excellent congee
Submitted Sunday, March 15, 2009 - 7:04pm [Dine in]

We've been here for lunch a couple times and have tried the tomato beef chow meain and beef black bean sauce chowmein. The chicken congee is consistenly very thick (not watery) and has a nice flavour and they added a generous amount of fresh chicken to each bowl. The chow mein noodles themselves have quite a crunchy texture and the sauces are good. The decor looks like it hasn't changed for years, with really older style tablecloths but we went for the food, not for the atmosphere. We had our tea constantly refilled by this young fellow. Overall, it was a decent experience and the price was good. We will return...

didn't like the noodles
Submitted Sunday, March 8, 2009 - 11:35am [Dine in]

We regular frequent the Coquitlam and Chinatown Hon's but decided to drop by the New West one yesterday for lunch as the food was decent years ago. Their potstickers were good but there wasn't any of the little flakes of ginger in the sauce like everywhere else. We ordered House chow mein, hardly any meat or fish, and missing the scallops, the green beans were tasteless , the deep fried noodles (not panfried) were terribly, similar to the "Farkay" brand they have at superstore. Maybe they save time that way by prefrying the noodles. Go to the Coquitlam one, it is MUCH better in terms of quality, taste and they give you more quanity of topping for your money !

sausages weren't that good
Submitted Sunday, December 28, 2008 - 11:37am [Dine in]

We went for a late breakfast yesterday since we hadn't gone for awhile. Had pancakes, eggs, sausages. The pancakes & coffee was okay but the sausages didn't taste that fresh this time like they usually are. They were crispy on the outside but didn't taste like their usual flavour, they had a strange, stale flavour on the inside..

nothing special
Submitted Saturday, December 20, 2008 - 8:20pm [Dine in]

We came here for dim sum around noon today and was seated almost immediately. We enjoyed the deep fried shrimp/chive dumpling, steamed shrimp dumblings, the steamed baby beef ribs weren't bad but the filling in the crispy egg roll was pretty bland, there was just a bunch of chopped celery. The deepfried taro with pork filling was kind of cold. The shrimp rice roll with soy sauce wasn't as tasty compared to other dim sum restaurants, the sauce wasn't dark and sweet enough. The steamed pork sieu miu was really bad, dry and shrivelled up, like it had been sitting around for awhile, not plump looking, juicy or hot enough.
The men's washroom was really cold, you could see your breath in the air. It was our first time at this restaurant so not sure if we would come back...

awful beef congee
Submitted Sunday, November 30, 2008 - 6:06pm [Dine in]

Went for lunch here. I had the regular bowl of beef congee, it was very watered down, not thick like it should be, and had absolutely no flavour at all. Usually there is a ginger flavour or a nice rice flavor but not today. The beef tasted like pieces of rubber, no beef flavor like it was boiled for hours or something.. I've had the congee twice a long time ago and it was ok, but today it was really horrible.

good potato pancakes
Submitted Monday, September 15, 2008 - 6:38pm [Dine in]

We went here for breakfast Saturday. The sausages are thick and quite tasty, the potato pancakes were very crispy and delicious. Would recommend the breakfast special here. We kept waiting at the door for a server but no one appeared for a long time so we had to walk all the way in before we spotted a server..

good service but very overpriced
Submitted Sunday, September 7, 2008 - 9:13pm [Dine in]

At $43 per person they have Sunday brunch from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The server was very efficient but found the brunch somewhat sparse. There were cold prawns in the shell, crab legs, mussels, steak, fish, different types of smoked salmon, chicken sausages (they don't have pork sausages anymore), bacon, eggs benedict, waffles, roasted peppers, mini croissant & danish, buns, cold salads and fruit plates, a roast pork which was kind of dry (they alternate roast beef and lamb each week), dessert consisted of squares, tarts, mini cakes and ladyfingers and a chocolate fountain. For the price, I expected there to be a bigger selection of hot food but was disappointed as it was mainly cold food. You get a great view but value is definitely lacking here. Can't recommend...

good dim sum
Submitted Monday, September 1, 2008 - 11:34am [Dine in]

