Cafe Classico4263 East Hastings Street, Burnaby
new menu items/spic please.
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 2:14pm [Dine in]

How about some different menu items,some use of spices and what about a few select pasta dishes for long time customers ?

Bland foods are now a thing of the past and we all need to experiment with the new cuisine in Canada. Variety will enliven your life and give you a fresh burst to fill those empty seats each night at Classico.

A modest return to good quality classical music would also enhance the ambiance inside and out on the patio eh ? Where is Bruno ?

Why so few male staff ?
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 2:06pm [Dine in]

I often wonder why there are so few male staff [young or mature] Surely males warrent the opportunity to have a good job and to at least have equal numbers in this establishment.

Service is always perfect, attentive and food variety and selection interesting here. Decor is just right, a colourful mix of slightly upbeat colours/style etc.
Hope the Jambalaya soon returns as it was/is a favourite in this household.

Larger portions,welcome.
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 2:02pm [Dine in]

Would love to see huge lineups like ANTONS and larger Lamb portions like Knight & Day [much as you can eat]. Every interior table full to capacity,happy contented patrons in this old Greek family run establishment on Hastings 4600 block !

Have ordered dozens of Pizza dishes over the past 30 years and probably more in the future.WOW the money I have ploughed into Romana for food, must be a fortune !

Prices up,food better now,profits ?
Submitted Tuesday, March 4, 2008 - 1:16pm [Dine in]

It seems the chef has been changed for the better.Quality selection,but grossly overpriced & sort of stingy with portions.Very upscale decor,parking OK and the service needs some professional mature staff to be more attentive to customers, suggesting specials and ensuring prompt acceptable service.The youth working there need solid grounding,but possibly there are no medical/dental benefits and low wages. Hours of operation are totally wierd,best to phone ahead to see if Nathans is actually OPEN ! Burnaby city employees seem to frequent the place and a full house does happen,some times. Fresh coffee refills and soft background "music" needed ,yesterday.

Service ? infrequent,sometimes good.
Submitted Tuesday, March 4, 2008 - 1:03pm [Dine in]

Food here is perfect,the selection wonderful.Staff always changing,always young,and menu awareness [ie ingredients] usually unknown by the youthful servers.Staff are always agreeable, but lacking a professional attention to detail and never suggest options/desserts etc. Owner Ron is a muscle bound male who knows his job in toto.He is a consumate professional restauranteur,young, but aware to sensitivities and cultural needs. This place has the potential to be honestly great in time, a destination location for certain.
Lighting, a bit dull for reading the menu,and sound system needs a bit of adjustment,ie bass and resonance. I will continue to love the food & return often.

No reservations after 6pm ? Stupid policy.
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 7:59pm [Dine in]

Have dined there before, service was all right, but not startling or dedicated. I think management needs to smarten up,quickly clean up dirty tables and remove used dishes as the patons meals progress.Long lineups show mismanagement of the facility,poor timing & kitchen co ordination.

Having been in catering for almost 40 years,it seems some basic corrective changes need be effected and observations at better class restaurants need be implimented at Cameron St Anduccis.

Good quality and variety,quantity selection;
Submitted Friday, November 10, 2006 - 1:43pm [Dine in]

Having lived nearby for 28 years, I trust the place for fair prices,quality and reasonable quantity. Managers and staff are agreeable,know their menu,ingredients and most of all a large number of their patrons,by name. Repeat customers from M.G.M. and "Stargate "movies says good food ![mature ambience also]
Portions are generous,service is superior,and groups are easily taken care of all day. I recommend the nightly SPECIALS for all the right reasons.[I come from the catering industry,40 yrs].

Tastless frozen foods here; lineups also;
Submitted Friday, November 10, 2006 - 1:35pm [Dine in]

Brentwood IHOP is not known for gourmand tasty food.No imagination with their presentations,variety or spicy eats. Bland is the word here.Frozen re heated dishes just fail. The Sunday rush from local venues fills the place with seniors,a line up ensues.

Why are there so few mature males/females employed here ? This menu is so American and lacks any imigination or personal care by the cooks and senior staff aka management.

Service and clean surroundings;
Submitted Tuesday, September 26, 2006 - 2:57pm [Dine in]

This restaurant is one favoured by so many regulars,including our motorcycle group of men. The "Eggs Benny"are wonderful,the Hollandaise sauce is perfect.
The attentive staff are to dream of in the catering business.Fresh coffee and well prepared meals at all hours. Packed all day and every day...they are doing what patrons expect.Love the place,as it is genuinely well run and pleasant management.

Many comrades of mine travel from south Burnaby and west Point Grey for this type of establishment,and great food.

