Guu in Aberdeen4151 Hazelbridge Way, #2790, Richmond
Not bad, but nothing special
Submitted Sunday, May 6, 2007 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

Because it's named Guu, most of us are making comparisons to the downtown counterparts. With that being said, this one is good as is, but nothing special like the one on Robson Street. The food was pretty much standard which isn't bad if you've been to similar types of restaurants in Richmond. Service was pretty nice because we sat at the counter in front of the kitchen. The chefs were pretty entertaining and super nice throughout our dinner. I'd go back only if I'm craving for Japanese food while in Richmond - otherwise I'm loyal to the Guu on Robson Street :)

Steveston Seafood House3951 Moncton Street, Richmond
Fresh seafood out in Steveston
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 11:32am [Dine in]

We found this nice place while walking around Steveston. The restaurant was quite full when we walked in, but we were lucky to get the last table available. I was quite impressed by their menu, as the name of the restaurant suggests...it's all seafood! We couldn't decide what to get because everything seemed so delicious. We ended up ordering the seafood platter and pretty much devoured everything on the plate :p

Usually I'm not nit-picky about small things but I thought the bread was a little bit hard. Overall this was an outstanding restaurant in my opinion. It was worth the short drive from Vancouver. The Steveston area is unique. A good change from the usual downtown establishments we go to.

Pleasant surprise, I may become a regular.

Went here with a few friends and at first I didn't expect much because I've never heard of this place. Prices were very reasonable and the food was tasty. I ordered the roast lamb and it was superb. Also tried the calamari and found it to be done just right. My friend said this place usually isn't busy and I wonder why. Could be the location - on the edge of downtown just before the Granville bridge - and right across from the Cecil. Our waitress was very attentive and seemed to time everything just right. I'll have to go back another day and try other items on the menu. All I can say now is that the roast lamb was delicious!

Lots of regulars which means good
Submitted Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 11:13pm [Dine in]

It was my first time at Yuji's and I must say that I was quite impressed. They don't try to be fancy with the ambiance. I thought it was rather plain looking and brightly lit. The food was outstanding, very fresh and I noticed how skilled the chefs were. One other thing is that I noticed many regular customers. They seemed very well acquinted with them which is a good sign. It's certainly a place I'd go back to when I'm on 4th.

Nice hangout
Submitted Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - 9:51pm [Dine in]

I think this place will have a lot of potential, especially in the summer. The ambiance was very nice, TV screens, bamboo trees, overall a very pleasant atmosphere. The food was solid, I'd have to come back here a few more times to get a good taste of it. Definitely will go back. Beer and drinks are very reasonable!

First time here and I loved it.

The name says it all, oysters! Boy were they ever so delicious. We sampled 4 different kinds of oysters and they were all very fresh. The other dishes were alright as we ordered the crab cakes and the scallop & prawn pasta combo. Also would have expected better bread. I'll definitely go back for some more oysters and beer!

Fun place, great atmosphere
Submitted Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 3:48am [Dine in]

It was my first time at the Stonegrill and I was quite impressed. It was a weeknight and the restaurant was 1/4 full which meant attentive service :)

The food was quite nice as I had a large steak. Actually thought it was quite fun! The waiter recommended a nice wine which went nicely with our meal. We actually ordered the set menus, a bit pricey though, but worth it.

It was a nice setting with a great view of false creek and some expensive yachts. And can't go wrong with the free parking out in the front :)

Submitted Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 3:37am [Dine in]

I've been here on a weeknight and a weekend evening. Like most places the busier it gets the slower your food comes. With that aside it's funky place to have some funky food. My personal favourite is the 'Viva Las Vegas' roll. It practically melts in your mouth! The nigiri sushi was quite delicious too. Ordering from the menu was a bit overwhelming because of all the types of sushi rolls and other dishes.

As for the ambience, it was very different somewhat bizarre; music maybe a tad bit loud. Be prepared to shout across the table to your dinner companion(s). Waitresses were very friendly. Overall a very good experience. Definitely will go back.

The first thing I noticed about this place was the retro furniture. I could swear that I saw one of my parents' old kitchen chairs!

The food was a bit bland in my opinion. But I'll give them the benefit of doubt as I am not a regular vegetarian diner.

