Best thing is free parking
Submitted Sunday, January 31, 2016 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

The title says it all here. Free parking is the only good thing going on for this restaurant. Food was bad, service was mediocre at best and yet they charge like a mid range restaurant.

Their menu looks good. Lobster tail, bisque, prawns, risotto, rack of lamb, and on and on but their don't know how to cook them properly. Overcooked, sauces that are clearly store bought, over seasoned and not to mention warm beer.

There are so many restaurants on Denman so just keep walking and keep looking.

Better food than most fancy downtown restaurants.

Just got back from dinner at this restaurant and the food is impressively good. This is definitely one of the few place in BC that i could honestly say that the food is worth every penny.

The risotto is very good. Rich and balance flavour. The fish is a bit overcooked but not to the extend of being dry. The presentation of the plates are very nice. Overall, i would definitely rate this place above most of the fancy restaurants around downtown Vancouver.

Bad wings, sub par ribs.
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2015 - 6:26pm [Dine in]

Went with a group of friends last week. Ordered their rib and wings combo with yam fries and corn bread.

The best part of the meal is actually the corn bread. Yam fries is decent. The bbq sauce is pretty good but the rib is dry. No fall off the bone meat here, actually need to work the knife to get the meat off.

The wings are bad. So so bad. Twice battered actually means twice fried! Therefore the batter is hard. Such a shame cause the flavour is decent.

I would avoid this restaurant and take my money elsewhere.

A great surprise.
Submitted Monday, September 8, 2014 - 10:31am [Dine in]

The original plan was to go to the restaurant across the street. When we got there, found out that they close on Sundays. It was already 8pm so don't feel like driving some where else. So what do you do? You pivot and look around. Hmm, a greek restaurant across the street and it's open! So in we go.

Usually it's not a good sign when you walk into a restaurant and there are only 2 other patrons sitting at a table in the corner. But they are open! So we were greeted and sat at a table by the window. The interior looks like any other greek restaurant, blue, fake plants, bronze cook wares/decors on the wall, but this one feels oddly cozy. Maybe because of the wide open layout and the high ceiling.

Menu looks typical. Ordered the calamari which the waiter proclaimed as "the best calamari in town", their "best dish in the house" lamb shoulder, and the chef's new creation, smoked salmon. After those claims, me and the missus anxiously waited for our food so i could call the waiter a liar.

Calamari came. Gone in sixty seconds! How bout that, an honest waiter. Their calamari is now tie as "the best calamari in town" in my book. Would definitely go back for more if i'm in that area. Because the other best is only 5 mins from our home.

The lamb shoulder and smoked salmon arrived on our table. Portion was good, be prepare to pack some leftovers. The rice has good flavour, the potatoes were delicious (which i rarely touch in other greek restaurant), the greek salad is well, normal greek salad (not a bad thing).

The lamb is tender. No knife needed here. Could use a bit more seasoning though. But, above average as is. The smoke salmon should be on the menu!! It's a crime of cruelty to serve that to people and then take it away. The agony of not tasting that would be a torture. Ok, maybe that's a bit dramatic but that smoke salmon will make you say "OMG".

I gave a rating of 3-solid for the food because this was my first time here. Although the meal should get a 4 for food, it won't be fair to give a high mark based on one sitting.

Overall, i would go back. The food was great. The service was excellent. Darryl (the waiter) is very attentive and hilarious. And he ain't a liar.

Good dim sum and bbq. Noddle? Not so much.
Submitted Saturday, August 16, 2014 - 10:37am [Dine in]

I like variety when i eat. Therefore i love places that have small dishes to go with my entree. Shang's menu looks promising cause they have tons of selection of dim sum and bbq dishes to go with their noodle. They have excellent roast pork and bbq pork cheeks. Their pork and veggie dumplings are also very good.

Their noodle dishes are just not quite there. The portion is big but doesn't have the best texture and the soup are not quite tastey (not bad but doesn't make you say you want to eat more).

Overall i'll probably go back again at some point when i have craving for dim sums at night. If i want noodle, i'll probably keep driving into burnaby or richmond. Or the new vietnamese restaurant close by.

Save yourself, don't go there.

