Better Greek Food Out There
Submitted Sunday, May 18, 2008 - 4:46pm [Dine in]

Went to this place as it was a central location before we headed off for a night of gambling. We had a coupon, so we thought that we'd give it a try. Two of us ordered their lamb special, while the other two ordered a chicken wrap and chicken souvlaki. I guess ordering the "special" meant that you were getting a smaller than usual portion. Because when my roast lamb came, I was wondering "....where's the rest of it?..."

The food was not bad by any means and the service was nice and helpful (although I did hear a crash of water glasses behind us). One of the poor waitresses didn't practice her juggling routine before going out on her shift.

For the $12.95 we paid for the lamb, I would have much rather go to the other Greek restaurant up further on Hastings. But we had a coupon and were in the area, so it was sufficient for the time being. Not too sure I'd be back however.

Nice Vibe
Submitted Sunday, May 18, 2008 - 4:38pm [Dine in]

Went to this place Friday night after work as we had read about their drink specials in the paper. The place was the old Dallas Greek place and they did a nice job renovating the place.

We were greeted right away and sat down by a table close to the balcony. Their drinks all looked and sounded pretty cool, so we each started with a fruity drink ... mine had way too much alcohol in it to finish, so my dinner companion happily finished it for me. We ordered some tortilla chips with a trio of salsas, but I was just wanting some authentic salsa dip (which we didn't get). There was a mango salsa, some green-guacamole type runny salsa and some chopped tomatoes and onion salsa. All there tasty, but like I said, I was craving the authentic mexican salsa. The kind that you get when you are eating at any restaurant in Mexico!

The experience was nice however ... there was a good vibe to the place and our waitress was very nice. She told us that there's usually a line out the door and around the block on week-ends, but because it was a long week-end, they were not as busy (lucky for us!). We shall be back.

Nice dinner
Submitted Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 10:09pm [Dine in]

Came here with a friend for dinner and was seated at a table by the window, overlooking Alberni Street (nice!).

Our server reminded me of a lighter-hair Mr. Bean. He was quite funny and entertaining. Kept on calling all the appetizers `moisturizers`. We saw a bellini on the menu and quickly ordered two, only to be totally disappointed that it didn`t come in a slushy form like the rest of the other restaurants. It came in a champagne flute and basically looked like champagne with grenadine in it. Maybe their brought us the wrong drink. We never even enquired about it.

The food was as much as we had expected - but nothing absolutely WOW came to mind. It was a good meal and the table by the window made it for a nice view to go with dinner.

Go for the sushi alone
Submitted Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 10:05pm [Dine in]

This place is always packed when I walk in (I need to start coming here during the non-peak hours).

My favorites here are the Awesome Roll and their Spicy Tuna Sashimi. Their sashimi pieces are massive! You could just order that alone with a bowl of rice and you`d be stuffed. What really turns me off about this place is the stunned waitresses. They either need to give them all a lesson on proper customer service or get more servers so that they actually serve the customers properly. It`s almost impossible to get a server to fill your water or tea or even flag them down when you are missing a dish (or two).

But, like I said above, you have to come to this place for the sushi alone. Ambiance and service is not in the cards for this place. Thank goodness their food saves them. Maybe I`ll come here during non-peak times and see if it makes a difference in service.

Burgers Etc. BBQ House4091 Hastings St., Burnaby
Yummy in my tummy
Submitted Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 9:55pm [Dine in]

I saw an ad for this place in our local newspaper, the Burnaby Now, about their burger eating contest for charity, so I thought I'd stop in as I live in the neighbourhood. I never knew that they were even there! I guess I never have reason to go west of Gilmore (until now). To my surprise, they've been there for almost 3 years now. The place smelled sooooo yummy when we walked in.

Their name describes it all - Burgers Etc. The "Etc." being their BBQ. While I was deciding what to order, I saw all the different plates of food go out to the other tables and it all looked good. The burgers are humungus! They had all types of meat - brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs, sausage, wings ... I couldn't decide. Apparently, they are best known for their burgers, so I went with that and my 3 friends went with the beef dip, the chicken burger and the brisket sandwich. We also ordered the pulled pork sandwich to round out the taste-testing frenzy.

If you can believe it, there wasn't one clear winner. Everybody had their own favorite (mine being the beef dip - I wish I had ordered one for myself! - next time). We all agreed that the burger and pulled pork were on the top of the list though.

As for others that diss this place and compare it to other BBQ restaurants - stop being such haters. These people make great food, and if they don't make it EXACTLY like the others - good for them - they`re not following the rest. Obviously, they`re doing their own thing and it`s working for them. Keep it up Burgers Etc., I like everything that you serve. We`ll all be back again (and again!)
