Some things about Wings
Submitted Saturday, November 17, 2012 - 11:39pm [Dine in]

I'll make this brief:

there were 3 of us. We waited 5 minutes to get someone to seat us. We waited another 5 minutes to get drinks ordered. We then waited at least 15 minutes to get our waitress back to order some food. Apparently we weren't the only table having difficulty getting service as I looked around. It wasn't crazy busy but busy enough, I suppose. Some surly dude brought out our food after what seemed a long time (30 minutes?) and, as we began to dig into our meals we were all pretty disappointed to say the least. We had an appy to share between us which had some overcooked short ribs and some unsalted and unpeppered Salt & Pepper wings that looked like they'd been on a prison camp diet. One of my friends order the shrimp fettuccine which I tried and it totally tasted like nutmeg was the main ingredient... weird! Our fries were pasty and lukewarm and without any crisp at all. I decided to ask for the manager who, lo and behold, was the surly dude who dropped off our food. I politely complained about all these details and he forced out a small apology and offered a discount on our bill. He didn't seem genuinely concerned at all. It took another 15 minutes after our food was taken away to get our bill and another 15 to pay for it. Not going back. EVER.

inadequate communication
Submitted Saturday, October 20, 2012 - 8:19pm [Dine in]

I should know better than to get excited for anything AYCE but I was and I learned a lesson.

First off, the service was absolute crap. The one guy (I'm pretty sure he was a manager) that mainly served us never smiled once or made eye contact. I did my very best to engage him as a human being but received robotic service at best.

The food was all over the place. For one, the sushi itself was garbage and was void of flavour. The dishes came out so sporadically and a full 10-15 minutes had passed that we thought we were done with our initial order and ordered another batch of food. 5 minutes afterwards, we started receiving MORE food from our first order. We soon realized that we were not going to be able to finish all of our 2nd order and I informed 4 separate servers to discontinue any food that was being prepared for us as we were full. They didn't seem to understand so we gave up and went to pay our bill anyway.

All in all, this place suffers from bad management and communication towards their customers. I can't say I'll be going back any time soon.

Disappointment
Submitted Wednesday, July 25, 2012 - 10:18am [Dine in]

Now let me start out by saying this was the first time trying Filipino food. It's something I've put off for awhile and now I can see why. We started out with the Lumpiang Shanghai which seemed like they were machine made and frozen before being deep fried. Not very tasty to say the least. Our main course included the Pinakbet, Classic Chicken Adobo, and the Pancit Canton. Out of the 3, we only could eat 1 and a half of the dishes. The Pancit Canton was basically stir fried noodled drenched in oil. Not very appetizing but we were able to eat about half of it. The chicken was pretty much okay and was the only dish we finished. The Pinakbet was god awful. The meat tasted funky and almost rancid and the dish as a whole did not come together. We had about a tablespoons worth each and that's it. On the plus side, our server was competent and friendly enough. The restaurant itself was clean and organized. Not enough to make us want to come back unfortunately.

Best street vendor I have tried so far!
Submitted Tuesday, April 5, 2011 - 12:52pm [Take-out]

These guys really love their food and it shows. It also generates excitement for their customers when you hear them speak about it. It worked for me. So far I've been there twice and had the Smoked Salmon "Salmwich" and the Fish & Chips. The Salmwich was outstanding but it was the slaw in it that brought it all together for me. The fish and chips had some tartar sauce and lemon on the side that ended up not being used because the fish (and the batter.. yum) was amazing enough on it's own and did not need to have its delisciousness covered up wth condiments. Worth every penny!

Romano's Pizza902 Granville Street, Vancouver
good cheap eats
Submitted Tuesday, April 5, 2011 - 12:37pm [Take-out]

Deep in the midst of the Granville Street entertainment district there is a battle going on over the best cheap by the slice pizza. Romano's wins every time. 2 slices and a pop for $4! Always fresh and the owners really do their best to make you feel welcome. Is the pizza by any means outstanding? No. But it's good CHEAP pizza and the best you'll get downtown for that price.

I had the Prime Rib Sandwich with aged chedder, carmalized onion and watercress. Let me just say: amazing! Even the bread was fantastic - crispy but not dry - full of flavour. The girl on the register had a bit of a problem with the debit machine being possessed by the devil but all in all it was good honest service for a cafe. The decor is modern and inviting. I will definitely be going back for more sandwiches.

It's a tourist trap

$15 breakfast that seemed like it sat on the warmer a bit too long before getting to our table. $15 breakfast that had maybe two eggs in the omelet and some frozen deep fried home fries. $15 breakfast that would've cost half that at Denny's and would have twice as much food in it.

worth the wait
Submitted Monday, March 8, 2010 - 11:48pm [Dine in]

We ordered the manicotti... as anyone should. Oh man, it's the first time I had to get my dinner wrapped up to go halfway through. This is definitely a feast to be reckoned with. It seemed every plate that went out were filled to the brim with delicious pasta. Our server was genuine and quick on her feet... nothing extraordinary but she definitely did a great job with the amount of business she had to contend with. The atmosphere was definitely unpretentious but didn't really give any sense of ambiance. That aside, I could see myself becoming a regular to this one of a kind restaurant... a gem!

Thai me up with this place
Submitted Tuesday, September 30, 2008 - 8:01pm [Dine in]

I've just started going to Thai Away Home after a friend introduced me to it. I am simply just amazed at the quality of food at an affordable price that is made as quickly as it is. Both times I've ordered the Cashew Chicken meal and I'm easily stuffed afterwards. The service is great and they do it with a genuine smile. Couldn't ask for more.

Does one jump from this sinking ship?
Submitted Tuesday, September 30, 2008 - 7:56pm [Dine in]

I moved to Vancouver about 5 years ago and Roxy Burger was always raved about for it's awesome burgers and fries. Not to mention the great staff that always seemed happy to make your visit enjoyable.

Over the years however the service, food and ambience has really gotten worse... each year a bit more. The burgers have slipped into complete disarray, lacking both the taste and texture (which now feels like burnt cardboard). We tried the chicken strips last time and I really didn't expect to see 3 puny strips of chicken battered in what looked like coconut shrimp batter. There was barely any chicken at all in these things. I certainly can say they weren't like that a few years ago.

The staff seems to have gotten more apathetic to their customers and more into gossiping and looking haggard as hell from their early morning drinking binges. It seems they hire for an ability to party rather than an ability to wait on customers.

Of course, one goes to the Roxy Burger more often to get drunk to begin with. So why do I feel the need to complain about the beer as well? Well, because they rarely seem to clean their draught lines and the beer ends up tasting like it was filtered through a pile of dirt.

Honestly, I am done with this place... the place I used to consider one of the best burger joints in the city. It's quite sad too. They have so much potential should they ever consider focusing on saving their business.

Food vs Service
Submitted Saturday, March 15, 2008 - 12:19am [Dine in]

The food at Dan Sung Sa is amazing and you get ample amounts of it for a fair price. But, if anything, go for the food and not the service.
I've given this restaurant a good amount of opportunity to provide the barest and fairest of service. They've failed on so many accounts. I had a group of about 15 people tonight and only half of my table received decent service. My half, of course, were completely ignored and had to track down the waiter to order our food after over 30 minutes of being seated. We also had to track down the waiter anytime we wanted another drink or anything else. I was quite disappointed. Again the food was great but, was it really worth it? I'll try my luck at another Korean restaurant next time.
