Tojo's Restaurant1133 W Broadway, Vancouver
Very Nice but Not Worth It.
Submitted Wednesday, December 28, 2011 - 12:20pm [Dine in]

When you first step into this restaurant, you'll notice the ambiance, it is soothing and inviting. Relaxing even.

Then you take a look at the menu and you'll notice all the quotes from famous people/publication/tv show and awards for the restaurant. Promising indeed.

Next you open the menu and you go "Whoa...ok then....hope it's worth it." then you go
"maybe i should go across the street and go tomokazu for all you can eat for the price of a roll here...hmmm..."

The service i gave it mediocre because we had to wait quite a bit for everything. Even water and tea! I know the place is bigger than most and it is busy, not packed, just busy, but waiting for 10 minutes to get your water just doesn't warrant anything above mediocre for service. Not to mention a supposed high end dining place.

The food i gave it outstanding because the ingredients are top notch fresh. It is not even excellent when you think about the perceive standard that the price range suggested. The taste is nothing special because i've tasted the same stuffs at other much cheaper restaurants. The portion size is also very small.

That brings the score for value at poor. This is what i got for myself, yes myself.
I ordered baked oysters at 2 for $10 and what i got was half an oyster in each shell, rest filled with mushrooms.
The assorted nigiri came in at $34 and you get 8 pieces of nigiri and a small tuna roll. Fresh fish that you can get else where.
The rolls were minimum $20 each. There were 8 pieces for a roll. Good but not at that price. Oh and my roll came loose.
The only thing that is worth the price is the homemade sorbet, at $6 each.

So to sum it up, i am very disappointed with tojo. It's a good restaurant with good food but the reputation and the price range just don't match the product. There are japanese restaurants out there that serve equally good quality at half the price. I can't recommend this restaurant. If you have to go, don't go hungry or you'll be broke.

not average, just bad.

This is the old Dragon Palace. You won't mistaken it with the same decor, same menu, and same name (in chinese). However, compared to the old Dragon Palace, the food is just down right nasty.

We were fans of the old Dragon Palace. So we were excited to learn that it has resurfaced as Inn Noodle House. One dish that we particularly look forward to is their black cod in special sauce. So off we go tonight for dinner.

The decor is the same as Dragon Palace, pretty sure they re-use the same tables and chairs. So the ambiance is very mediocre. As another reviewer had mentioned, it is smoky in there with the oily smell of the kitchen.

The service is pretty awful. The 3 servers looked like they just woke up. It's almost like they feel guilty serving us their food.

Now the food. We ordered:
Hot and sour soup. It is the worst hot and sour soup in recent memory, that's including food court soup and instant soup mix.

Chop suey. Veggies are nicely fried, not overcooked. A tad on the salty side.

Seafood fried rice. Flavour is there, seafood is fresh, but quite salty.

Chicken chow mein. Very salty.

Honey garlic pork. Too dry. Imagine a piece of pork that you deep fried in the morning then let it sit til evening, deep fried again and serve. That's the same pork here.

Black cod with special sauce. I seriously hope that it's just a mess up from the cook tonight because this used to be so good. The dish we got tonight is too salty to eat, and i like my salted fish. So definitely not worth the $14.95 for this dish.

So to sum it up, a good restaurant gone bad. Good bye Dragon Palace.

Go here if you like overpaying for food.

Went here with a group of friends and got one of their private dining room.

The ambiance is good but nothing spectacular. Lets face it, not like they have a nice view or anything.

The service was good, friendly and attentive staffs.

Now the real reason why we go there, the food. Honestly this is personally one of the most overrated restaurant i've ever dined in. The food was average at best.
The raw oysters were very good cause they were fresh.
The king crab legs were good, the shrimps in the shrimp cocktail although big in size were not as fresh as they should be.
The lamb chops were good but not $43 good.
The steaks were good but again not $45 good.
The sides were overly seasoned. Especially bad was the mash potatoes. It was too salty and runny.

So in summary, you could get the same quality of food in a restaurant that cost 20% less.

Good food, good service, just don't bring cake!

Been going to this restaurant for a few years now.
Usually with a group for birthday dinner.
Went there last month for a birthday dinner and the waitress inform us that there'll be a small fee to have our birthday cake there.
Food was great as always, then came cake time, and then bill time.
The small fee came to be $12.
Frankly if they keep applying this small fee, we'll probably switch to My Greek in coquitlam for our future parties.

