Nice Little Place
Submitted Saturday, February 7, 2009 - 4:13pm [Dine in]

Located in a cute house on a hill in Port Moody. Very authentic interior and the place is run by the owner and his wife. We ordered Pad Thai, Tom Yum Khai soup, Chicken and Cashew and a Shrimp dish. All pretty good, nicely balanced. Portions were ok. Pleasant dinner.

Food was tasty and they were really nice people. Quaint would be the correct description of this place.

Disappointing
Submitted Saturday, February 7, 2009 - 4:00pm [Dine in]

The place is nice and the service was attentive but the food was not so good.

We ordered the Pad Thai and a few other dishes and all I can say is that you could get the same quality of food, and sometimes even better, from a mall food court. The Pad Thai was not good at all.

With all the dining choices in Vancouver we will not return. Nice service, nice ambiance, but unmemorable food.

Banana Leaf1096 Denman Street, Vancouver
Nice
Submitted Friday, February 6, 2009 - 11:58am [Dine in]

Tried the Banana Leaf twice so far - once for lunch and once for dinner. The room is cozy and comfortable but the place is small so tables are quite close to each other so don't go here if you want to have a private conversation.

The we tried the Roti Canai, Chicken Curry and Rendang Beef for lunch and it was pretty good. The flavors were very balanced and it was a good deal for lunch.

For dinner we tried a few new dishes and the Tiger Prawns platter was really great. Everything else was satisfactory.

Would probably not repeat at this location for dinner but will be back for lunch. I think we will try the other location since it is larger and has a more extensive menu.

True Confections866 Denman, Vancouver
Has Gone Downhill
Submitted Friday, February 6, 2009 - 11:44am [Dine in]

I remember going to True Confections almost 15 years ago and it was amazing. However, it has steadily declined in quality, service and value.

Don't get me wrong, the desserts are still good (some better than others) but the whole place seems to have not changed much in the last in over a decade. The service is hit and miss and it's almost like they want you in and out as quickly as possible so they can turn over the table.

At approximately $10 or more for a piece of cake in a competitive food town like Vancouver I just think they haven't progressed much. People don't mind paying a premium price if there is value but that's just not the case here any more.

Might be a good place for tourists to go but there are other options that are more romantic and a better value for money with equally tasty desserts...

Ordinary Appies
Submitted Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 6:41pm [Dine in]

Went to Subeez on day after work for drinks and a few appetizers. We were not hungry enough for mains so we ordered about 4 appetizers:

- Goat Cheese Salad
- Mary's Little Lamb Rack
- Calamari
- Rissoto Fritter (not the actual name)

The Goat cheese salad was nice and the Lamb Rack was ok but the Calamari and Rissoto Fritter things were a bit disappointing.

However, the service was friendly and attentive and it is a funky place with a relaxed vibe.

We think perhaps their main dishes would be better so we will try again as we like the atmosphere and staff.

Not bad
Submitted Monday, December 29, 2008 - 1:47pm [Dine in]

Went to Maurya for a weekend brunch. The room is nicely decorated and very clean.

The buffet was good but not earth shattering for their prices. Good selection of the usual dishes including Butter Chicken and Lamb Curry. Service was attentive and the servers were all nice.

Would go again for lunch.

Acacia Fillo Bar & Cafe1103 Denman Street, Vancouver
An English Bay Gem
Submitted Tuesday, December 9, 2008 - 1:47pm [Dine in]

We ended up at Acacia by accident one rainy night. Wanted to eat something different and had always seen this place when going to Delaney's for a coffee.

We were pleasantly surprised... They specialize in phylo pastry dishes. I tried the lamb and my girlfriend had the chicken pesto. Both were very tasty but I though the Chicken Pesto was very good and would get that next time. The meals were each about $9.99 including a nice mixed green salad and roasted potato/sweet potato side. House wines are priced at $4.00 per glass.

Overall the meal was lovely and they serve Lavazza coffee which was perfect after the meal. A large selection of desserts also looked great.

Noticed they have an amazing breakfast for $7.99 and we will definitely be back to try it.

Simple, tasty food with attentive service in a very European ambiance for hard to believe prices. Great value.

Would highly recommend this place.

Vera's Burger Shack1181 Denman Street, Vancouver
Sometimes good, sometimes not...
Submitted Tuesday, December 9, 2008 - 1:31pm [Dine in]

We have had mixed experiences at Vera's on Denman.

The first time we went there were 3 young girls running the place and they were more concerned about there social lives than the customers. We ordered the daily combo special which was a pretty good deal. The Burger was ok but a little sloppy and would have been better if the cook had taken some pride in her work. Not bad for a total of 10 bucks for the combo though...