I like the idea of an open kitchen, but this leads to scrutiny by the customers. We sat on the side which provided me a good view of the kitchen. Ventilation was poor because my clothes smelled for a couple of days! I had some concerns about the cleanliness of things. I saw the cook cut some vegetables, moved some boxes, flicker the stereo switches, talked on his cell phone, and then back to cooking. I didn't see him wipe his hands at all.

I'd probably go back to this place. Seems like a nice place to wind down. Casual to the very best!

Good food, but...
Submitted Monday, December 18, 2006 - 2:15am [Dine in]

I took a friend here for her birthday because I wanted it to be special. However it was far from it. The timing was all wrong because there were quite a few noisey xmas parties going on at the same time. Not the ideal setting if you know what I mean.

Service was very slow and unattentive. Even the waiter kept appologizing throughout the evening.

Food was really good. Excellent sauces and presentation. Prices were pretty much what I expect. I even had to pay for the Peligrino water which I declined from the beginning. Didn't want to dispute it as I just wanted to get that evening over with. I don't recommend this place for a dinner for two, only for 4 and more!

Good food, good drinks
Submitted Friday, October 27, 2006 - 12:32am [Dine in]

I didn't really have any expectations prior to going to Manzo. But after the meal I felt very satisfied. In many ways it depends on which dishes you order. The bottles of sake / nihonshu were a bit expensive. We ordered a small bottle which costed over 30 bucks! Good though, just like how I had it during my days in Japan :)

Overall, food was fresh and service was attentive. I'll certainly go back when there is enough money in the wallet.

Submitted Wednesday, October 4, 2006 - 7:25pm [Dine in]

Went to this place on a Tuesday night. Not very busy at all. As someone mentioned this restaurant seems to be tucked away at the corner of Aberdeen. Nonetheless, I found this place to be very authentic, as if I was back in Japan. The sashimi was very tasty (though a bit pricey) and everything else we ordered was delicious! Ambiance was solid as I wouldn't expect something too fancy. The food did the talking and I am very satisfied.

We found this place while strolling around on Canada Day. It was the $11.95 steak that caught my attention. My friend ordered the fettucini and we were both impressed by it! $1.95 for a half caesar was a bonus. Nice and friendly staff. It's a good restaurant to pop into when you're in that area.

The food was really good, couldn't complain one bit. I loaded up on the kimchee! Service was okay and the ambience was nothing spectacular. However when the food came it was all delicious!! The price we paid for two was quite reasonable. We could've had one less dish. I didn't know it was unlimited for the side dishes.

I was here on a busy Saturday with a group of people. Food was pretty good, always order the pineapple rice. Location and ambience was pretty good - at least its not in downtown. Service was okay. Is it normal for them to automatically add a 15% gratuity?

Went here for dimsum on Mother's Day. Busy as usual. Food was good too, but nothing outstanding. Very attentive service, a great way to spend a Sunday brunch. When we got out bill I was a bit surprised by the price. Perhaps we ate too much without really knowing it! Location is great because it's free parking at the mall :)

We ordered the set 'healthy lunch menu'. The portions were a bit small, but nonetheless very tasty. I've been here a few times and I've always had enjoyable experiences. Next time I'll come back for dinner - izakaya style!

We had a very large party (over 25 people) and they were able to accomodate us smoothly. First of all I appologize to the other tables around us because we were a noisy bunch. LOL! Anyway, the food was really good and complimented by the great service. I definitely would come back with either 2 people or 25 :)

Submitted Monday, March 27, 2006 - 12:00am [Dine in]

We had a party of around 20 people. At the end of the night everyone said they enjoyed it. The food was really good and the service complimented it. Some dishes were a bit pricey, but luckily they were tasty. I like how this restaurant provides a good mix of food - mild, spicy, sweet, sour, etc... I'd definitely go back - great for large parties because you can sample more dishes.

the real deal
Submitted Sunday, March 26, 2006 - 11:49pm [Dine in]

I've lived in Japan for several years so I have an idea of what a good Japanese restaurant is. It doesn't have to be expensive or all decked out. Guu with Garlic is very authentic in terms of the food and the ambience. Loud - yah. Waiters/waitresses shouting their order - yah. Food - awesome!

It's the combination of the food and experience that really makes this place special.

Downsides is that there is always a long line-up and the place is small.
