I was a big fan of Taka Sushi prior to the change of ownership / format to Yuji's. My wife and I (purely by chance) attended the grand opening of Yuji's and were sceptical that our second favourite sushi joint was going to change for the worst. However, we were pleasantly surprised that not only was there more interesting variety of dishes available, the service had improved (in terms of speed) over Taka. Yuji's is now our favourite sushi restaurant and the place we take friends.
Although my wife and I are not weekly regulars, we are recognized every time we go now. We order a few of our favourites each time and experiment with at least one new dish on each visit - some of the new dishes get added to the favourite list, some don't but all the dishes we have tried are interesting. The prices are another interesting thing... it really depends on what you order. We have eaten for $30 and been stuffed and we have also run the bill to $50 when we were in the mood for more exotic dishes.
I have taken several guests (business and personal) to Yuji's and most have asked to return on subsequent visits.
The ambiance has not changed substantially from Taka but I like it, as it is a minimalist style. The service is friendly if somewhat shy.

Dashed Expectations - Does Vancouver have any decent Mexican Restaurants?

A disappointing experience. My wife and I lived in San Antonio for several years and I am admittedly more familiar with tex-mex than authentic Mexican, however, I believe that I took an objective look at Zocalo. The menu is limited and focus is seemingly placed on appies rather than on entrees (6). I tried the Chicken Mole skewers (reasonably good but not the best Mole I have ever had), the Caesar salad (on the recommendation of another reviewer) which was OK and the Pork dish (again on the recommendation of another review) which was not to my liking (rather tasteless - low on spice, stronger on orange zest).
The service was cold, bordering on unfriendly, nothing hostile, it just seemed like the servers didn't really like people.
I was also disappointed with the Tequila presentation. I ordered a Patron Anejo which was poured at the table into a (very small) shot glass (weird since it is supposed to be a sipping Tequila).
We didn't try any of the desserts, as we were really ready to leave at the end of our entrees.