The second time we visited there were two guys working there and they seemed more mature and serious. It showed in the quality of the food... The burger was tasty and cooked perfectly.

I think it is Hit and Miss here depending on who is working. Decent but probably not the best burger in town either.

All India Restaurant1188 Davie Street, Vancouver
Great overall value
Submitted Tuesday, December 9, 2008 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

My girlfriend and I were planning to eat at Stephos one night and walked by All India. Though we hadn't planned on a heavy Indian lunch the sight of the buffet from the window got us and we walked in.

The host was very polite and the place is small but cozy and clean. We decided to go for the buffet. As we filled our plates the server had already placed a basket of fresh Naan on our table.

The food was flavorful but light enough that you could enjoy a fair sized portion without feeling too full. Their butter chicken was well made and not too heavy on the cream. They had some Veggie curries and Tandoori chicken with all the standard Indian buffet items. All the food was fresh and you could taste the quality. I suppose they have good turnover in clients so the food does not sit there for long - a good thing when considering a buffet...

The spice and flavor of the food has been adjusted for the North American palate but there is still enough authentic Indian flavor in each of the dishes to make them enjoyable. We appreciated the fact we ate generous portions and were not feeling bloated and overwhelmed right after the meal.

Great service and good quality for a $10.95 lunch buffet. A great choice if you are craving Indian food on Davie St.

Boathouse Restaurant, The2770 Esplanade Ave, Port Moody
A Good Time
Submitted Saturday, November 1, 2008 - 2:45pm [Dine in]

I was hesitant to go to the Boathouse Port Moody after reading all the negative reviews but we were craving Crab one night and the place has such a beautiful location right on the water at Rocky Point. Glad we took a chance.

I had the Alaskan King Crab Feast which was 1.5 lbs of crab with butter and roasted veggies. My girlfriend had the Mixed Crab platter with Alaskan King Crab and Dungeness Crab. Ordered a great bottle of wine and just sat on the covered and heated patio with was romantic but still lively and busy.

The crab was prepared very nicely and I was glad I ordered the full King Crab platter. I avoided the steaks based on the other reviews...

Our server was young but still very professional and knowledgeable. They even moved us to a spot right beside the amazing fireplace over looking the water from where we were initially seated.

When I read the other reviews I think perhaps we lucked out that night but the food, service and location definitely deserve another visit... I'll keep you posted if anything changes next time.

Great Tapas Spot
Submitted Saturday, November 1, 2008 - 2:16pm [Dine in]

We love Bin 942. It's a little larger than the original Bin 941 on Davie and they are not as busy... Almost the same menu and everything we have ever tried has been great. My fav has got to be the Navajo Bread with Sundried Tomato and Goat Cheese Salsa. We also love the Cinnamon Rub Chilli Flank Steak and the Halibut dish.

The service at Bin 942 seems to be a little better than 941 and the desserts are also a must try. Would recommend going later in the evening to avoid the dinner rush...

A fun hip place to share creatively prepared food and great wine...

Nice Thai Place
Submitted Saturday, November 1, 2008 - 2:05pm [Dine in]

We visit Siam Thai when in Victoria. They have great lunch specials and dinner is always well prepared. The Pad Thai is tasty and we also get the Cashew Chicken and Green Curry. The Satay is also a sure thing. All the food was flavored nicely and they can adjust the spice level to your liking.

Nice place for a meal in Downtown Victoria...

This Place Sucks!
Submitted Saturday, November 1, 2008 - 1:47am [Dine in]

We went to Insadong tonight thinking it would be great as we have heard all the "hype" about the place. Boy were we ever wrong!

We got seated and it took about 20 minutes and we finally called the hostess over that seated us to take our order. No big deal we thought - they are busy...

So finally the waiter with the nerd glasses brings us our side dishes but does not speak to us or acknowledge us even when we say thank you. He lights the table top BBQ but set it up wrong so it goes out and we sit there for another 20 minutes with our raw food sitting on a cold grill. We ask the hostess what's up and she sets it up correctly and starts the fire.

While other tables have the waiters checking in we flip our food and are not even asked if we want a drink or ever visited by a server for an hour. Finally I walk over to the hostess and ask her what the problem is with our waiter and how come we are being treated like this.

She is apologetic and sends the arrogant little boy with the glasses over with 2 iced teas and he gives us a half hearted apology. Wow, you mess up our entire night and think it's all good with 2 iced teas? Incredulous!!

Oh, it's not over we get our bill and they over charge us... At this point I am keeping my cool but want to get out so my girlfriend takes care of it while I get the hell out of there.