Used to be quiet and relaxing,not so now;
Submitted Monday, July 24, 2006 - 4:42pm [Dine in]

Food variety is super,
Quantity excessive, but tolerable free advertising.
[too many fat,obese patrons waddling out the door each night]

Service is reasonable during the day times, but slower at night,with lengthy line ups always inching their way into the establishment.Why not place a full[enlarged print] menu on the window,so patrons waiting to enter can decide what they want before getting an actual table ? [speed up serving time...obviously eh]

The so called music is trash,absolute childlike garbage,compared to when Antons was smaller [up the street]. Invest in a quality sound system and some classical Italian cd's,to enhance the atmosphere of a real Italian restaurant. Play down the kids stuff,encourage a mature clientile, but a balanced one.
No one likes the excessive volume offered currently. Noise attenuation needs urgent attention by the so called manager.Hellooo.do you wear earplugs ?........well....

Has great potential,but tip comment a negative impact;
Submitted Monday, July 24, 2006 - 4:31pm [Dine in]

ABC on Hastings St at Kensington mall has the location and almost a captive audience/customer basis.
Food is a moderate variety,little variety,no spicing,and imagination overall.
It could be anywhere in Canada,or the world.but I think it could have a "Chefs special" each day to burst that image very effectively.

The hiring of female servers brings into question as to why no males or older females are hired by this restaurant ? Have you pondered this ?[sexual & age discrimination ?]
Why do the youthful female servers continue to ask "Do you want the change "....? This hits a negative chord with me. I maintain it is my choice to tip or not, depending if I was given exceptionally good service and some suitable adjectives used, eg "would you like some freshly brewed coffee" ?
I have been in the catering industry for over 35 years and I know when not to tip. This applies where anyone who literally demands the change[to the patron] be left as a gratuity.....in total.

Parking/exterior really wanting;
Submitted Monday, June 26, 2006 - 10:27am [Dine in]

Enjoyed the food and flavours were great. Selection very innovative.

Parking lot needs lighting and a full clean up urgently. [very down run and dirty]

Burnaby needs higher class resturants and the appropriate entrance atmosphere ,but this place lacks class and attention to fine exterior detail,sad to report. I live in the immediate neighbourhood.

Noisy,excellent food, and pricey..jocks also...
Submitted Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 1:22pm [Dine in]

I am constantly amazed as to why you only hire very young females.

We come for the food selections and great service.would prefer a better mix of both sexes and some mature types also. Teeny boppers try but are wet behind the ears in knowing what goes into what with your food offerings.
The wine list etc really needs some attention to detail and superior selections for the mature taste. Maybe, do some study on imported quality wines [white and reds] [sweet and dry].
Bring back the famed Jambaliah which was the perfect meal for anyone.Your preparation was the best outside the New Orleans area.

Hope "Food Safe" tickets are encouraged amongst staff as food safety in handling is important in this industry.

Salads comprise of more than lettuce...
Submitted Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

Took a travelling nephew to the cafe and our orders were salads. I hope that the cooks learn that salads have other vegetables in them and a larger amount of Chicken etc on customers plates would ensure we would come back.[Canadians like larger portions]
Cutting costs and corners does increase your profit margins I realise, but [in the trade we call them fillers] quickly shows customers you are not giving good value for our dollars. I encourage you to think twice about patronising Nandos in metrotown as too much "FILLER" is used on every plate I saw from this location. Sad really.

Submitted Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 12:49pm [Dine in]

This little place is tucked away off Hastings St in North Burnaby.I have always had good food and company in this location. portions are great, service is courteous and staff are always attentive to the needs of their customers. Fresh coffee and pleasant attitudes prevail,always.

Prices are reasonable. Outdoor patio is always popular during the summer months.Children are welcome,but sometimes noisy.

yes, this is a favourite place and it is small and sort of special.

Service and attitude really wanting.
Submitted Thursday, June 15, 2006 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

Took some out of town guests to have a meal and was sadly disappointed at the waiting for service at all points during the visit.

Managers attitude was negative and seemingly uninterested in improving numbers of staff to serve seated customers,[maybe they are cutting corners to ensure large profit margins ?]
Food was passable,but I will still go across the street to Knight and Day, better atmosphere and menu,overall.
Now, if you go to the Kinsington Mall ABC it is a world of difference,by far.
PS I do not like servers asking "Do you want the change"? meaning they want you to give them all the money owing as a substancial tip..not a way to encourage us to return eh ?

Never actually seen anyone eating here
Submitted Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 6:10pm [Dine in]

This place facinates me as I do not know how they manage to pay the rent.[staff, hydro]
I have never seen anyone eating in this cafe nor heard of anyone taking out or delivery of their food.
The exterior needs some care and a good clean up of the "garden" and windows etc. Rear parking is poorly lit and unwelcoming to be modest,and unkempt with weeds and a fresh coat of paint urgently needed.
Maybe, new ownership would reinvigorate the site ?

Cristos Greek Taverna4624 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Greek food,was better in the past.
Submitted Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 6:04pm [Dine in]

Living near this restaurant and smelling it's fumes is not quite a turn on. Wish their dumpster odour was not so awful.
Their menu is typically Greek and not exotic by any means.Deep fry is not exactly healthy for todays consumer.
I found the previous owner offered entertainement and [in my humble opinion] better quality/tasting food.
Groups are kept waiting in the front area, and there seems to be a lack of communication and good management skills amongst staff in table delivery of meals in a timely fashion.