We went for the first time here on Saturday. Regular dim sum is $2.95 per plate. The siu mie were huge and piping hot. The steamed beef ribs were nice. Ha gow was okay. Good beef shrimp roll. Wish the taro balls were a bit warmer but they were of a good size. The deep fried sweet rice pork balls didn't have much filling and weren't warm.. Otherwise, there was a lot of variety and the carts kept coming.. Would return again..

excellent fish n chips
Submitted Monday, August 4, 2008 - 9:32pm [Dine in]

We've been here a few times for lunch and its worth the wait. The pieces of fish are extra large and they have the best chips. The chips just melt in your mouth and have a slightly waxy texture. The fish always tastes fresh and moist, not dry or hard. Unless your a big eater, 1 piece of fish is more than enough...

tasty steak sandwich
Submitted Monday, August 4, 2008 - 9:23pm [Dine in]

We went for lunch on a Satuday. We got seated very quickly. The steak sandwich on top of the garlic bread was very good, got a few onion rings along with the fries too. The food came fairly quickly, the server was also very pleasant. The booths were fairly comfortable. I would come back for lunch again..

average dim sum
Submitted Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 10:58pm [Dine in]

We tried the dim sum for the first time, only had to wait a few minutes. $3.25 for small $3.75 for large plates of dim sum. 10 percent off if you go early. We had the shrimp & pork dumplings, they weren't outstanding.. 4 pork/rice balls came in a plate, usually you get 3, maybe they were smaller... enjoyed the shrimp rice roll the best, sauce was tasty.. pricier than the other restaurants we frequent...

too much rice
Submitted Monday, July 14, 2008 - 7:58am [Dine in]

We went for lunch here for the first time and ordered chicken souvlaki and the calamari dinner. Found the calamari somewhat tough and chewy, not tender enough, possibly overcooked. The chicken was a bit dry too. It looked like a huge serving as the squid was piled high on a bed of rice but in reality it was just an average serving of squid. It had nice tables and the service was pretty good though. Maybe will try something else the next time..

tasteless sauce
Submitted Sunday, July 6, 2008 - 10:29am [Dine in]

Had spaghetti with meatballs, there were only a few meatballs, the pasta was overcooked and the sauce was lacking in flavour, watery and not tangy or flavorful enough.. the bread was okay..If your looking for a cheap lunch, includes ice cream, this is it, but if your looking for flavourful pasta/sauce go elsewhere..

poor service
Submitted Tuesday, July 1, 2008 - 9:46pm [Dine in]

We both ordered the all you can eat. After we got the drinks, the waitress came back with only 1 plate of fish n chips. The waitress said she'd get my plate soon.. I waited over 10 minutes for it. Then my partner said he'd have 3 more fish. He waited a long time for it. Then she asked me if I wanted more, I said 1 more fish with chips, she came back with 2 fish and forgot about the chips. Although it was busy, maybe it would help if she wrote down the orders...

good variety of dimsum
Submitted Saturday, March 29, 2008 - 9:37pm [Dine in]

we arrived around noon Saturday and got a table near the middle of the restaurant. The dim sum arrived quickly. We had deepfried spicy squid which was quite tasty, shrimp dumplings, shrimp riceroll, seafood siu mie, scallop and shrimp dumpling, sticky rice.. the carts kept coming one after another.. we were too stuffed to get the spring rolls and the sweet rice/pork balls which looked good. Wanted some beef ribs but the server said they don't make that anymore.

cold beef/chicken & not crispy tempura
Submitted Saturday, March 22, 2008 - 6:16pm [Dine in]

Had dinner there on Friday Mar. 21st. Found teriyaki beef in Box A was just barely warm, chicken in Box B was the same. The tempura in both boxes was soggy and just lukewarm. It seemed that the food had been cooked/heated up ahead of time and then kept warm for a while before serving it. It didn't seem like it was cooked to order like it should have been. The beef was more like boiled beef in texture instead of quick fried. The quality of your successful restaurant should not be compromised with shortcuts in the kitchen.