The food was just not that good and the SERVICE SUCKS especially if you get the waiter with the glasses.

I'm still trying to figure out what the problem was with this dude. We both dress well and are pretty chill and easy going. We eat out at least 4-5 times a week and this has got to be the absolute WORST EXPERIENCE EVER...

Raincity Grill1193 Denman Street, Vancouver
Nice place
Submitted Saturday, October 25, 2008 - 12:17pm [Dine in]

We visited the Rain City Grill one rainy evening. The staff was very friendly and gave us a great table with a view of English Bay even though we did not make reservations.

The Grilled Caesar Salad was very good and they have succeded in making something common unique. You can defintely taste the grill flavor in the Romaine.

I had the Local Wild Salmon with a tomato glaze and my girlfriend tried the Sablefish crispy skin. Both meals were prepered with very subtle flavors to emphasize the local, fresh ingredients. I liked the vegetable ragout with my Salmon but the Eggplant was a little boring but overall pretty good dish. The Sablefish was served on a bed of potatoes with a White wine reduction sauce with out of the shell mussels - my girlfriend enjoyed it. Overall the food was nice but Vancouver has many great restaurants so it was not phenomenal or unique.

The Chocolate Tower desert filled with caramel accompanied by smoked milk covered vanilla ice cream was absolutely incredible.

The server was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional but not pretentious.

Cost of meal for 2 with 2 glasses of wine, 1 desert and tip was about $160.

Great value for wonderful food and service
Submitted Saturday, October 25, 2008 - 11:59am [Dine in]

We visited Wild Saffron on a business trip to Victoria. The place is inviting and warm. We both tried the Pan seared Halibut and it was very nicely prepared. The flavors were balanced and accentuated the Halibut perfectly. The veg and potatoes worked well with the fish. Presentation was pretty.

Our waiter was very knowledgeable and professional - he achieved the perfect balance of providing attentive service without being intrusive. The prices are very good for the quality of food and service. Overall great dining experience.

Yummy Thai Food
Submitted Wednesday, October 22, 2008 - 10:43pm [Dine in]

Tried this place after work one night. The place is simple and clean as far as decor. They should get better ventilation but it wasn't too bad so we stayed.

Ordered a few dishes and everything was great. Perfect spice and the flavors were really balanced. Really enjoyed the Pad Thai and the Tom Yum Khai soup with prawns. We will definitely be back. Reasonable pricing and nice servers. Check it out...

Busy but that's about it...
Submitted Saturday, October 11, 2008 - 1:00am [Dine in]

WE thought this would be fun place to eat on a busy Friday night. After a gaffe with our seating we ended up at a good table and were ready to put the initial mix up behind us. The hostess was apologetic and made sure our first round of drinks was on the house. Nice gesture...

So we ordered 4 plates - Halibut Tostadas, Chile Con Queso Fondue, Madagascar Steak and the Baked Fanny Bay Oysters. So we get the first 2 dishes right away and both were disappointing... Then while others that arrived after us have all their dishes we had to wait for the Steak and Baked Oysters. The worst part was the food is awful and we could see that other patorns had similar issues at the front door with the searing and many left in disgust.

My girlfriend went to the washroom and it was a poorly cleaned up after someone had an "accident" in one of the stalls to top it all off.

We eat out a lot and are both pretty easy going but, suffice it to say, we will not be back and I would advise others there are much better places in Victoria... Hell, Subway food would beat this

Great Shawarma
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 4:26pm [Dine in]

This little place on Robson is great for Shawarma. Good portion size and comes with Tabouli, Hummous, Rice and pita for about $8. If you are less hungry or on the run you can get the Shawarma as a pita wrap which is convenient for eating outside.

The food is great and the only drawback is the place is small and cramped with only 3-4 seats so you may have to get it to go

Good Thai Food for Lunch
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 4:09pm [Dine in]

Have visited this place a few times when working downtown. Nicely appointed room with traditional Thai surroundings. Recently their has been construction going on next door but usually the access is easy from the street right off Robson.

The food is tasty and a step above fast food Thai and most lunch selections come with Salad and a Veggie Spring Roll all for under $10.

I usually get the Cashew Chicken which is perfectly spiced and loaded with Chicken Breast pieces, peppers, celery and onions stir fried in a spicy sauce.

Worth a visit and the place seems very clean contrary to some of the reviews...

Submitted Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - 7:25pm [Dine in]

I usually go to the Caffe Artigiano in downtown and it is always great.

This location on the other hand is definitely hit and miss so I gave it a low rating. Staff is young and often distracted with each other.

It's just this location that has been up and down so check out the Artigiano's in DT Vancouver for great espresso based drinks...
