Great place to fill your belly!
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 2:10am [Dine in]

There's nothing outstanding about this restaurant but overall it is a winner. The food is cheap and plentiful as well as filling and good. The taste is above reproach. The milieu is so-so but that is to be expected. The service is about what you would expect for this type of establishment. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

Just plain mediocre to poor!
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 1:37am [Dine in]

I went to this establishment one time. No more. The food was mediocre to poor as was the service. Therefore, the value was also poor. The ambiance, who cares? The food was poor. Never again. Judging by similar establishments such as Denny's, this place did not cut the mustard. I definitely would not go back.

Good but not great barbecue.
Submitted Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 1:18am [Dine in]

This place is good by Vancouver standards but by absolute southern barbecue standards it is but mediocre.

The pulled pork is good as are the sausages and the brisket. The ribs are tough and poorly cooked, hardly fall-off-the-bone tender. The Cornish game hen is terrible.

If you ever have a chance to eat barbecue in Kansas City or St. Louis or Memphis or Austin you'll think this place is pretty grim.

Excellent baby back ribs!
Submitted Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 8:29pm [Dine in]

I have dined here on numerous occasions and the food, particularly the baby back ribs, are consistently excellent. The service is solid as is the atmosphere. The prices are on the high side, particularly in comparison to southern rib joints but this is to be expected in Canada's high tax environment. Remember, every dollar the government takes from you by force is a dollar you do not have for your own use.

Overall, the quality of Tony Roma's of Coquitlam is quite high and worthy of your patronage.

Davie Mongolian BBQ1161 Dave Street, Vancouver
An excellent all-you-can-eat eatery!
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 3:34am [Dine in]

The Mongolian Grille on Davie is a high-value, do-it-yourself eatery which never fails to satisfy. I have been here on numerous occasions and have never left hungry. The food is fresh and the sauces flavorful and zesty. The all-you-can-eat aspect never fails to satisfy.

The service is attentive and consistent. The milieu is appropriate.

Parking can be sketchy but that is downtown Vancouver. Park at your own risk in this drug-infested city courtesy of a liberal leftist government.

Overall, the dining experience at the Mongolian Grille on Davie is very satisfying and I look forward to my next dining experience at this fine establishment.

Samba Brazilian Steak House1122 Alberni Street, Vancouver
OK but there is better in Seattle.
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 3:20am [Dine in]

I dined at Samba with several others in our party and overall was not particularly impressed. The buffet is mediocre with poor variety and the skewered meats, while not lacking in variety, were also so-so. That is not to say that they aere bad, only that they lacked the punch and flavor that I would have expected. I got the impression that this was only a very approximate imitation of a true Brazilian steakhouse.

If you want to experience a better version of this concept, try Ipanema in Seattle. Now, that is a much better Brazilian steakhouse. You'll notice a big difference in flavor and overall quality.

Wah Wing Restaurant2748 Lougheed Highway, #207, Port Coquitlam
Exceedingly Excellent Szechuan Eatery
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 1:52am [Dine in]

I have dined at this superb Port Coquitlam eating establishment on numerous occasions and it is time to post an update.

I dined here on the evening of 8 August 2008 and the experience was utterly outstanding. The food was as good or better than on any previous visit, which is to say, marvelous. Not only is the food truly outstanding but the consistency of excellence is a thing to behold. I have never had a mediocre dining experience at this restaurant in several years of dining there. The food is flavorful, appropriately and delicately spiced, absolutely fresh, and most savory.

The service is attentive without being solicitous or overbearing. Water glasses are kept filled without fanfare, empty dishes are removed promptly, the proprietor is in attendance asking if everything is to one's satisfaction (which it always is!) and there is a general atmosphere of joviality and satisfaction.

Additionally, the restaurant is appropriately roomy and well decorated, especially since the recent renovation which spruced it up considerably.

Denizens of the greater Coquitlam area are indeed fortunate to have a dining establishment of this caliber in their midst. It surely ranks with the finest Szechuan restaurants in greater Vancouver and I am sure could hold its own with Szechuan eateries anywhere including China.

Kudos to Michael for a job well done!

Keg Steakhouse & Bar, The800 Marine Drive, West Vancouver
Absolute perfection!
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 1:29am [Dine in]

I have dined at the Keg in West Van on several occasions and the experience has always been pleasant; however, on the evening of 4 August 2008 the experience was absolutely outstanding.

The food first of all was without a doubt top notch. I had the prime rib, Keg size. It was perfectly done, flavorful, of a large portion and could compare with the finest prime rib I have had anywhere in North America. The tiger shrimp which accompanied the prime rib were plump and flavorful as well. The remainder of the order including the French onion soup and salad were outstanding. I would say that the food at the Keg in West Vancouver on the evening of 4 August 2008 would rank with the finest at any steakhouse in the Greater Vancouver area.

The service was extremely attentive without being solicitous. All requrests were met promptly with a smile and a "can do" attitude. The waiter(s) were cheerful and highly competent. The order was received exactly as specified.

The atmosphere and decor were typical Keg style, which is to say, appropriate and pleasing.

I was more than impressed with my dining experience at the Keg in West Vancouver and would recommend it without reservation. I am most keen to return to this fine dining establishment.

