Good food - overpriced - Well priced drinks
Submitted Thursday, May 16, 2013 - 4:53pm [Dine in]

So we stopped by on the weekend. I disagree with the person who said the patio was nice. Yuk - who wants to sit on a sidewalk beside the parking lot of a strip mall. So we went inside. I'd say this is the worst Brown's patio anywhere.

We were seated in a nice booth. I did not find the washrooms confusing. But, I guess I've been going to the bathroom for a while now. There are many restaurants where you have to walk by the bathroom to get the the kitchen - just logistics sometimes.

The drinks are the best part - their $4 house wine is great. I'm not sure why someone would be "shocked" by a $2.50 charge for tonic and lime - that's a standard price for pop in a restaurant as far as I know.

The blackedned halibut sandwich was delicious with plenty of fish - I upgraded to yam fries for $1 = well worth it, The cheese burger was said to be delicious too. We were not asked if we wanted dessert or anything else so we just paid and left. The food was good, but a little too high priced for what you got.

The staff was not very friendly and our waitress barely spoke to us at all and was very slow. I guess you can't have it all.

I don't get the reviews
Submitted Wednesday, May 1, 2013 - 8:39am [Dine in]

Really, I don't get it. I guess perhaps because this is a restaurant review site and maybe people are reviewing the food? The food was tolerable. The salmon and pasta were at least edible. The steak was like a shoe made into pot roast! It was NOT a steak. The dessert was ok but not memorable because I don't even remember. It couldn't be because of the drinks because despite having 4 I could not taste the alcohol nor did I even get a buzz. Big money to be made there. The worst was the appetizer. The description here says "taco chips and salsa". It wasn't even TORTILLA chips and salsa it was one of those nasty anti pasta plates or whatever, with processed meat and cheese. My vegan friend was not impressed as she thought she could at least eat the "taco" chips. Most people just sent the plate back untouched

But, the reason you go I guess is for the show. So, don't bother at all. No one in my group found in remotely funny. Nor did most of the audience who tried to chuckle politely or uncomfortably? The show, while the staff had some musical talent, had no taste, or class to the point of being gross. I just spent the whole night waiting for it to be over. I would much rather take my $100 plus (per person!) with drinks and "tip" and go to a nice club downtown and listen to good music or see good improv. This is not it.

Winning streak ends
Submitted Sunday, April 28, 2013 - 3:00pm [Dine in]

After my spectacular breakfast at a Pantry in Whiterock a couple of weeks ago I was excited to try this one. Winning streak for the Pantry ends at one.

Kids frech toast was bright yellow and tasteless. Adult french toast was positely burned and tasted of nothing but burnt cinnamon.

Omelette was supposed to have "roasted mushrooms" and "caramelized onions". They were neither roasted nor caramelized as they were at the other Pantry. They were just sliced white mushrooms and half raw red onion. The hashbrowns had very few crispy parts and the sourdough toast was - one piece warm bread and one piece burnt to a crisp. Andy they served that. EMbarrassing. WOrse yet, I paid for it. Who's bad I guess?

Never again.

i went here based on a recommendation. Taom and Michelle were supposed run a great place. When I got there I was a little leary as there was a sign outside for Bubble tea - that's always a good warning that you might not get what you expect - unless of course you're looking for bubble tea. I was not. I was looking for good lunch diner food.

The place may have been sold as the proprieters did not relaly look like a Tom and Michelle. I took a chance and was glad I did.

The chicken burger was plain but very good and the fries were seasoned wedgess cooked perfectly. Friend said the tuna sandwich with soup was delish and the shrimp sandwich was done pefectly - not trendy and over done. Just the way it should be. The potato salad was the bomb and should have been dessert. It was hands downthe best restaurant potato salad I have ever had. Excellent I will be back.

I came here to write what happened to me today and read the previous review! OMG the same thing. My friend and I both ordered falafel combos. When I got my receipt I was charged more than was on the menu board. Old guy played dumb and said oh its a mistake - no one ever said that before. Ya right. The other review was from last summer. What a scam - it doesn't matter the amount - it's a rip off and it must be illegal I would think.

Anyway the falafel was good, but I've had better and the greek salad was very oily with only a dusting of feta powder and the peppers in the salad were shriveled beyond recognition - not from the dressing - from being old before they used them. I won't be back,

I'm still thinking about my breakfast!
Submitted Tuesday, April 9, 2013 - 12:26pm [Dine in]

We went on the weekend. I don't eat breakfast out much but really love it. This place knows how to do it right! the coffee was hot, fresh, delicious and plentiful. They have nice good sized mugs too, not those silly teacup things.

I had an omlette and it was perfect! Cooked properly so it was well done with cooked veggies(I hate the half raw ones in omelettes) caramelized onions and just the right amount of cheese. The toast was perfect with not too much butter and the hash browns, shredded, crispy and amazing(I could have used more of those but didn't need them). The whole plate was the perfect size not too small and not too much. Excellent.

The grilled cheese was cooked perfectly and melted with real cheese not chemical cheese. The burger was declared awesome as well with 3 types of onions on it including a huge crispy onion ring!

