Go for the glasses of beer....
Submitted Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - 8:31pm [Dine in]

and stay for the stale smoke smell and bar fights. This place is a nasty throw back to the bad eighties beer parlors. I have been in twice, had one drink while waiting for someone and left as quickly as possible. Seriously I could not stomach even the though tof eating here. This place just gives Poco a bad name. And I LOVE walking through all the smokers to get in. I thought there were bylaws.

I don't know how many bad reviews I 've put up here. Better question is why do I go back. It's never my choice to go here, but next time people insist I will seriously sit in my car in the parking lot and wait.

THe service is terrible and SLOW- especially to get your bill which does come in handy in calculating the ever decreasing tip. The waitress brought hte kids the wrong drinks and my husband the wrong beer. My sons' milkshake that was ordered with the drinks came when he was half way through his dinner even though we inquired about it twice. No apolgy. I ordered a special burger, but I asked for a veggie patty not a beef one. IT was to have blue cheese and crispy onions on it. When I got it, it tasted only like some blue cheese dressing was put on it and there were no crispy onions. I asked where they were and the waitress said "oh we don't have any today" Well when that is one of the major compnents of the "special " burger, you think I'd be told first. I told here if I"d known that I'd have changed my order. She looked stupefied.

THe desserts are no longer special here and must be prefab. The sticky toffee pudding was neither sticky nor did it have any "toffee". It was white bread nuked in a dish with TONS of undercooked apples, a little custard and some jarred caramel sauce. It was gross.

When the bill came I asked my waitress why they'd charge me $1.50 more to change the beef patty to veggie, but they didn't take anything OFF the bill when my burger came with no crispy onions. Again she looked stupfied.

This chain better shake its head and wake up. I for one will shed no sentimental tears when White SPot goes out of business.

Another odd sushi place
Submitted Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - 12:53pm [Dine in]

I was excited when I saw this place. It looked funky and new, different from other sushi places. First time I ordered take out while waiting the waitress almost pushed me into a chair to sit and wait andthen brought out tea for me a my year old? I said it was take out and she nodded. Then she brought out some of those meat on a stick things - I told he we did not eat meat and she looked hurt. I It is complimentary she said. I told her thanks but we dont' even eat free meat. I felt really uncomfortable about the whole thing.

I tried again and took a friend for lunch. There wereno sushi rolls on the menu only combo specials. We had to beg to get them to make sushi. Again came abunch of free things we did not want or order. When se did not eat them again with the pouty face. THe sushi we finally got was fine, but I like to be kind of anonymous in a restaruant and do no tlike to feel I owe them anything except to pay the bill and tip if appropriate. THis place feels too needy for me even thought I had to give it all 3 stars.

Great Food and service
Submitted Sunday, May 24, 2009 - 12:43am [Dine in]

But please change the techno-freakin music and turn it down. It's nonstop techno - I'd go nuts if I worked there.

Otherwise, the food, kobe meatballs and spaghetti were amazing and the (over-priced at $28) prawns(4) with small bowl of"poutine" fries and stirfried mystery greens were great.

Partner loved the caesar salad at $9 and the cocktails were good, but who really buys a $14 martini - like seriously . Even if I were a millionaire I'd find it stupid. And I can tell you no bottle of $680 wine could make me happier than having $680 in my pocket. By the looks of all the young people in there dropping $200+ for dinner I'd say they must have alot more credit that brains 'cause I know they don't all have that kind of cash. I can afford the place but don't do it often.

The service was top notch though which helps compensate for the prices. We walked in on a Saturday night with no reservations and were seated in 10 minutes even thought it was busy. I would return.

Pita Pit Today
Submitted Wednesday, April 22, 2009 - 8:00pm [Dine in]

This Pita Pit was a horror today. Usually awesome girl is there and she can handle being on her own. But really what kind of owner or management would have one person working in a fast food restaurant at a busy Burnaby location on a weekday? Not a very smart one.

I was hoping for a better experience but I should have followed my gut and bolted when I walked in. There were exactly 4 people ahead of me and I did not walk out of this joint with my pita until 25 minutes after I walked in. This one poor woman was doing her best but she could be expected to do it all. She was supposed to take the orders and the money, prep and refill the toppings, cook the food on the grill, make the pitas to order and answer the phone and take phone orders at the same time. She was out of many of the toppings I wanted as she did not have time to refill. And, my pita was half the size that awesome girl makes. Sure hope she hasn't quit.

Anyway, I would seriously reconsidered this place as I really don't want to waste my entire lunch hour waiting. THis is not a one time thing, There is very often only one person working here. What terrible management.

More Edible Mall Sushi
Submitted Monday, April 20, 2009 - 7:34pm [Dine in]

Sashimi Sushi is for the masses. It neither excites nor offends.

This location is better than the Lougheed Mall one, but not as good as the Poco one.

Like other mall sushi places, I find that one time the servings are a completely different size than another. I want what I expect especially from a take out location. Like other inexpensive sushi places it uses cucumber instead of avocado in the California roll. This place often uses way too much seaweed for my taste. But it does n a pinch.

