Fantastic
Submitted Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - 8:44pm [Dine in]

We've eaten here twice since the start of the New Year and had fantastic meals on both occasions. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable and the value for the money is hard to beat. The ravioli and gnocchi are wonderful although the smoked pork spaghetti was a little smoky for my taste. We have also tried the veal main and squid appey, both were excellent. If the taleggio and mushroom tart is on the menu, order it! Our only complaint is that it is a little cramped inside but we are already looking forward to going back.

Tremendous

I have been eating here at least twice a month for over three years and love it. Every time the food is fresh and delicious and never have I had a questionable meal. The service is very good although the lunch rush can be pretty busy sometimes. This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in the Surrey / Langley area and a must try for anyone in the area.

Less Than Expected

My girlfriend and I were looking forward to trying Bistro Pastis during Dine Out but came away disappointed. After reading some of the other posts, I agree with Mocha that the service was rushed and barely acceptable for a fine restaurant. Our appetizers arrived within 1 minute of ordering and seconds after the bread. If you chose to order a bottle of wine as we did, be prepared to drink fast. The whole evening felt rushed. I can only guess that Rasputin enjoyed the wine far more than the meal as it was fettuccini served with the coq au vin, not gnocchi and crème caramel is not on the dine out menu. I do agree with graham’s comment that the mark up on the wine prices is even higher than usual. Out meal started with the onion tart and fennel salad. The tart was delicious, made with an egg base and had good rich flavor and left us wanting another. The salad had good flavour but was light on the cheese and fennel for our tastes. We had the steak and Coq au Vin for the mains which were ok. The steak was cooked perfectly and very tender but was a small portion and we have had better fries at diners. The coq au vin had decent flavour but was also a very small portion and lacked sauce which left the fettuccini plain. Desert was a tasty, rich chocolate mousse. Overall it was an ok meal but disappointing for what we were expecting and did not leave us with wanting to come back to try their regular menu.

Excellent

After last years great dinner at Trafalgars we had to return and were very impressed once again. The service was professional and the staff seems genuine. We started with the mussels and the goat cheese samosas. The mussels were outstanding, cooked perfectly and the broth was tremendous. The samosas were average due to the small serving size and lack of goat cheese. Then came the main course. We both had the short rib shepherd’s pie and are still talking about it. As we both enjoy braised dishes, this was truly excellent. The mango cheesecake was excellent and surprisingly light while the chocolate torte was possibly too rich, but it got finished anyways. Another excellent meal and great over all experience at Trafalgars.

Dissapointed

We had the $25 dine out Vancouver meal the other night and were not impressed. The ambiance was good and my girlfriend especially like the old pressed tin ceilings, but the food left much to be desired. We started with the seared tuna and goat cheese brulee which were served cold and refrigerator cold, respectively, and the tuna was served sans pumpkin seeds. I am not sure if this was their intent, but both would have been better slightly warm. We followed with the mushroom pot pie and trio of pork. The crust of the pot pie was overly dry and tasted store bought and the mushrooms were flavourless. The pork had a healthy serving size but one of the trio was incredibly salty, although the reduction was quite well done. We both had the brownie for desert which was dry and uninspired. Also, the wine list was limited and pricey and service erratic. We will not be returning any time soon.

Good coffee, medicore sandwhiches
Submitted Tuesday, September 4, 2007 - 2:28pm [Dine in]

I have tried a few of the bagel sandwhiches at Benny's and find them to be medicore at beast. The bagels themselves are quite qood but they seem to overload them with toppings. The mex bagel for example is covered with gooey red and green slop and tastes horrible.
On the plus side, the coffe is quie good.