The whole meal was a hit and totally worth it. Best breakfast place I've been to in years. Pay a fair price and get a fair and delicious meal in return. Go with coupons and then expect them to give you other than whats on the coupon you will be disappointed. Why do people do that?

I dunno, I don't remember ever going to Quiznos. I don't know why. My kids like SUbway I guess. Went with work people.

I had a veggie deluxe. I wouldn't call it deluxe. A regular sized sandwich was over $7 with tax- not even a combo. The bread was neither toasted not cold just inbetween. The lettuce was a little brown and a lot of those hard core pieces. I couldn't tell what type of cheese was on it though it was supposed to be 2 kinds. They were indiscernable. The the guacamole tasted chemically and there was not th elarge choice of veggies like at subway. The hot pepper things they give you and the olives on it made the whole meal taste just kind of sour. No thanks.

How much did they pay? I hope less than the $70 it cost me
Submitted Monday, February 11, 2013 - 5:09pm [Dine in]

I swear these places pay to get on those food tv shows. I have better breakfast at Ricky's for sure!

Went on family day because the family wanted to try it after seeing the tv shows. Walked in and thought I was in one of those old dusty kitchy truck stops you use to have to eat in during family driving vacations. You know the kind that sell tacky plastic totem poles and t shirts? Oh wait so does this place.

There was a long wait and it was unclear who to give our name to. The owner just stood there at the cash register like he was oblivious to anything around him. It was weird. It looked old and dirty and I would not have stayed if my peeps didn't want to. I went to the bathroom and I swear I have never been in a ladies room in my life, that reeked of pee - at least not in a civilized country. Gross. The fixtures and walls were nasty old and dirty too.

We waited well over the 20 minutes we were told and then were seated without being asked at the counter! We were a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. We wanted a table. But, after being told we'd have to wait another 15 we just took it. The seats were very close together and uncomfortable.

We ordered and received our food in acceptable time which was good. The only good meal out of the 4 was the mushroom and cheese omelette. It was nicely done. Served with very lightly buttered(i,e, not enough) toast and diced hashbrowns from a bag of frozen - they were not homemade. But it was ok. Served with a plastic packet of jam.

The fish and chips were bad - the fish was rubbery and fishy, the fries good. But NOT worth close to $13. The portion was small to average. The burger was declared to be not very good and had soft rubbery back bacon on it instead of real bacon. Who really likes back bacon? No one. Again average sized burger with a smallish serving of fries. Another close to $13 ch ching. The kids grilled cheese was not very cheesy nor was it very grilled - more like toasted bread with melted cheese and a few fries for well ove $8! plus another $2.75 for a hot chocolate. . A kids meal should never be $12 off the kids menu. The entrees all came with "greens" which was a 2" square piece of lettuce.

With a couple of soft drinks and a tip, a family of four had lunch for $70!! No value there at all. We paid $80 at the Whitespot last week for dinner and the adults had booze!

Some other items like some kind of pot pie seemed to have larger servings but we thought the portion sizes were almost skimpy given the price for what we ordered.

I think they should send some "mystery diners" in to these places before the food networks pump them up because once again this place is NOTHING like what it appeared to be on TV.

Glad I went once so I know not to go back.

I always read reviews of this restaurant saying how hot the waitresses are. If that's why you go to the place, where's all the hot men in speedos? That's what I want in a restaurant. I want a big bulging penis extentions encased in spandex serving me. I hope you listen Cactus Club - I am a" woman of business" and demand this level or service so I can impress my clientelle. OK? Average Dinner - disappointing menu
Submitted Thursday, January 3, 2013 - 7:46pm [Dine in]

Went in before a giants game. I was hoping for more from these reviews. The place was fine inside - not updated but it was what it was. Not dirty at all. Reminded me of a an Italian run Toronto diner.

Waitress was ok not offensive at all. When everyone ordered the same pop, she brought a wine jug full of it for the table. Food - mac and cheese very good, but portion small for the over $10 pice tag. Fish and chip was large and declared "edible". Not a rave by any means. The lasagne was not lasagne at all but all the of ingredient s of lasagne mixed up in a bowl. It was called "allright". Kids grilled cheese was average and fair value for $4 - but the fries were not that good. Very greasy. A blt with avocado was thin and small on grocery store bread. Potato salad was home made and fairly good.

All in all a solid average restuarant. If I had to eat there again, no problem. If I had other options, probably not.

Not a fan. I like inexpensive meals, but not if they taste like it. I had the curry pasta. Yuk. Weak, thin tasteless sauce. Very few of the vegetables in it, mostly just pasta. The alfredo was deemed bad as well. The only people who liked their meals were the people who had the chicken souvlaki. And they really only like if for the quantity, not the quality. A white carb-fest. Waitress would not give us separate bills. Would not return.

How many fake reviews is this clown going to post? Every week a fake post is posted in ESL English. The bakery food now doesn't make you fat and is most delicious. I would never go there because he is such a goof. Stay away. Any reviewer who seems to have only one post is often fake as are the ones for this place.