Would not go back
Submitted Monday, April 13, 2009 - 1:46pm [Dine in]

Went there for breakfast (late) on a weekday. It was not busy. Waited for 5 minutes to be acknowldged and then like the other reivewer said waited another five after we were asked how many while the seater diappeared.

It tok 50 minutes from the time we walked into the reastarant until we got our food. Far too long at a chain restaurant especially if you have kids with you.

The kid's meal at $6 got a small juice and 1/2 a waffle with whipped cream and frozen strawberries. Had to ask for syrup. Does not come with it. A toasted English muffin is $3 - I kid you not. That is more than a whole bag of them at teh grocery store.

You know when you go out for breakfast and the meal is so huge you cannot finish it all.? Not a problem here. The omelet that I ordered I asked for 3 items, two of them vegetable and cheese. I specally said NO gREEN peppers. I received what looked like a 2 egg omelet with a gross slick of plastic looking cheese on top, filled with green peppers. SInce it was not on the menu, they charged me for a ham and cheese omelet. They did not take andy $$ off for the (ham and other items) that I did not have BUT did charge extra for the ones I did such as green onion. RIP OFF. I will say the hashbrowns were good but that was about it. I also cannot fathom how breakfast restaurants think it's ok to serve burnt toast. This is not the only place I have had this. This is one of your main items.

We waited another 15 mintues after eating for the bill that never came. THe waitress was MIA most of the time. I went to the front desk to tell them and received no apology. She did however point out the TIP function on the interac machine. $40 for a family breakfast to too much for me. I'm not sure when adult breakfast entrees topped teh $10 mark but that's too rich for me when it's egg and toast combos. and variations.

And little else. Oh it does emtpy your wallet. For over $30 we got one appetizer(spring rolls that taste the same as the ones you but at Costco) one curry, one pad thai. Oh and rice, that was extra, you don't get it with the runny curry HUH? Curry passable but nothing spectacular. The pad thai here was never outstanding but it has gotten worse over the years.. They use the wrong size noodles and there is no "sauce" of any kind to speak of, just red colour, two green onions, no bean sprouts I could see and a tablespoon of peanuts. No heat either. Blech. Pretty much our list trip here.

Oh and my friend acutally had a nap while waiting for the service. It was that slow.

I did not like this place at all. It was just all too healthy and organic without tasting good. The portions were small, service average and really the whole thing was nothing special.

I would just like to pass a tip on to the manager. Deep fried seaweed should not be considered an edible food item and should not be placed on any type of food. Is the seaweed supposed to be heatlhy ? Is it healthier deep fried? That in itself made me dislike this place. I would never return.

Acceptable mall sushi
Submitted Saturday, March 14, 2009 - 3:57pm [Dine in]

This place actually had pretty good sushi and I think they might even use real crab in the California rolls. It's a little more expensive than some other mall sushi places but still pretty good.

My only two complaints are that the portion sizes vary. One time you order two rolls and they're huge and the next time teh same oreder is much smaller. Plus the Dynamite rolls are those giant ones that you can't stuff into you're face. Only order those if you're going to be eating it alone.

The worst part about this place is the staff. They barely speak English which makes it hard to order or make changes and they NEVER smile.

Pretty good but not a stand out
Submitted Friday, March 13, 2009 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

Been to this place three times now, since my first horrible attempt at eating here. The food is creative and pretty good. Somewhat over-priced for the portion size. The quesadilla are good but I have had them made from the same recipe at another restaurant that were MUCH better and a larger serving. The yam fries are VERY disppointing, being merely large CHUNKS of baked yams not even closely resemling a fry. My friend had the mushroom burger and said it was mushy and not memorable but the bun was great. A veggie burger with no cheese and a salad should not cost $15 unless the Queen is serving it to you.

The decor is cool and the service was much better than I expected. The redeeming feature would be coming here for coffee and dessert. I have done that and both coffees(specialty and regular) as well as the desserts are awesome. Kinda but not too healthy.
I would try this place again.

Not sure about this place
Submitted Friday, March 13, 2009 - 5:53pm [Dine in]

Well one thing I can tell you is don't go there if you're hungry. HALF of a wrap with a hand ful of undressed Costco greens and and thimble full of lukewarm unseasoned lentil soup will set you back over $10.

I have been here a few times as I have a friend who loves this place and Chai tea. Now as I don't like chai tea or fruit smoothies there is little to tempt me in that department. The wraps are ok but seriously I have had ones just as good at a local coffee shop. Plus I find I still burp up the spices hours later. The roti bread is good. I have not had a platter but would maybe try that if I had to go again. They are good about coming around with free samples.

I's say the ambiance is totally cool and great for one time but after that the food has to win me over. I'm not a huge eater, and I feel like I still need something when I leave. So try it once and then you decide.

Wake me up when the sushi comes....
Submitted Thursday, March 5, 2009 - 8:55pm [Dine in]

On a weeknight in Victoria is it really necessary to wait over one HOUR for your sushi in a restaurant that is only 1/2 full? Really?

