slow service..expect to wait a long time for your food
Submitted Monday, April 25, 2011 - 8:20pm [Dine in]

We went here twice now, both times for lunch. Had a chow mein dish that took forever to arrive and it was ok, not outstanding. Also ordered a plate of shrimp rice roll which which took a long time but arrived kind of lukewarm to cold. (Better to have dim sum at a real dim sum restaurant). Had the sliced beef congee and that took a long time too. The congee was runny (not thick) and the flavour was just ok. We wanted to sit beside each other and the so called "boss lady" would not agree at first. There were tables for 2 and 4 available so finally we were allowed to sit at a table for 4. If you want expect quick service like Hon's, don't come here.

didn't like the gravy on the prime rib
Submitted Sunday, February 27, 2011 - 7:05pm [Dine in]

We had dinner here last night and ordered the $9.99 prime rib. Came with a 10 oz piece of prime rib, those mixed vegies (corn/carrots), one of those bun and a baked potato or fries, etc.. The fries tasted home made and the potato was nicely presented. I didn't like the gravy as found it too thick and salty, I prefer the thinner au jus instead.. We had the meat medium, but we found it a bit overcooked.. Its good value for $9.99 but it doesn't compare to the quality of the Keg prime rib ... the waitress was friendly and helpful though.. we might return and try a different dinner another night..

day old chicken
Submitted Sunday, February 27, 2011 - 6:57pm [Dine in]

We have been to Hon's for many years but have lately come less often due to the decline in the quality of the food. We ordered some black bean sauce chicken chow mein. I bit into a piece of chicken and noticed immediately it was not freshly cooked, but tasted stale, or sitting around for some time or leftover chicken from the day before. You can tell the chicken is freshly fried if its juicy but this looked totally white, was dry and had a bad taste to it. We immediately advised the server and told her the chicken tasted awful and we wanted beef chow mein instead. She said it would only be a few minutes so we waited and then they brought in another batch of chow mein with the beef. It was a definite improvement but the noodles were dry and the beef wasn't flavored that well but it was okay.. We will probably not be returning for a long time..

Excellent and friendly service throughout the evening
Submitted Tuesday, February 22, 2011 - 8:16am [Dine in]

We arrived on a Sunday night around 7:30 pm and was quickly greeted and seated in a nice comfortable corner booth. Warm bread and tasty breadsticks arrived right away. I ordered one main and my partner had the 4 course dinner. I had the seafood fettuccine, it didn't take long to arrive but I found the pasta a little on the colder side, it didn't seem like it was prepared on the spot. There were some baby scallops in a tomato/red pepper sauce, it was okay but not great. My partner had the prawn appetizer which came with 2 large prawns. He also had the braised beef spaghetti which was very tasty in a great red wine sauce. Then came the flat iron steak which was amazing, it had a really good texture and was delicious (that was our favourite dish). Then he had the flourless chocolate banana cake which was beautifully presented on top of ice cream and pineapple.
2 musicians played throughout during dinner, they were quite good and the music was relaxing. Around 9:15 pm, Frederico appeared and sang a few favourite love songs, but mostly ballroom songs later. He had a great presence and an amazing voice. There was an older crowd but thats how it is on Sunday nights, most of them were practicing their ballroom dance moves. I wasn't really into the food as much but really enjoyed the live entertainment, especially Frederico. If you love this type of cuisine, great service and dancing this is the place to go.. For dinner, coffee, and 3 drinks the bill came to around $124.00.

tasty chow mein and congee
Submitted Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - 7:54am [Dine in]

We have only been here a couple times but enjoyed each visit. We have tried the chicken congee with chinese mushroom, black bean sauce with green pepper and beef chow mein, the chicken chow mein which came with chinese mushrooms and shanghai bok choy and the crispy noodles were fried perfectly, and the congee was very thick, (not runny) the way it should be with a great aroma. The decor is not bad and the place seems fairly clean. The washrooms were fairly clean too. This restaurant is located in the Lansdowne Mall in Richmond and its fairly busy and we didn't have to wait too long to be seated. We will definitely be returning as its a convenient location with lots of parking.

pricey xmas dinner
Submitted Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - 7:44am [Dine in]

We had a reservation and got seaten beside the hostess area, not too far away from the entrance. I asked for my steak " medium", it came with 3 spears of asparagus, some squash, and beets. Instead of garlic mashed potatoes, I asked for fries, the fries were good and came in a bowl. It was a thick piece of meat, of average size, but think it was slightly overcooked and it was a bit dry. My partner had the same meal but he ordered it "well done" which was a mistake, as it came out super dry. The prices were high for the amount of food you get.

pricey cupcakes
Submitted Monday, January 10, 2011 - 9:39am [Take-out]

We bought a couple cupcakes to take home. The selection was minimal compared to a couple years ago. There was not a large selecton to choose from so we got mocha and mint icing on chocolate cake. The icing was quite sweet and the cake tasted like it was made from a cake mix.. I guess they pay a lot in rent so have to charge a lot for their goods.. Its ok once in awhile...

sweet n sour pork FAT
Submitted Tuesday, December 28, 2010 - 11:02am [Delivery]

