Guu Original838 Thurlow St, Vancouver
Best Izakaya in town
Submitted Tuesday, November 1, 2005 - 7:35pm [Dine in]

Guu is a kind of tavern which is called “Izakaya” in Japanese. This style of eating is usually reasonably priced and frequented by students in Japan, as such, its popularity is restricted to that same age group and you won't find a business crowd going there to impress their clients. Here however, we have no preconceived notions like that in place and the “Izakaya” tavern presents itself as a new and exciting venue to relax and enjoy but even after the novelty wears off, Guu is without a doubt, the best “Izakaya” in town. Don't go if you are looking for california rolls and tempura. Instead, peruse the menu and pick anything and everything that looks weird like the hardboiled egg wrapped in pumpkin meat, deep fried and served with special house sauce. You just can't lose by going to Guu!

Dragon Ball Tea House1007 W King Edward, Vancouver
Best Bubble Tea in Town
Submitted Friday, October 21, 2005 - 10:40pm [Dine in]

Simply put the quality of the Bubble Tea here is without par in Vancouver. With so many of these places popping up all over the place, it's easy to try different ones but if you've been to Dragon Ball, the rest will pale in comparison. It's a testimonial to the quality when you see just how busy it is given its oddball location. One of the best tests of the quality of the bubble tea is if the tapioca balls freeze up in the slush, these ones stay soft the whole time you're drinking no matter how long you choose to nurse your drink. My personal favorite is the blueberry slush with half tapioca and half coconut jelly. For those unfamiliar with the snacks at these places, try the thick cut toast with condensed milk.

No Disappointments
Submitted Wednesday, September 14, 2005 - 6:18pm [Dine in]

The food here is excellent and anyone familiar with eating in a Hawker Centre in Singapore or Malaysia will be happy with the results given some of the limited ingredients that they have to work with here. The food is tasty and fresh made by people who obviously know the cuisine. The one negative review that I've read here is probably from someone who does not know the cuisine or the culture and well let's face it, not everyone likes to eat steak either. I gave an ambience rating of solid because it's just like you would find in Singapore, nothing fancy, just good food. Service rating is also solid just because there are limited seats and odd hours. Food Rating is is Outstanding because of the authenticity and I really like food from that area. Overall rating is Outstanding because it gives you exactly what you expect. Favorites are Mee Pok & the Lamb Curry. Where else can you get stuffed for $10?