Dino's Steakhouse and Pizza3180 St. Johns Street, Port Moody
A truly dismal Italian restaurant!
Submitted Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 2:40pm [Dine in]

My wife and I arrived at Dino's at 5:00 p.m. yesterday for dinner. We were the only ones in the restaurant, always a bad sign. A couple of other parties did arrive over the course of the next hour. The restaurant itself was dark and dingy, not at all warm and welcoming. After an appropriate time a waiter arrived to take our drink orders and give us menus. The selection on the menus was poor. At last, I ordered spaghetti and meatballs and my wife ordered pasta alla carbonara. We also ordered meat and shrimp skewers as appetizers.

Five minutes later the waiter returned to the table to unceremoniously state that they had no meatballs! Get this, an Italian restaurant at the beginning of the night's service having no meatballs!!! I reluctantly ordered lasagna instead.

The meat skewers arrived and the beef pieces as well as the pork pieces were totally devoid of seasoning. They were merely chunks of cooked meat. The shrimp was somewhat better in that it at least had some small degree of seasoning although the shrimp were tiny.

The mains arrived in due course and they both were tasteless. Again, there was NO seasoning. Very uninspired cooking indeed. My wife indicated that her carbonara dish was overcooked and the meat was borderline spoiled. This was the WORST lasagna I had ever eaten and the carbonara likewise.

How does a restaurant like this remain in business, now I ask you?

There is a good reason why Rosa's Italian Cucina in Port Moody always has a line out the door and down the street and why this joint was basically empty!

Needless to say, we will never return.

Boathouse Restaurant, The2770 Esplanade Ave, Port Moody
Superb seafood restaurant in PoMo
Submitted Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 2:16pm [Dine in]

I have dined at this establishment on two occasions and have been impressed. Multiple appetizers were all good, particularly their steamed clams. And their New York steak and prime rib were considerably above average. Portion size is good. The service was most attentive and efficient. The building is brand new and the architectural style is appropriate for the food theme. The location is stunning, right on the Port Moody waterfront. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. All in all, this is an excellent restaurant worthy or your patronage.

Adequate Italian food
Submitted Thursday, January 24, 2008 - 3:42pm [Dine in]

This place is solid, nothing more. Food was reasonably good although my steak dish was a bit more marbled than I like, service adequate, ambiance average. Prices a little on the high side. NO comparison to Rosa's Italian Cucina in nearby Port Moody but no wait.

Sfinaki Taverna4061 Hastings St, Burnaby
A wonderful Greek taverna.
Submitted Sunday, December 16, 2007 - 10:30pm [Dine in]

I have dined at Sfinaki on several occasions and have yet to be disappointed. The Greek cuisine is expertly prepared and the flavors are authentic. Especially lovely is the roast lamb which was done to perfection. The salad was excellent. The portion size is very good. The service is attentive and caring. The atmosphere is that of your typical Greek taverna with the wonderful blues and whites of the homeland in evidence. Altogether I would not hesitate to recommend this eating establishment.

I have dined at Baci on one occasion and it was memorable for clearly superior food served by an attentive and friendly waiter who saw to it that everything was enjoyable. Gigi's Pizza & Spaghetti House189 West Broadway, Vancouver
Superb food at a fair price.
Submitted Sunday, December 16, 2007 - 10:07pm [Dine in]

We have dined at Gigi's on numerous occasions and have yet to have a bad experience. The food quality is consistently high and the portion size is adequate. The price is reasonable although I noted on our last visit that the prices had risen from the previous visit. This of course reflects the diminishing purchasing power of the fiat currency and is not a reflection of unfair pricing on the part of Gigi's per se. The service is attentive and the atmosphere is appropriate. Another plus of this restaurant is the fact that the dining room stays open late into the night, long after many other local establishments have closed.

Thai House Restaurant116 W Esplanade, North Vancouver
A superb Thai restaurant at a very good price.
Submitted Sunday, December 16, 2007 - 9:55pm [Dine in]

I have dined at the North Vancouver Thai House on numerous occasions for their Sunday buffet and have always left both satiated and pleased. The food is excellent and although not quite so superb as that of Chada Thai in Coquitlam, it is a close second. The portion sizes at the buffet are all-you-can-eat and so satiation is assured, unlike Chada Thai where the portions are miniscule. The price is most reasonable. On this point, the Thai House once again outdoes Chada Thai where the prices are high, in particular considering the portion sizes. When you consider the quality of the food, the Thai House is a very high value eating establishment. The service is very attentive and the atmosphere appropriate. Overall, this is one of the best dining establishments in the Lower Mainland.

Earl's in West Vancouveris an excellent restaurant and well worth a visit. The food is superb. Of particular note is the Thai noodle salad with chicken. You get a large portion and the dish is most savory. Earl's Bigger Burger is also excellent. The prices are fair and the service is attentive and friendly. Overall, this is a lovely restaurant and is recommended without reservation save for the fact that the noise level is somewhat high due to the presence of copious numbers of raucous diners..

I have dined at this establishment on numerous occasions and it has been consistently good. The food is outstanding as is the service. The appearance of the greeters and the waitresses is way, way above average. The are both friendly and comely. The atmosphere is lovely. The portion sizes are good and you will not leave hungry. Overall, this is an excellent eating establishment although I must say that on my last visit they had deleted a delectable and savory dumpling appetizer from their menu which I found disappointing.
