Hello again, 1979
Submitted Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 8:55pm [Dine in]

Being a long time resident of Richmond (over 30 years), it's
interesting how the area around St.Edwards Drive is being "born" again. In the 70's, there was a couple of fine dining locations, like Suehiro's near the old hotel. Now that the same hotel has been renovated (a Radisson now I believe) it seems to be a little rejuvenated. My sister recommended this place and I gave it a whirl. The menu is not extensive or special, but the burger I ordered was very good. It just seems like a simple place.

The service was prompt and very friendly. But stepping into
the restaurant was like wow, stepping into my mom's kitchen when I was six. Big lights low to the tables, gaudy wallpaper and
big, velvetly booths that you need a ladder to climb down from.

I think this would be a ok choice for lunch or breakfast.

A good dining experience.

Chose Simba's for my birthday meal. Had the
Cornish Game hen and my wife had the bbq
chicken tenders. Both dishes were very well done
and the mango sauce accompanying it was a nice,
tangy addition to them.
The service was very friendly. She always seemed to
have a smile on her face.
Restaurant is somewhat cramped and it get pretty
loud in there when full. I'd go back...I'd especially
get for takeout.

Went during the big snowfall of 01/29. New West got quite a bit of snow especially on top of the hills. Cafe at bottom of steep hill and cul-de-sac, basically a total sheet of ice and their lot wasn't cleared at all, just about 2 feet of snow. So, I like other patrons, got stuck down there. After trying and failing to get up the hill in the snow, parked and decided to relax and have lunch. Ambience was a little cold and dark and nothing great. Had the BBQ chicken and pineapple burger. It was one of the better burgers I've ever had and reasonably priced. Good fries too. Would recommend this place to anyone. Just wait the snow melts though or go with someone who has a pickup truck!

Decent Thai cuisine...

Had a quiet Monday evening dinner. Basic furnishings, just a regular neighbourhood joint. Had the Pad Thai and Pad Phed and some jasmine rice. Fairly decent in quality and the price was ok for good-sized portions. I've had better Pad Thai elsewhere but in general the food was okay. I'm not sure if I'd return for the same dishes but maybe to try something different next time.

Went for lunch here today. Had the all you can eat special with pop. Quite busy but server was on the ball and was prompt. Fish also came out pretty quickly and hot. Chips were good. Fish was okay, some pieces better cooked than others but otherwise not bad. The restaurant feels like a diner. The carpet wasn't that clean. I guess too busy... Nevertheless a decent lunch that I'd probably partake again in the future.

Better than the other ABC's.

Had the lumberjack breakfast this morning. Quite a bit of food. Quality was decent and service was quite prompt and had a number of coffee refills. So no complaints there. Might be a little too much stuffed toys and the like, especially compared with other ABC's. Felt a little like walking into a toy store. But for the actual dining experience and can't complain. I see they have a 20% off with movie passes within 24 hrs. Can't complain about that...

Went with the wife for a nice lunch to the river. Been wanting to try this place for a while. Friendly host, servers and the chefs shouted a greeting to us when we entered. Nice view of the Fraser, place was just packed and was SRO when we left.
Nice, prompt service by server and drink and first order of food came quite quickly. Rolls were decent as well as the nigiri. More rolls followed on our second order as well as gyoza, deep fried smelt and vegetable tempura. It was all pretty good, nothing standing out in particular, but just very nice for lunch. Overall, a very good dining experience that I'd recommend.

Being a New West resident, I've gone here for a quiet breakfast and lunch a few times. My breakfast on Monday was rather indicative of my past visits. The waffles were good, and ham and eggs...well, I sure hope a restaurant can't butcher that. So, the food is always a plus there. The service is up and down though, it was tough to get a coffee refill this time. I've always likened this place to eating at my Mom's home. The food is decent, but like eating in a library. It can be so quiet in there. Maybe that's because of the general more elderly clientele or what, but I'm like afraid to drop a spoon or raise my voice to get more coffee lest disapproving stares...