When it came I wasn't even hungry anymore. Then when I picked it up it fell apart. What I finally got in my face was good but the whole experience just sucked by then. When we ordered we were told it was 20 minutes if we ordered sushi NOT 60. Plus other people that came in after us and ordered sushi got theirs first. One couple came in ordered, ate and left before us. That just makes me angry and I wiil not go back.

Waitresses are hard to find here. Order 2 at a time. Bigs screens were good and the virtual golf and mini golf set up totally fun. Kinda a scary crowd though. Didn't really feel safe on a Saturday night. Be warned there's often mega roadblocks on the way out of this casino location. it opens rightinto the casino so if you're into that it's reight there. It's not really that convenient either so I probably won't be back.

Ok but wouldn't return
Submitted Thursday, February 26, 2009 - 5:00pm [Dine in]

Stopped in this little strip mall joint. It was busy at lunch but not too busy.

The free green tea was totally funky - it tasted kinda like burnt old coffee or something. Once I tasted the miso soup and found it had the same funky background taste I figured it was the water somehow. Whatever, I left both.

The California roll was ok but the dynamite roll was one of those that are way too big to fit in your mouth, so it falls apart. If you try to cut or rip it first it agains falls apart because of the nori. Either way it was unpleasant. It also has some weird light brown sauce on it. FInally the deep fried prawn in it was cold and soggy. It did however sport avocado and not cucumber which is good.

The rice on both rolls was strangely mushy. The rolls were also preprared I might add and just cut when you order.

NOthing was TOTALLLY gross but if I woke up with food poisoning tomorrow I would not be surprised. The whole meal just left a samll "ew" in my mouth. Would not go back.

Submitted Friday, February 13, 2009 - 8:08pm [Dine in]

Went for a weekday breakfast with my kid. Apple juice was good, non filtered and the coffee could have been worse.

Homefries were good but not spectacular. Toast was weird. You only get one piece with an order and it has weird caraway seeds or something nasty in it. There is only one kind of toast. And the jam was TERRIBLE had a weird background flavour.

Breakfast burrito was very good and not totally covered in 2 inches of cheese like some places do when they have poor quality.

The food here is good, we had no waits, servers were excellent and superfriendly and the food came in good time.

The only thing is they should know that being good and veggie, food doesn't have to have odd flavours like the toast and jam. Just make them great adn normal.

To the BP Alfredo sauce. Just take one part wallpaper paste and add 3 parts skim milk. Be sure not to add any garlic, salt or flavour of any type and it will be perfect. What a nasty mess. DO NOT order this dish EVER. I seriously would be embarassed to serve this to a dog.

Kid's had pizza. Said the auce tasted good but the crust was way too much and had no flavour. They also hate they way they took one bite and the cheese all came off.

Caesar salad had exactly 3 croutons on it. Family of 4 - one lost out.
Drinable house wine was better than most restaurants at $5.99.

But really, food should be better at any restaurant which is why I never go to BP and wil continue this pattern.

Pretty Good
Submitted Saturday, January 3, 2009 - 12:05am [Dine in]

I read the reivews and made a reservation with cautious optomism. The comments about the atomosphere and music befuddled me. There ws VERY quiet opera(Pavarottti) - nice - in the back ground and the atmosphere was classic Italian dining room.

Firsts, Caesars salad very good as well as the bread with pesto, Insalata Caprese was VERY boring, average and overpirced at $10. Ingredients were worth maybe $0.75.
Vegetarian Pasta dishes were cooked well but overpirced. Chicken too was very good but VERY small serving.

All in all the food was pretty good but prices not so good. Liquor prices were average. Dessert did not fair so well, Chocolate mousse, was acutally a factory made chocolate cake. Creme caramel could have been much better. ANd TIramisu, maybe I don't know what it's suppose to be or taste like, but I did not know it was frozen. They most obviously do not make the desserts in house. All in all the food was better than say Ear's but should be much better for the price.

I've heard bad things about this Keg. I went with a group during the week andit was early so it was probably better. The salmon was cooked fine, but nothing I could not do at home. It came with nice asparagus and the garlic mash were awesome.

The place had been updated a little but it still is pretty much the same Keg from the 80's. They really should all be on par ambiance-wise if the prices are the same, but they're not. I will add though that they really do not consider vegetarians at all and if your're veg go somewhere else or you'll starve.

Submitted Monday, November 17, 2008 - 7:47pm [Dine in]

I hate it when this site removes reviews for no good reason. I already reviewed this terrible place and it was removed. I wrote nothing that was against the rules.

We went with a large group and had called in advance. The service was terrible, the bills were all wrong. The kid's food was way over prices and under tasty, and burned. Some people waited up to 1.5 hours for a meal while the person next to them had finished and hour before. Some people never got anythign and were still charged. It was an awful dog fight and I woudl NEVER take a group there again. Plus what food did come was nasty. ANd then they added on a 15% "service" charged and didn't tell people so they'd still tip on top of that. Booo.