We decided to have some food delivered, decided on chicken chow mein, congee, and sweet n sour pork. The congee was a bit runny, the chow mein didn't have enough gravy so was quite dry, and the sweet n sour pork was basically sweet n sour pork FAT ! When you eat in, its deep fried perfectly & very flavourful with a good portion of meat but when the delivery guy came and we opened the container up, we did not see any meat attached to the white pork bones, just solid chunks of pork fat.. maybe they know you can't complain about the food once its delivered? It was really disappointing so we won't get delivery again.

the roast lamb didn't look too appetizing
Submitted Saturday, December 4, 2010 - 11:46pm [Dine in]

We had an early dinner tonight. Came in and seated ourselves, the place was freezing. Nothing fancy, just your average restaurant. The lasagna $9.95 which came with garlic toast, was okay. The roast lamb $13.95 came with potatos, greek salad, rice, pita bread. The side dishes were pretty bland. The lamb didn't taste like it was just cooked but tasted like it had been sitting around for awhile. Maybe the lamb chops would have been a better choice? Doesn't matter, as we probably won't be returning.

cheap lunch meals but slow service
Submitted Monday, April 26, 2010 - 6:45pm [Dine in]

We were seated at a booth at the back. It took an awfully long time before someone finally took our order. We ordered a lunch special of fried beef noodle and a chicken vegetable chow mein dish. Seemed to wait about 15 - 20 minutes before the food arrived. The food was pretty good for the price so we will return.

really slow service
Submitted Tuesday, February 23, 2010 - 7:44am [Dine in]

we were seated around 12:30 pm on Sunday after waiting by the door for several minutes. Had to sit at the back of the restaurant as the main area was fairly full. Waited 10 - 15 mins without service as the servers just kept walking by without giving us any eye contact. Finally I had to flag someone down to take our order. They don't have carts here but you fill in a list of what you want. The steamed beef ribs, shrimp dumplings, pork siu miu were pretty good but the steamed radish cake and deep fried pork ball weren't as good as some other dim sum places. There are other closeby restaurants that provide better/faster service and food..

excellent "dinner for 2"
Submitted Sunday, February 14, 2010 - 1:56pm [Dine in]

We came here last night and the place was packed around 6:00 pm. We had one of the set dinners for two which consisted of 2 deep fried prawn/scallop egg rolls, 6 prawn wontons in broth, chicken chow mein, beef chop suey and sweet n sour pork with pineapple. The food came fairly quickly and all the dishers were very tasty. It was good value for the money.

We came here for the first time for dinner. We had chicken souvlaki and lamb chops. We were seated pretty quickly. (The chicken skewer was huge (8 oz)(dinner special $12.99) and covered the whole plate. There were 5 lamb chops and they were pretty tasty too. ($15.99) All dinners include tons of rice, potato, salad, bread. The presentation was good. Our server was very friendly and helpful, we didn't have to ask to get our water refilled. Next time we want to try the calamari, roast lamb and beef souvlaki!

Submitted Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 11:08am [Dine in]

We had lunch here yesterday. Seemed like a long wait to be seated & people were coming in. Got seated at one of their many booths and the atmosphere was nice, felt like a sports bar.. We split a small hawaiian pizza and yam fries, it came to around $22 which I thought a bit pricey. The pizza came out hot and delicious with a great crust but thought the portion of fries could have been larger for the price..

We had lunch here on the weekend . It came on nice looking plates and lots of french fries, maybe the fries were a bit overcooked as we prefer fries when they are still crunchy but not overcooked. The batter was quite crunchy and the fish tasted quite fresh. Enjoyed the water which came with a slice of lemon.

I had the fish n chips for lunch. It came with a generous serving of firies and 3 good sized pieces of cod but the batter had a pale color and very tender tempura-like batter. The fish was very fresh but I prefer a heavier batter to go with the fish. My partner had the roast beef which was good too. The pop came in cans. Will have to try the breakfasts next time as the sausages looked quite plump.

We went for dinner Saturday night and were seated at a large booth. We ordered the pork side ribs and back ribs, regular size. The back ribs were very meaty and a good size. The side ribs were fattier, chewier and tasty too. You pick one side dish, we had baked potato and fries. The included cornbread was way too sweet, sticky and dense, we prefer the lighter version in cornbread. Our server was quite friendly and the atmosphere was good. We will return..

We came here again for another eggs benny and fish n chips. The coffee is pretty good and the refills are free. You get a lot of fries and they were very crispy and tasted really fresh, not greasy. I got 3 smaller pieces of fish and they were perfectly deep fried to a golden brown. Unfortunately the fish didn't taste the freshest, a bit dry or could be frozen? but overall it was a huge portion..

incredibly small pieces of fish
Submitted Sunday, March 22, 2009 - 7:25pm [Dine in]

We shared a 2 piece fish n chips for an afternoon snack. The 2 pieces of fish were the smallest we've ever seen. I think it was $14.50 for a couple of 4" x 1" pieces of fish. It came with a small serving of fries. Be prepared to pay for the view, not the food. Its basically for tourists who don't mind paying the high prices.