Lost a few points because of the flies...

Went here with the wife for a nice Saturday lunch. Had the platter which was decent, however the waiter took our pita away before we were finished! Hasn't happened before to us and we were stunned. The dining room was tidy and attractive but there were lots of flies...Sigh, that can't be a good sign. As I said before, the platter we ordered was relatively decent. A perfect size for the both of us. The lamb and chicken were quite good. If I do go back, its with the Raid and a fly swatter.

Hello? Anyone working?
Submitted Monday, October 1, 2007 - 10:30am [Dine in]

Went with a couple of guys from work for a relaxing meal. Problems started right away. Okay, maybe I need a smaller vehicle but parking's not the greatest there. The restaurant was quite busy so I thought it'd be okay. After sitting down, our server took an extremely long time to take even our drink order. We were sitting near the tv's on the No.3 Road side and seriously I watched almost one half of football before our entrees came.
I had the Jack Daniel's ribs and they were decent and my co-workers had two different types of steaks and while the portions were kind of on the small side, everything tasted okay. I thought possibly the service was slow because of the amount of customers there but then again, we watched three servers have a leisurely chit chat at the front door for 15 minutes...

Don't usually get up to the Commercial Drive area but since I was in the area, I wanted to try this place out. When you walk in, the smell of smoked meat is so overpowering...Got the Feast for the family and left. Pulled pork and ribs very tender and very good. My wife didn't care for the sauce even though I thought it was okay. The corn bread was basically a miss for us, but that's more to our preference than anything actually wrong with the bread. A decent lunch and large portions. Writing this review here in the evening and snacking on some ribs I got earlier actually and there's still some leftovers for lunch tomorrow. A good deal for 30 bucks.

Decent Sunday Buffet
Submitted Monday, September 3, 2007 - 11:36am [Dine in]

Been wanting to try their Sunday buffet a little while now. At 15.95, it's not a bad deal. The schnitzel was the best part of the buffet and the meat patties are reasonably seasoned and tasty. Two kinds of salads available, Greek and Cabbage which were ok. The only thing I didn't really like was that I think I might have chipped a tooth on the roasted potato. It's a pretty small place on Edmonds and parking isn't the best. It got very packed in there on Sunday, so reservations would be a good idea. Service was adequate considering how rushed they were.

Ordered takeout for lunch. Some difficulties ordering over phone but order was correct when I picked it up. Had the Chicken Vindaloo and Lamb Makhani. Much preferred the lamb. Fairly tender and tasty. Overall, a okay lunch. Been there for their inexpensive lunch buffet before and that is very good value for the money...

Submitted Friday, August 24, 2007 - 1:34pm [Dine in]

Raised in Richmond I've been here many times. Just recently went back to have a pizza and a escargot appetizer for lunch and it was still quite good. Sometimes this place is nearly empty and I can't understand why. It's definitely a little gem. I guess the location has a little to do with it. It's on No.5 Road and Cambie in Richmond across from King George Park. It's not exactly the hustle and bustle of No.3 Road. Service was friendly and there was a nice time interval between my appy and pizza...

Submitted Friday, August 24, 2007 - 1:28pm [Dine in]

The wife and I have eaten at several sushi joints in New West and Burnaby and this is actually now our favourite. My wife loves the Alaska and Philadephia rolls there. Perhaps not the most traditional of Japanese cuisine but still the quality of the rolls and nigiri sushi is very good I think. The times I've been there, it seems that the trays are the most popular and this is what I usually order too. Living in the New West area, it's a great platter to take home and not that expensive. It's pretty small inside and around the corner from the liquor store. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

A bit of a odd place for a restaurant. Couldn't find a parking spot when I first arrived. Pretty good sign. Circled the block and returned. Ambiance certainly wasn't anything special. It felt a little like eating in a renovated warehouse, a little cavernous. The food was very good though. I ordered the Kalamari for a main. It was a decent portion with well done sides (salad, roasted potato, etc). On the strength of the cuisine, I'll probably be back.