There are two good things in this review and i'll get them out of the way before the review. 1) The lamb chops was perfectly cooked. Tender and juicy. 2) the vegetables in tomato sauce was delicious.

With that out of the way, here we go. The restaurant needs a refresh. The chairs were wobbly, the table surface and the menus were sticky. The decor are dated. Maybe their food could help me get over that. But nope. The food made it worse.

The greek salad. Half a cup of vegetables drizzled with olive oil, a little bit of cheese, and water. Yes, there are quite a bit of water left on the saucer. At least you know they wash the vegetables. In hindsight, i should have save that salad to go with the lamb chops.

The calamari. $9 and i'm still looking for the other half of the portion. There are less than 30 pieces of squids there and those are small pieces. And the taste, oh the funny taste. So bad. It looks and smells like calamari but there is a weird taste there. As if they re-use the oil from previous night. And it's bland. Even the tzatziki sauce is also bland with a weird consistency. It looked like it's been sitting in the fridge for more than a day.

The lamb chops as i have wrote were perfectly cooked. Such a waste because it was so so so salty. Thank goodness for the vegetables in tomato sauce. I used it to flavour the bland rice and that helped with the salty lamb.

As some has said the service is lacking. No smile and no energy. I could see that some of the servers are at odds at each other. Even when you try to pay, you feel like you are bothering them.

Good food. Great calamari.
Submitted Saturday, August 16, 2014 - 9:25am [Dine in]

Been to this place a lot this year. Anytime we have a craving for calamari in fact. It's that good. The squid is tender, the barter is nicely seasoned, the tzatziki sauce compliments the calamari very well.

The roast lamb is good. Good portion and good seasoning.
The souvlaki is okay. Not bad but nothing special.
The red snapper and salmon are good. Of course being baked, there are times that it's overcooked but that sauce on top makes up for it.
The lasagna is huge! It's three times the size we were expecting it to be when we ordered. Taste okay but it's huge!

A bonus for the restaurant is they have delicious rice pilaf with their entree. It's not dry like your typical greek rice. Almost like they heat it up in a broth before they serve it.

They get a 3 for food but i really want to give 3.5 because they do some dishes very well and some are just average. Nothing bad yet.
Service is a 3. Friendly and attentive enough but not quite outstanding. Sometimes there are only one server there and he/she is tending to other things at the back.
Value wise it's a 4 because there are only 2 dishes on the menu i would deem higher than average. Portion to price ratio puts them at a 4.
Ambiance is typical hole in a wall restaurant. At least it's clean and tidy.

Sour taste
Submitted Monday, August 11, 2014 - 8:30am [Dine in]

Went for dim sum with a group of friends. Typical chinese restaurant decor and service. I'll give them a benefit of a doubt for the borderline rude service because they were packed. So packed that you barely feel the ac in the air.

My real concern here is with the food. Mainly the quality control of the food. They served us sour dim sum. The raddish cake (lo bak ko) is clearly overdue for a trip to the dumpster and yet it was on our table. You could smell the sourness let alone tasting the sourness. Unfortunately there is nothing on the menu that is outstanding either to pull this bad taste out of the "poor" rating.

A group of us went for dinner and got to try a bunch of dishes. No ambiance whatsoever but who cares when they let their food do the talking.

Tried 8 or 9 different dishes there and they are all very good. Not greasy, not too spicy (when you asked for medium), good wok skills, and perfect seasoning. Highly recommend their Mambo chicken.

If you are ever in that area and looking for food, this place is a must try.

Went to this place three times for their buffet. The result is they are very good during lunch time and not good for dinner. The reason being during lunch buffet the food are freshly cooked. The meat are juicy and the veggies are crunchy. Dinner time comes around and you will see food that has been reheated and sat in oil. Pretty gross actually.

So if you want to go for lunch, i highly recommend it. The food is delicious. If you are going for dinner i suggest you skip the buffet and get their regular menu items.

Four of us went for dinner on the weekend. Nice atmosphere and very nice patio. Nice friendly greeter and seated us promptly. Another thing you'll notice is this place is very clean and tidy which is a bonus.

Ordered the mussels and calamari. Mussels were very good. Calamari was tasteless and rubbery.

