It's all about the beer

I'd have to agree with the gist of all the previous reviews. The ambience and decor of the place are both really appealing. We actually had quite good service and the food came out quickly. We ordered the french fries and later on got tempted into trying the chocolate cake with the cherry lambic sauce. This odd combination served to remind us of the dangers of eating at bars with delusions of restauranthood. Though it wants to be a tapas place a la one of the Bins, it's really a bar. The golden rule of bars, of course, is stick to basic bar food, like fries. Never fall for the lure of fancy schmancy sounding food when you're at a bar! The fries were superb, crispy, hot and the lemon-mayo was incredible. Sadly, the cake was delivered up lukewarm and tasting more eggy than chocolatey. Live and learn. The beer list was amazing and offered up some choices I'd never seen before - even in Belgium. Overall, like so many have said before, stick to beer and the solid bar food and you'll be all right.

Terrific experience

I recently had dinner here and was extremely impressed by every aspect of the experience. The staff are warm and efficient, the decor is lovely and the food is as good as it sounds on the menu. There is a good range of choice and price points so that you don't have to break the bank but you can definitely splash out on special occasions. We also had the excellent Lucca as our waiter and he was perfectly attentive without being intrusive. Superb.

I have to agree with the other reviewers regarding the quality of the food, the attractive presentation and the hip decor. All good. The reason I won't be going back, however, relates to the service. For one thing, as noted in another review, the waitress is quite negligent with the drink orders. We did not get a water refill until after our plates had been cleared away. This minor slip is nothing compared to the downright dishonesty of the waitress during our ordering process. We made it abundently clear that we'd never tried filipino cuisine before and that we were worried about ordering too much. She assured us that 2 tapas orders apiece would not be enough food and convinced us to order a full-meal curry dish as well. The reality is that it was way too much for two people. The owner had to add an extra table to our setting to accomodate all the dishes. We plowed through 1/2 of the food and had to have the rest boxed up for leftovers.... Then, when we got up to pay we discovered that the waitress had taken it upon herself to sell us double portions of the pancit, which had been placed on one platter so we had no idea that it was a double order. We left over-stuffed, with a sack of greasy leftovers that are still sitting in the fridge, feeling like suckers. Well, the waitress may have gotten away with padding our order once, but we'll never go back.

Service ruins great food!
Submitted Wednesday, August 16, 2006 - 6:36pm [Dine in]

I was recently at the Banana Leaf for lunch with a friend and the great food just could not compensate for the terrible service. We did arrive a bit late for lunch - slightly after 2pm but aside from being told that we'd have to order all our courses at once- were given no indication that the lateness of the hour would be a problem. Our starters, drinks and main meal were all dumped on the table at the same time - leaving us with a mountain of food to manage. We'd only gotten about halfway through our salads when the waiter dropped off our bill. We hadn't even started our main courses before he began to pressure us to pay up. We had to defend our plates several times from being carried off by wait-staff frantic to kick us out. Twice, this was quite literally while still serving ourselves from the platter in question. Eventually we gave up and had the charmless waiter pack everything up to go. There are lots of restaurants in Vancouver serving tasty food. Why go back to a place where the staff treats you like you're an annoyance? Save your money and your self-respect!

different experience

I feel like we went to a different restaurant from the dire place described in some of the negative reviews here. We went on a Tuesday night and there were no female servers at all. The fellow who served us was outstanding. He was attentive without hovering, made an excellent (not overly expensive) wine suggestion and checked several times to ensure that we were happy. We ordered only from the tapas menu and everything was really tasty. The mushrooms and flaming chorizo were particularly good. This seemed like a really top-rate neighbourhood restaurant to us.