This place is great. I've been coming here for years and though I have had better thai food, for the price point and reliablility this is great. We come here for lunch often for the specials. It includes soup, spring roll and an entree and if you have water, with tax and atip you are out for under $10. I spend more at the food court at metrotown sometimes.

We love Ricky's. Breakfast is served until 4. Prices are consistent with other breakfast places. Pancakes were fantastic. Two kinds of hashbrowns - shredded and the deep fried cubed ones. We both had sourdough toast -the pieces were very large and perfectly buttered. Breakfast meats were done perfectly. Any my Omlette was hot, well cooked with the cheese just perfect - a masterpiece., Not sure why i'd go anyhwere else around here for a sit down breakfast.

Ok choice for dining alone
Submitted Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - 8:59pm [Dine in]

I was in Victoria for business and found myself craving more than some take out in my hotel room. I wandered around the city - most of the decent places were too busy, some of the tourist trap places I checked Dinehere first and opted out. I didn't want to go to an ethnic place where I was alone at one of the two occupied tables. So, I tried the Keg. It was a good option for being alone as they suggested I sit in the lounge where 4 of the 5 occupied tables were lone business diners.

Being vegetarian, the Keg is tough. I read on the internet to ask them to make portabello fajitas instead of chicken but I don't know where that came from as there are no fajitas ont he menu at all. I have not seen them on a KEG menu in many years. There is really NOTHING vegetarian at the Keg for entrees. What a stupid move on their part. That is why I rarely go.

Anyway I ended up ordering the spinach salad with strawberries cranberries nuts and blue cheese and I ordered the snap peas and aparagus tempura. I have had both before at other kegs. The salad this time was drowned in some type of unfavourable dressing to the point that the greens were soggy and dripping. The tempura veg was ICE COLD. Once tempura gets ice cold it gets soggy. The whole dinner was not great, but of course I didn't want to complain or draw attention to myself as I was alone.

I think I'm done with this chain. You should really not waste your money here.

A small Hot Mess
Submitted Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - 6:21pm [Dine in]

I can really only review what I had, and perhaps I ordered the wrong thing. The breakfasts all looked ok as did the fries and wraps I saw.

Unfortunately I didn't order those things. I had a veggie Cristo sandwich. A Monte Cristo sandwich is a whole sand wich dipped in egg and cooked till golden and crisp like french toast. This was yellow coloured soft floppy bread and small pieces too. Inside was supposed to be avocado, brie, roasted garlic and peppers. I could not taste, nor did I see any peppers. I got a couple of whole chunks of almost raw garlic though. Yuk. The worst was the two premium items I wanted. The brie was so hot it had melted into an indistinguishable liquid mess. Then there were large chunks of hot avocado. Hot avocado is positively gross. The whole sandwich was a complete disaster. Plus it tasted like pesto which was not in the description.

It came with salad and the dressing choices were one - take it or leave it. The salad had some shaved beet on it which was nice, but there was some weird type of green in it that made the whole thing taste a little weird. All this for only $10.95. I want my money back. Wait staff was bored.

Pretty Good Thai in Victoria
Submitted Tuesday, September 11, 2012 - 10:06pm [Take-out]

I've had Thai at a few places in Victoria. Baan was atrocious, Siam good, Noodle box - boring.

Decided to get take out from this place. Had spring rolls which were very good. Not greasy and very tasty. Had a little different taste so you could tell they weren't just deep fried costco rolls like most places they had made them. Pad thai was pretty good as well. The prawns tasted just a tad off but but were good and teh noodles just the right thickness. The only problem was it didn't have any of the pickled radish that pad thai should have. It was also a little expensive for take out - no discount. But, all in all pretty decent.

Half the items on the menu are whited out. I had a tuna club - it was sloppy, mayonaisey and had a ton on nasty margarine on the the toast. The fries looked good but the oil was really old and made the fries taste awful. Waitress was take the order, and drop it off with the bill. Why should she try, when she;s out of a job?

Too bad, i remeber loving Zellers restaurants as a kid. A slow decline to the end of an era.

Too Expensive for what you get
Submitted Tuesday, August 21, 2012 - 9:52pm [Dine in]

Went on a hot sunny Saturday night. We walked right in and got a booth on the patio at 7 pm. I think that says alot. I remember when you used to have to wait an hour or more to sit anywhere at an Earls, especially on a Saturday night.

Waitresses were from the robotic "little black dress" store that cactus club, etc shops for their waitresses too. No personality in any of them. Plastic.

Had an artichoke dip that was served with toasty things and was pretty good but small. They did offer more toasty things though we didn't need them as the dip serving was small for over $10. Beer was very expensive at over $7.50. Wine was not well priced either.

Had a seafood pasta with very miniscule pieces of crab and seafood. It was over $19 - just too much for pasta.

Can't even remember what my partner had as it was not memorable to me or him. He did think it was overpriced as well. Got out for just under $140. Basically a waste of money. I could have prepared the same meal and drinks at home for about $25. I don't plan on a return,