For entrees, tasted the following:

Seafood linguine - Very good. Seasoning is right on, seafood nicely cooked, pasta cooked perfectly. Definitely get this again.

House salad - Very good dressing. Some wilted spinach in there and for a house salad, not many variety of veggies.

Pesto chicken quesadilla - Very good. Definitely worth getting again. Everything just work together in this dish.

Halibut - Bad, bad, bad. Save your money on this one. Overcooked (texture of a piece of chicken) and fish tasted like freezer burnt. Oh and needed more seasoning.

Very Nice but Not Worth It.
Submitted Wednesday, December 28, 2011 - 1:20pm [Dine in]

When you first step into this restaurant, you'll notice the ambiance, it is soothing and inviting. Relaxing even.

Then you take a look at the menu and you'll notice all the quotes from famous people/publication/tv show and awards for the restaurant. Promising indeed.

Next you open the menu and you go "Whoa...ok then....hope it's worth it." then you go
"maybe i should go across the street and go tomokazu for all you can eat for the price of a roll here...hmmm..."

The service i gave it mediocre because we had to wait quite a bit for everything. Even water and tea! I know the place is bigger than most and it is busy, not packed, just busy, but waiting for 10 minutes to get your water just doesn't warrant anything above mediocre for service. Not to mention a supposed high end dining place.

The food i gave it outstanding because the ingredients are top notch fresh. It is not even excellent when you think about the perceive standard that the price range suggested. The taste is nothing special because i've tasted the same stuffs at other much cheaper restaurants. The portion size is also very small.

That brings the score for value at poor. This is what i got for myself, yes myself.
I ordered baked oysters at 2 for $10 and what i got was half an oyster in each shell, rest filled with mushrooms.
The assorted nigiri came in at $34 and you get 8 pieces of nigiri and a small tuna roll. Fresh fish that you can get else where.
The rolls were minimum $20 each. There were 8 pieces for a roll. Good but not at that price. Oh and my roll came loose.
The only thing that is worth the price is the homemade sorbet, at $6 each.

So to sum it up, i am very disappointed with tojo. It's a good restaurant with good food but the reputation and the price range just don't match the product. There are japanese restaurants out there that serve equally good quality at half the price. I can't recommend this restaurant. If you have to go, don't go hungry or you'll be broke.

This is the old Dragon Palace. You won't mistaken it with the same decor, same menu, and same name (in chinese). However, compared to the old Dragon Palace, the food is just down right nasty.

We were fans of the old Dragon Palace. So we were excited to learn that it has resurfaced as Inn Noodle House. One dish that we particularly look forward to is their black cod in special sauce. So off we go tonight for dinner.

The decor is the same as Dragon Palace, pretty sure they re-use the same tables and chairs. So the ambiance is very mediocre. As another reviewer had mentioned, it is smoky in there with the oily smell of the kitchen.

The service is pretty awful. The 3 servers looked like they just woke up. It's almost like they feel guilty serving us their food.

Now the food. We ordered:
Hot and sour soup. It is the worst hot and sour soup in recent memory, that's including food court soup and instant soup mix.

Chop suey. Veggies are nicely fried, not overcooked. A tad on the salty side.

Seafood fried rice. Flavour is there, seafood is fresh, but quite salty.

Chicken chow mein. Very salty.

Honey garlic pork. Too dry. Imagine a piece of pork that you deep fried in the morning then let it sit til evening, deep fried again and serve. That's the same pork here.

Black cod with special sauce. I seriously hope that it's just a mess up from the cook tonight because this used to be so good. The dish we got tonight is too salty to eat, and i like my salted fish. So definitely not worth the $14.95 for this dish.

So to sum it up, a good restaurant gone bad. Good bye Dragon Palace.

Went here with a group of friends and got one of their private dining room.

The ambiance is good but nothing spectacular. Lets face it, not like they have a nice view or anything.

The service was good, friendly and attentive staffs.

Now the real reason why we go there, the food. Honestly this is personally one of the most overrated restaurant i've ever dined in. The food was average at best.
The raw oysters were very good cause they were fresh.
The king crab legs were good, the shrimps in the shrimp cocktail although big in size were not as fresh as they should be.
The lamb chops were good but not $43 good.
The steaks were good but again not $45 good.
The sides were overly seasoned. Especially bad was the mash potatoes. It was too salty and runny.

