb Tikka Masaala. As well, some Naan and rice of course.
Everything was great. The service was very good. Staff were very cheerful as well as helpful explaining what was in the dish. Never had Chaat before and we asked what it was before ordering.

For the quality the price I thought was very reasonable.
The interior was very nice as well.

A very good restaraunt that will now be my #1 Indian choice.

Surrey needs more quality restaurants.
