Solid Sushi
Submitted Wednesday, June 9, 2010 - 11:43pm [Dine in]

I was introduced to this place while on a recent visit and am happy to say I was pretty pleased with the experience!

We'd made a reservation for a party of 8 or so people for the late-night menu at 9:30 on a busy Friday. Thank goodness we made that reservation because this place was packed! We waited about fifteen minutes or so before being seated, which wasn't bad considering how busy they were.

My friends with me there told me that with a party our size order more than what we wanted, because the servers won't always bring back the amount you request. This turned out to be true, but it wasn't an issue for us since we could just put out another order. For being a full house that night our waitress did a good job with checking up on us, and our food arrived fairly quickly.

The food itself was great! I remember the salmon nigiri, pork katsu, and goma-ae standing out the most. I've been to a lot of sushi places in other areas and this one definitely stacks up with them with the quality of the food here - not knock-me-off-my-feet amazing, but very solid and well worth what you pay for.

All in all it was a great night out and I can see why my friends come here regularly! I'll be more than happy to come back to this place again.

Nice Dinner Experience
Submitted Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 10:59pm [Dine in]

I had a good early dinner for two on a quiet Thursday night while on a recent visit to Richmond. We didn't make reservations, but we were seated right away when we arrived. The waitress serving us was very nice, and she was quick to take our order when we were ready.

As for the food it was pretty good. We had crispy fried rice with shrimp, walnut prawns, and a kind of "crab ball" appetizer (I wish I could remember its proper name). The rice was delicious with a nice light flavor, and the prawns were to die for. The only thing we didn't care for was the crab, but it was more of a personal taste thing rather than the food being prepared poorly. I didn't realize that the prawns generally are made with milk which I'm allergic to, but that was my fault for not realizing it until I got sick later. However, I'm getting hungry thinking about the food as I write this, and that's always a good sign for me despite my allergy mistake.

The atmosphere was nice, tables laid out fairly well, and I loved how you could see some of the food being prepped in the open kitchen. Even though it got busy after we arrived we didn't feel cramped or forgotten about by our waitress.

All in all it was a good place to eat - pretty solid all around. It is on the pricey side so I wouldn't be able to go frequently, but I'd visit again to sample more of their menu at the very least!

Good Food, Great Experience
Submitted Tuesday, June 8, 2010 - 6:31pm [Dine in]

My significant other wanted to take me to a special dinner and suggested Steveston Seafood House. Now seafood wouldn't normally be my first choice, but I wanted to try something different.

We were certainly not disappointed in the least bit! We went on a quiet Sunday night, and were actually waited on by the owner himself. He was incredibly nice and very knowledgeable about the menu. I have a bad milk allergy and he was able to tell me which things I would be okay with and even which dishes the chef could tweak to make all right for me while still keeping their flavor. Usually servers are quick to tell me they can take out things, but not many suggest alternatives for a custom made dish!

Between the two of us we ordered Pacific Crab Cakes, caesar salad, Lulu Island, and the special of the night which was salmon wrapped around cod in this dijon-maple glaze. I was extremely impressed with both, but in particular the special because even without the creme sauce it originally came with, I couldn't tell it was missing anything at all is was so delicious. Everything was presented beautifully, cooked perfectly, and even the vegetables and rice that came with my entree were very flavorful! My beau was quite impressed with his dishes as well and even treated himself to a very tasty-looking cheesecake after. Our praises also go to the chef working that night because it's been a long time since we've had food that good, especially since I normally don't go straight for seafood!

I am so, so glad we went to this place and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great seafood dinner with excellent service. We'll definitely be returning!