Went here with a group of friends just to hang out and have some food.

When you look at the menu you'll notice that the prices are quite a bit higher than your average sushi place. That is if you can actually read the menu being there are no lights in the restaurant other than a few candles. We had to read using flashlights for crying out loud.

The service was bad to say the least. The waitresses don't do what you requested at all. They always say they'll be right back when you ask for something but they never did. Oh and they can't seem to get the orders right. They brought us wrong food and being it's so dark in there, you can't tell what you got until you took a bit at it. Also asked them to pack our food with the dipping sauces that come with it, got home and no sauce to be found.

The food is only worth half the price they charge. The rolls all fall apart when you try to pick them up. Doesn't matter if it's big roll or small basic roll, they just can't roll them tight enough for it to stay in one piece!

This restaurant has become one of our favourite to go for food.

The decor is nothing special. Plain and boring even. Service can be slow because they do get very busy with line up out the door. So don't expect much for this when you do go.

However, they do have awesome food. Especially their shanghai dim sum "siao loong pao". Smoked duck, honey prawn, pork with garlic sauce, and their hot and sour soup are our favorites.

We've been there several times this past 3 months or so. Every time, the food is consistently great.

I highly recommend that you give this place a try.

No. 1 Beef Noodle House4741 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby
Worst wonton noodle in lower mainland.
Submitted Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 4:46pm [Dine in]

Went to this place two days ago with a bunch of friends. We've heard that this place has good food. But we were disappointed to say the least.

It's very noisy in there. But that's kinda normal for being a bubble tea and noodle house. The service is good. They promptly give us more tea when needed.

I ordered their pork with garlic sauce on rice. This dish is ok. I mean it tasted like something that i could have made at home. There are other restaurants that are way better for this dish.

My friends ordered their beef noodle. According to them the beef was nice and tender. However, the soup is not that flavorful. So for a place that has a name of NO.1 beef noodle house, this is a failed.

Now on to the worst wonton noodle in the lower mainland. My sister ordered this. The wontons tasted ok. No prawns in there. What makes this the worst i've tasted is the soup. The soup has no taste at all. Very plain. Tasted like a watered down vegetable stock.

we won't be going back for sure.

Been to this restaurant a few times the past few months. Not the best japanese food but pretty darn good.

It's a small restaurant. The decor is pretty modern but lack a comfortable feel to it. Service is pretty good when they are not busy. But when they are busy, better sit outside in the common dining area so it's easier to flag them down for service.

The food taste good. Their fancy rolls taste great and not too pricey. Their donburi are a little on the plain side. Chicken don needs more chicken. Yakisoba is awesome. Regular sushi rolls such as tuna roll are very good with fresh fish. One thing they need to work on is more appertizers on the menu.

Very good overall and will continue going back.

Nagano Japanese Restaurant2918 Glen Dr, Coquitlam
Don't know why so special.
Submitted Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - 9:54am [Dine in]

Been to nagano a few times the past two years maybe. Still don't get why it's so special in other people's view. Yes they do have different sushi rolls. But other restaurants are coming up with their own fancy neo japanese rolls. Yes their sashimi stuffs are very fresh. But you do pay for it. That's where their so call advantages end.

The decor of the restaurant is so so. Just like every other japanese sushi place. But it does have a comfortable feel to it. The service only average. Friendly with a smile. But nothing special. Now on to the food.

Ordered their gomae. Taste pretty good, portion is a little bit bigger than others but also cost more than others. Their rolls taste good. But like i said above, you get those at other places as well. Had their seafood ramen last night. Not that great. Got bored of the taste after the 3rd spoonful. Had to pour soya sauce into the soup to be able to finish it.

Overall it's only a solid japanese restaurant at best. Too bad not many competitions for them to see improvement to their menu.

Very good indeed.
Submitted Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - 9:45am [Dine in]

Went to this restaurant two nights ago. Ordered a whole bunch of food. The decor is nice, very modern japanese. Although could use nicer and newer tvs but that's not important here.

Service was awesome. Very friendly and attentive. Food was good. Sashimi is fresh and taste good. Chicken don was average. Gomae taste a bit different than other japanese restaurants but not too bad. Chicken karaage however was a disappointment. No taste whatsoever. Need to dip them in soya sauce to be able to eat them.

