What a treat
Submitted Saturday, November 24, 2012 - 5:25pm [Dine in]

This is the best place for lunch or afternoon tea. Everything is made from scratch, these are the best sandwiches around. In the summer you can sit outside on the patio and enjoy the garden and view of the water.
The desserts are yummy; lots of calories but a worthwhile treat. The dining room is inside the charming Milner heritage home. Everyone comes back once they have had tea here. They sell their own jams, chutney, etc which is also very good.

We love this beautiful little French bakery. It is tucked away, off the beaten path. Everything is wonderful, try the cinnamon buns and French bread. It is a pretty little building with a lovely summer garden around it. You can sit outside in good weather and enjoy your treats. Everything is fresh and flavourful, just like going to a bakery in France. When you drive up you can smell the bread baking. Lots of gluten free options. The prices are on the high end but reflect the quality products that they bake with. I buy the pizza dough on Fridays and create my own pizzas at home. They sell out fast, it is good to get there early. Helpful staff, they are very proud of what they make.

Old buns and brown lettuce
Submitted Saturday, November 24, 2012 - 5:01pm [Dine in]

We had lunch today at the Shady Rest. The menu features local food and sounds great. My husband had the hamburger ($12 for the basic). I had a pork cutlet on a bun ($12). The buns were so old, stale and dry we could hardly bite into them.My husband fries were OK, my salad was a soggy mess of old brown greens. We have eaten here many times before but this was the worst. Wing night on Tuesdays and Thursdays is great, but stay away from the burgers. It is a beautiful spot with wonderful service, I am amazed they can charge such high prices for inferior food.

Always good

This is the best Asian food we have found since moving to the Nanaimo area 2 years ago. Have been here 6 times, everything we have ordered was well prepared, hot, fresh and tasty. It is a big "kitchen table" kind of place. Service is efficient and friendly. Portions are large and prices are reasonable.

Weird service

This place is just OK. The food is passable but expensive. Nice atmosphere, quite empty the 4 times I have been there. Service is odd, not sure if they do not really want business, are just laid back, or perhaps are inexperienced servers who are shy. There is a real shortage of good Asian restaurants in the Nanaimo area so we have been back a few times.
