We have been diners at the James Street Cafe and Grill for over two years now. Initially, the food and service was good (above average) but ever since the owners changed to the East African / Indian cuisine, we'd both have to say it is terrific!
The food is consistently beautifully prepared (my favourite is the Kuku Paka), deliciously flavoured and served well, and there is always more than I can (or should) eat. The best deal on their menu is the Nyama Choma platter (which can easily feed two), a variety of grilled meats served with rice or fries although I would recommend that diners try Mogo instead - deep-fried cassava strips that are, well, different but not in a negative way. If one isn't in the mood for, or a lover of, Indian-style food, they have a nice selection of western dishes that are also worth trying and of good value. Usually we're too full for dessert but once in a while we'll have the Ras Malai which is truly delicious.
Service at the James Street has always been very good - owners Anish and Peri treat us like family and the servers are always polite and friendly. The restaurant is casually decorated - there is no overwhelming Indian or African theme to it, and the music is okay - I'd spice it up some with more classical Indian music and throw in some Bollywood - but played at a comfortable level.
The James Street has become very popular and often hosts private parties, so if you are planning to go on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or holiday, I would definitely recommend calling ahead.
Now I feel like Kuku Paka.........
