don't get the steak sandwich
Submitted Sunday, March 22, 2015 - 12:02am [Dine in]

the steak sandwich was not good. very tough and dry cut of meat.it was on top of something which looked like a hotdog bun. maybe try one of the appetizers instead. the server was nice though. only went here once so maybe the next time will be better? The atmosphere was ok.

wontons & frozen siu mie gone downhill
Submitted Thursday, January 30, 2014 - 8:07am [Dine in]

Hon's used to serve really good quality wontons that were large, really good texture, good flavour... recently we had won ton soup and they were really awful. Not horrible but what a difference from last year.. they were mushy and did not even look like hon's wontons that have been served before.. even the broth is so watered down now.. the wontons used to be a bit chewy in texture with a great shrimp flavour, now they are totally bland and soft. Also purchased a frozen pack of hon's siu mie (pork dumplings) to see how the flavour was and after they were not good but dry and lacked any flavour.. if this is your signature dish, please try to make some improvements...

very loud atmosphere but decent ribs
Submitted Tuesday, September 17, 2013 - 6:51am [Dine in]

We arrived on a Saturday night around 6:15 pm and was seated within a few minutes in a corner booth with a window view as had reservations. Ordered the back pork ribs, regular and large size ($21 & $27) They arrived in a fairly short time, good size portions, very meaty but a few of the ribs I found a bit dry, as I prefer fattier ribs so maybe next time will order the pork side ribs instead. We picked yam fries, coleslaw, baked potato, corn for the sides. The potato had great texture but was a bit cold. The cornbread did not taste that fresh and a bit dry. One thing that was kind of annoying was that every few minutes or so the staff would put a large moosehead on the birthday person's head and sing their song which was like a birthday chant or something.. it seemed to go on all night. Don't think its that hygienic as well. We could hear screaming kids at the other end as well but if you don't mind people shouting all night and a loud atmosphere you will have a good time.

bowl of chicken and beef bun very dry
Submitted Tuesday, July 31, 2012 - 5:56pm [Dine in]

Found the chicken and beef on top of the bowl of Bun, noodle very dry. Unless you like dried out white chicken breast meat and dry beef / beef jerky which tasted like it had been precooked and sitting around for awhile, I suggest you order something else on the menu. I have had this dish before but today it was really awful and the meat not fresh and over cooked.. don't think I will be coming here in the near future.

large pieces of fish
Submitted Tuesday, March 27, 2012 - 6:55am [Dine in]

We came here on a Sunday and the place was packed. Also lots of people at the take-out counter too. We had the 2 piece cod fish & chips, the pieces of fish are still large and very fresh. They were busy so they forgot to give us some menus after we sat down but otherwise service is decent. I also like the heavier crunchier batter some other places serve but this batter was crisp, light and not too heavy so you could really taste the fish. The home cut fries look not as darkly fried as before but still tasted good, maybe a couple more minutes in the fryer and they would have been perfect.

one of the items tasted like spam
Submitted Monday, February 27, 2012 - 7:38am [Dine in]

we went here for the first time on the weekend, it was crowded but got a table within minutes. We ordered 4 dishes including siu mie (steamed pork dumplings) they looked good, texture ok but when we bit into them the flavour was very simiilar to SPAM, I don't mind fried spam or the occasional fried spam sandwich but not with dim sum. We both thought they mixed the pork mixture with spam or maybe they put some ingredient into it that tasted like spam? We also had the steamed prawn roll up (lots of shrimp and delicious) steamed spareribs (a good sized portion), prawn toast (which was covered with sesame seeds, we weren't crazy with that dish) Cost was average. maybe we'll try some other dishes next time and see if the siu mie tastes different the next time, if it doesn't we won't be returning....

the food used to be a lot better
Submitted Saturday, February 18, 2012 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

We came here for dinner recently and ordered sweet n sour pork, chinese brocolli and beef. The beef did not taste good as was under seasoned and looked soft and pale, not fried. The other dish tasted like sweet n sour pork stew as there wasn't enough of a crispy batter and the pork didn't have enough fat in it, too lean. We have been here a few years ago and the food was a lot better than it was now so we will not be returning..

don't take the awful table for 2 in the back
Submitted Monday, February 13, 2012 - 10:21am [Dine in]

we had dim sum this weekend and were seated in the other room where there was a small table right by the washrooms. It was busy so we didn't mind at first. But after a few minutes the waitress was loading and unloading spoons, bowls, plates, utensils which made a huge racket if you are seated right beside/in front of her station. So every few minutes or so you could hear this clankering sound of everything being sorted and taken from here to there and there to here to prepare new tables.. I could handle it at first but when its every 3 minutes and super loud since she was handling all the spoons, bowls literally 2 inches behind you, it was hard on the ears and very distracting to enjoy a decent lunch. I wonder why management would even consider putting a table so close to that station? Probably to make a bit more money?

you must try the Shanghai pork chops !
Submitted Monday, October 31, 2011 - 4:40pm [Dine in]

We ordered these for the first time on the weekend and they were amazing ! Perfectly deep fried to a crisp, very tender and well seasoned pork chops. It would have been perfect if there was some kind of a dipping sauce but they were still good without any sauce. We had an order of seafood chow mein which was not that impressive and overly salty but the pork chops made up for that. There was a lot of pork chops in the plate and we couldn't stop eating them, next time we will get them again for sure ..

small portions for lunch
Submitted Sunday, July 17, 2011 - 9:44am [Dine in]

We had the chicken teriyaki box and the beef teriyaki box, they came with california roll and sushi, and tempura. First of all the gravy on top of the chicken and beef was way too thick and tasted like gravy made from a package, did not taste Japanese at all but really westernized tasting gravy, something you would find on top of a salsbury steak or something. Definitely not a teriyaki sauce ! the amount of beef and chicken was extremely small compared to other Japanese restaurants. Miso soup was not included. The tuna was NOT fresh and fell apart after one small bite. The salmon, shrimp was ok. Sushi sizes are small and the fish was sliced quite thin. We will not be returning.

satisfying meal
Submitted Saturday, July 9, 2011 - 10:29pm [Dine in]

we came here for a late dinner and seated ourselves. The service was fast and the waitress was quite friendly. We both had the all you can eat cod fish n chip dinner. There was about 5 pieces of fish with lots of fries. The fries were good and the fish was very fresh. After eating that we had another 2 more pieces of fish then couldn't eat anymore. The only thing we didn't like was having to ask for lemon. They brought us about 4 lemon SLICES, not wedges. We thought that was a bit odd. We will still return as the fish was very fresh, not dry or overcooked.

where was the beef?
Submitted Sunday, September 19, 2010 - 7:42pm [Dine in]

We had dinner here for the first time last night. Ordered beef short ribs $15 and potato noodle with beef $14.
You cook the ribs yourself, it came with 2 raw mushrooms. We spotted about 2 pieces of very thinly sliced beef and the rest was vegetables in the noodle dish. It was a huge plate but we prefer chinese noodles which are usually made from egg, rice or wheat. These kind of noodles just tasted like a thicker chinese vermicelli, kind of bland. We had just assumed it was an actual noodle. Saw a lot of young Korean students eating. Not likely to return.
