Delicious Modern Japanese Food and Very Nice Ambience
Submitted Sunday, January 18, 2009 - 6:50pm [Dine in]

The place has a very nice decor and is definitely suited most for a romantic dinner for two, although it will be a very nice place to take your good friends too. Service was prompt and excellent. The food was very nice Japanese food with a bit of Modern touch. The tuna tataki was very delicious and not fishy at all; the sauce was also not as sour as the other tuna tataki's I've tried. The kurobuta pork entree was simply outstanding, although my date and I thought the desert was so-so. They also have a very nice selection of wines. Overall, I would definitely come back to taste the other food in there.

Great Japanese home food

We tried going to Toshi once because our friend recommended it to us. We were very pleased with the food. The sushis were all fresh and in perfect sizes (not too large but not too small either). Rolls were decent; you have to order the right ones and you will not be disappointed. Probably our most favorite dishes were the Black Cod (Gindara) and the Spicy Beef. The two dishes warranted us coming back there and sure enough, we are now regulars there. The line-ups are crazy and we know that, but it really is worth the wait. Just remember not to come in big groups or thinking to stay longer for a chat with your friends after dinner.

Great food but decent service

COAST restaurant has the most delicious crab cake I have ever tasted. We first went there during the Vancouver Dine-out event in the 2007 and we went back a couple times after that. Every time we went there we were always satisfied with the taste of the food, however what I have noticed from my last couple visits were that the servers weren't very attentive and were a bit cold to us (probably because we were an Asian table and did not order any alcohol). Overall, I would highly recommend going there for the food but just be patient with your servers like we did.

OK Food, WORST service I've had in years

My girlfriend and I went there just because the Sha Lin Noodle House was closed at that time and we longed for noodles. We ordered 2 bowls of noodles and 1 order of the small pork dumplings. Our server, a young Asian guy, said that they were out of pork dumplings and started to suggest other things which we simply replied no to. I then said to the server "It's fine, we'll just have the noodles" but really my girlfriend wanted something else. So after the server placed the order, she called him again to order some other type of dumplings, to which the server replied "But they're making it right now." So we said to him that we'll just add on our order, we know the noodles were being made. So the noodles came out and we weren't impressed, they tasted just OK. To our surprise, the next item brought to our table was the pork dumplings that they originally said they were out of. So we were happy and we enjoyed the dumplings. After a little while, the SECOND dumplings arrived (the ones that my girlfriend ordered after). So we were confused and then we called the server. We explained to him that we only ordered that because we thought they were out of the pork dumplings. The server looked at me cynically and he was just quiet. So I asked him if it's possible to cancel it because we haven't even touched it and he said yes. After that though, he started yelling (yes, yelling) at the other server in Mandarin saying how he hated "the customers" because he said he knew that we wouldn't be able to finish all food we ordered and that's why he warned us that "it" has been made. Unfortunately for him, I am a Chinese descend so even though I didn't understand 100% of what he said, I understood enough to call him back and confront him. So I told him that if the item wasn't returnable, I would just pack it to go and pay for it, because I told him I didn't like the way he tried to talk behind my back in Mandarin. He tried to avoid it by saying he was talking about other customers (what a server! talking about how bad other customers are in front of HIS customer!). I then forced him to give me the dumplings packed up to go and forced to pay because I didn't want him to blame me on his mistake. If the owner reads this review, I just want to tell you to watch over your staff and try not to hire young people to be servers because they tend to be emotionally unstable (our server looked like he was 18-19 years of age). In conclusion, the food was decent but unfortunately the service really turned us down and we never will come back. We've been telling our friends not to go either. Think twice before you go! If you really wanna try out their food, I suggest you do take-outs!