Overall they are very good. Food, service, and value are very good. They also have items that you don't normally see on other restaurants' menus.

Worth a visit for sure if you around the pitt meadows area.

Went to this restaurant once. Still remember it all. That says alot about the quality of this restaurant.

Had their chicken parmesan and let me say this is the best chicken parmesan outside of wynn hotel in las vegas. If it wasn't so far away, i would be a regular to this restaurant. Portion is big, but most importantly the taste is awesome.

Free soup and salad, that's all.
Submitted Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - 9:25pm [Dine in]

They have free soup or salad with every order of entree. The soup and the salad are both very good also. And it's unlimited!! That is the only reason why we go there. Because that makes the value unbeatable. Their prices are already on the low side for a restaurant, have three bowls of soup and your entree is like $2.

However, their entree dishes are mostly not that good. Pasta dishes that lack flavours, chicken parmesan that makes you question where the rest of the chicken is. Had their new pasta dish last time. Suppose to be the winner of their cook off among all their chefs. But it was very very disappointing to say the least.

After all that is said and done, i would still go back. Come on, who doesn't like free unlimited soup that is delicious :)

This restaurant is nothing to look at. Bare decor and cheap furnitures. The same feel as a cafeteria. Service was so so. Never really ask if we want more tea even when our glasses are empty. So don't expect better service when you go.

The food on the other hand is mostly very good. I say mostly because their curry dish is clearly using instant curry. Not good at all. Other than that the fried noodle, the fried rice, the honey garlic ribs are all very good. Way beyond expectation. They have a very impressive menu as well. Next time i would have to try their seafood items.

Oh the milk tea, not that good.

This pub surprised me with how good their food is. The portion is pretty big too. Chicken wings are pretty darn good also. Had their pasta and let me tell you that for a pub, their pasta are better than some italian restaurant.

The service is quite good. Nothing special but nothing bad. The prices are cheap compared to restaurants. Overall this is one of the better pub for food. Definitely going back.

Food doesn't match the price.
Submitted Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - 7:16pm [Dine in]

Went for lunch a few months ago at this restaurant. The boathouse is pretty well known so i expect to have enjoyable food. Especially for them to charge what they charge, it better be enjoyable food.

Sadly i was wrong. The food was only so so. Not bad as in not ateable but just too average for the price. I mean, i could walk down to the restaurant next door and get the same thing for alot less.

The one good thing that this restaurant has is awesome view of the water. But i pay to have food so we haven't gone back since and probably never will.

Used to frequent this restaurant but now the distance makes it hard to be a regular.

The food is very consistent. Taste the same 9 times out of 10. This is one of the few chinese restaurant that has good soup as part of their meals. Most just give watered down broth as part of a combo.

They are very good with their wok cooking. Fried rice, fried noodles, they taste awesome. Noodle soup however, not so much. Hainanese chicken rice taste like it suppose to be. Very authentic on that one.

Their drinks are awesome as well. One of the best milk tea around.

Been to this restaurant a few times. The food is always good but the service is hit or miss. We've gone as a big group or just as a couple. Even if you have a reservation, they don't always honoured it as it is normal that you have to wait 45 minutes to get your table.

The hot pot is good. A bit on the spicy side. Love their lamb hot pot with vegetables. The value is only decent because it is easy for a table of two people to clear 50 just on food alone.

This is one of the restaurant that we keep going back. The food is consistently good, the service is always warm and friendly, the price might be a bit on the high side but you do get what you paid for.

My fav on the menu is definitely the jack daniel ribs. They are so tender that you won't even need to use your knife. Their butternut squash ravioli is also very good. A bit on the rich side but the taste is very balance and leaves you wanting more.

One thing that is a tad on the negative side is they don't change their menu often. There may be a new dish or two but everything stays the same. Need more variety.

Ask for their daily soup. Most of the time they have awesome tasting soup.

Went to this restaurant last week with my gf. Very nice and friendly staffs. Service is very prompt and attentive. The restaurant is new. So it was very busy and very noisy/lively in there. Has quite a few tvs so it has a few of a bar.

The food is good. Had the pork chop and it's pretty nicely done. A bit overdone but not to the point of being dry. The chicken wings are ok. Not something i would order again in there cause there are better wings else where. Yam fries are just yam fries, can't really screw that up :)

Overall would go back again because it's good enough.