So in summary, you could get the same quality of food in a restaurant that cost 20% less.

Been going to this restaurant for a few years now.
Usually with a group for birthday dinner.
Went there last month for a birthday dinner and the waitress inform us that there'll be a small fee to have our birthday cake there.
Food was great as always, then came cake time, and then bill time.
The small fee came to be $12.
Frankly if they keep applying this small fee, we'll probably switch to My Greek in coquitlam for our future parties.

Went here with a group of friends just to hang out and have some food.

When you look at the menu you'll notice that the prices are quite a bit higher than your average sushi place. That is if you can actually read the menu being there are no lights in the restaurant other than a few candles. We had to read using flashlights for crying out loud.

The service was bad to say the least. The waitresses don't do what you requested at all. They always say they'll be right back when you ask for something but they never did. Oh and they can't seem to get the orders right. They brought us wrong food and being it's so dark in there, you can't tell what you got until you took a bit at it. Also asked them to pack our food with the dipping sauces that come with it, got home and no sauce to be found.

The food is only worth half the price they charge. The rolls all fall apart when you try to pick them up. Doesn't matter if it's big roll or small basic roll, they just can't roll them tight enough for it to stay in one piece!

This restaurant has become one of our favourite to go for food.

The decor is nothing special. Plain and boring even. Service can be slow because they do get very busy with line up out the door. So don't expect much for this when you do go.

However, they do have awesome food. Especially their shanghai dim sum "siao loong pao". Smoked duck, honey prawn, pork with garlic sauce, and their hot and sour soup are our favorites.

We've been there several times this past 3 months or so. Every time, the food is consistently great.

I highly recommend that you give this place a try.

Worst wonton noodle in lower mainland.
Submitted Thursday, May 20, 2010 - 5:46pm [Dine in]

Went to this place two days ago with a bunch of friends. We've heard that this place has good food. But we were disappointed to say the least.

It's very noisy in there. But that's kinda normal for being a bubble tea and noodle house. The service is good. They promptly give us more tea when needed.

I ordered their pork with garlic sauce on rice. This dish is ok. I mean it tasted like something that i could have made at home. There are other restaurants that are way better for this dish.

My friends ordered their beef noodle. According to them the beef was nice and tender. However, the soup is not that flavorful. So for a place that has a name of NO.1 beef noodle house, this is a failed.

Now on to the worst wonton noodle in the lower mainland. My sister ordered this. The wontons tasted ok. No prawns in there. What makes this the worst i've tasted is the soup. The soup has no taste at all. Very plain. Tasted like a watered down vegetable stock.

we won't be going back for sure.

Been to this restaurant a few times the past few months. Not the best japanese food but pretty darn good.

It's a small restaurant. The decor is pretty modern but lack a comfortable feel to it. Service is pretty good when they are not busy. But when they are busy, better sit outside in the common dining area so it's easier to flag them down for service.

The food taste good. Their fancy rolls taste great and not too pricey. Their donburi are a little on the plain side. Chicken don needs more chicken. Yakisoba is awesome. Regular sushi rolls such as tuna roll are very good with fresh fish. One thing they need to work on is more appertizers on the menu.

Very good overall and will continue going back.

Don't know why so special.
Submitted Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - 10:54am [Dine in]

Been to nagano a few times the past two years maybe. Still don't get why it's so special in other people's view. Yes they do have different sushi rolls. But other restaurants are coming up with their own fancy neo japanese rolls. Yes their sashimi stuffs are very fresh. But you do pay for it. That's where their so call advantages end.

The decor of the restaurant is so so. Just like every other japanese sushi place. But it does have a comfortable feel to it. The service only average. Friendly with a smile. But nothing special. Now on to the food.

Ordered their gomae. Taste pretty good, portion is a little bit bigger than others but also cost more than others. Their rolls taste good. But like i said above, you get those at other places as well. Had their seafood ramen last night. Not that great. Got bored of the taste after the 3rd spoonful. Had to pour soya sauce into the soup to be able to finish it.

Overall it's only a solid japanese restaurant at best. Too bad not many competitions for them to see improvement to their menu.
