Great Favor on Valentine's
Submitted Sunday, March 27, 2011 - 11:00am [Take-out]

I had to leave the city on Valentine's for work. I wanted my wife to have a special meal but wasn't sure what to get her. I decided that I could get her take out from Doux Crepes and then she could eat it there if she wanted or take it home. (I didn't think she'd want to sit alone in a restaurant on Valentine's Day) The owner was there when I went in to arrange it and he was very accommodating. I ordered asparagus and mushroom risotto, a french kiss crepe for desert and a latte. She was thrilled and said the meal was excellent. I had the risotto previously and knew that it was amazing. Thanks to Doux Crepes for helping to create a great Valentine's Day for my wife...happy wife, happy life :-)

Amazing...loved it.
Submitted Sunday, March 27, 2011 - 10:33am [Dine in]

We had lunch at The Reef yesterday. I loved the atmosphere. We started off with drinks, my wife had a virgin Mojito, which she enjoyed but said could have used a little more sweetness, I had a Ginger Beer and it was excellent. The manager was our server and she was very helpful describing the dishes and helping us decide on what we wanted to eat. My wife ordered the Jamaican Bun with Jerk Pork and I ordered the Trini Roti with Goat. When we received our meals we were also given Johnny cakes which are normally only served at brunch as she had identified us as first timers to the restaurant. The Johnny Cakes came with pineapple mango butter, I could have eaten a whole meal of just that. My wife's Jerk Pork was excellent although she said she would have liked a little more meat and a little less bun. Her meal was served with a side of fried plantains that she didn't think much of, but I ate half of them and thought they were good with the dipping sauce they came with. My Trini Roti was outstanding, the goat meat was very tender and the spices blended nicely to give it great flavor. I also tried some of the Reef Brand Hot sauce which added a little heat and was also very flavorful. We thought the service was top notch, very friendly and helpful . We had a Groupon for this restaurant so with it I thought the value was outstanding, without it I might only give it a solid 3. We will definitely be back to this caribbean gem.

Addiction
Submitted Tuesday, July 21, 2009 - 6:24pm [Dine in]

I am addicted to the shawarma sandwiches. I eat here usually at least once a week. Staff is very friendly and efficient. Food is amazing. Shawarma plate is also very good and is a huge portion if you're hungry it will fill you. There are a few stools in the restaurant that look out over Robson or you can sit at the sidewalk tables and people watch.

Excellent Meal
Submitted Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - 9:43pm [Dine in]

We decided spur of the moment to go out for dinner. We've been wanting to go to Vij's and thought the early time would translate into no lineups and a quick seating (got there at 5:50pm and they open at 5:30).

We were told it would be an hour wait and we decided to sit and have a drink and wait. The server told us that people started lining up at 5:00pm.

We did have to wait the full hour but the time flew by as we were treated to numerous offerings of appetizers, all very tasty.

My date had the pork and I had the duck breast. The pork was fantastic, one of the best dishes we've ever had. The duck was very good as well. The Naan bread was hot, tasty and plentiful and the rice was excellent.

The servers are very efficient, well informed and helpful. Their suggestions for wine and meal were outstanding (My girlfriend couldn't decide between the beef ribs and the pork, and the pork was a great choice)

We shared the rice pudding for desert. The best I've ever had.

Meeru and Vikram have a wonderful restaurant and we look forward to dining there again...hopefully soon. ;-)

Great Birthday Dinner
Submitted Wednesday, July 9, 2008 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

what a great experience, our servers were knowledgeable, made good suggestions, and had excellent timing. The complimentary bread and pate was an appetizing start to our meal, both were also replenished long before we ran out. My honey started with a grilled Caesar salad which was artfully presented and topped with freshly shaved Parmesan, for our entrees we had pasted with braised veal cheeks and Porcini mushroom and Osso Bucco with risotto, both were delicious. We finished with a lemoncello cheesecake with an odd crunchy topping which did grow on us but while pleasing to the eye didn't initially sit well on the pallet. All in all an excellent experience that was worth the price.

Great Food, Relaxing Atmosphere
Submitted Saturday, June 28, 2008 - 9:52pm [Dine in]

We decided to go to the Afghan Horsemen for our anniversary. What a wonderful experience.

We were seated in the cushion room which is incredibly relaxing and enjoyable. I wasn't sure I'd be comfortable sitting so near the floor but I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and relaxed it was.

The food was great. We ordered the Horsemen Platter which was more than enough for two people. It was a nice mix of many of the dishes offered on the main menu. We loved the lamb shoulder, the shish kebobs as well as the egg plant dish. I had "Dough" which is a yogurt drink that was very good, it remnded me of taziki sauce. We had the rice pudding with almonds and cardamon for desert. It was as good a rice pudding as I've ever had.

The servers were very attentive and helpful.

I highly recommend this restaurant.

Love the Burger
Submitted Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 1:00pm [Dine in]

Been to The Flying Beaver numerous times since moving here three months ago. The Black and Blue Burger is very good. The Butter Chicken is outstanding as is Spicy Pepper Jack Burger. Love the fries and the different mayo dips for the fries.

and we fly a lot so the location is great and watching the float planes land is always fun. The heated patio is wonderful.

If you need to go to the Airport to pick someone up (my girlfriend works for an airline discount for airline employees on Tuesdays) this is a great place to take a hungry guest. It is a great first impression of Vancouver.

Good Food
Submitted Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 12:46pm [Dine in]

We've been to this restaurant twice in the last month. The first time the service was poor but the food was excellent. The second visit was mid week and the owner waited on us and the level of service was much better.
The second visit we sat on the patio which is secluded from the street by a fence. The inside of the restaurant is decorated festively and has a definite Mexican feel.

The broken Sombrero was very tasty. The Mexican pizza is also very good. The Margarita and Virgin margaritas were both wonderful.

We will dine here again and hope we get the owner as our waitress.

Great Meal
Submitted Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 12:28pm [Dine in]

We were in the mood for Greek and were headed to Davie but didn't feel like standing in line at Stepho's so after reading the review for Takis we decided to give it a try. The restaurant was packed but we were seated by the window within 5 minutes. The food was outstanding and the waiter was very helpful when it came time to order as we had a few questions. Our appetizer wasn't delivered and we needed to ask for it after our entre arrived but they were very apologetic and gave us the appy for free. The main course took a little while to arrive but the restaurant was packed and it was nice to people watch as we were seated right by the windows looking onto Davie. I definitely recommend this restaurant. We will return.

Nice View
Submitted Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 12:17pm [Dine in]

I've always enjoyed dining at The Boathouse Restaurants. This was our first visit to this location. Initially we had a reservation in the dining room but we were dressed a little casual (jeans/T-Shirt) and decided to eat in the lounge instead. The staff was very helpful and notified the dining room of our change in plans. We had a wonderful view of English Bay. The food was great and the service was as well. We will return, probably a little more appropriately dressed for the dining room.

Good Value
Submitted Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 12:12pm [Dine in]

Good meal, Hostess was very friendly and the wait staff was very attentive and efficient. Food was good and reasonably priced. Nice ambiance. We haven't tried the higher priced more well know local Italian restaurants yet so have no comparison to offer. We made a reservation early mid week and had no problem getting a good table. Will return.

Good meal, nothing outstanding
Submitted Sunday, June 22, 2008 - 12:05pm [Dine in]

Penne with Gorganzola and Penne Salsiccia was fine but seemed to lack complexity of flavor that would have made it a memorable meal. Service was good but not extraordinary as we needed to ask for water and knives for one place setting. The meal was served very quick and it was a busy Saturday night. Pizza looked fantastic, we will return to try the pizza.
