One year later and still the same poor food quality
Submitted Friday, April 19, 2013 - 10:11am [Take-out]

There are only a large handful of places to eat in Ladner and Tsawwassen. Tonight I was craving thai and the bf did not want to drive into Richmond. I said lets try Kon Thai, he was not going for it, but I told him, Im ordering, if you want something. He finally caved in.

We ordered the exact same dishes that we always do, Pad Se Ew and Sweet and sour chicken, side of rice and this time I wanted the spring rolls.

When I called, I made sure she knew that last time, we only got a tiny bit of chicken, in our sweet and sour chicken. I said please make sure there is chicken in there. I repeated it three times. She said okay, okay.

When we went to pick it up, I told my bf to make sure he opens the containers of food to check, he got distracted by the lady giving a free dessert.

When we got home, there was no rice, even though it was on the bill, the Pad Se Ew was soo greasy and the sweet and sour chicken sauce was weirdly seperating. He was pissed. We werent going to call back as last time we called back, it was a waste of time.

We ate it anyway but it was a mouthful of grease. Guess what I found in my food, a black hair! I was disgusted. I then decided to eat the spring rolls instead, what is going on? Another hair.

We will NEVER eat here again. Maybe the cooks should wear hairnets and be more aware of packing. As for the free dessert, it was horrible. Probably left overs from their buffet.

Friday Night Dinner
Submitted Tuesday, June 26, 2012 - 3:43pm [Dine in]

We went here three weeks ago for dinner (I meant to post shortly after but forgot). My boyfriend came here for a birthday party before and said it was okay food) His mom wanted to try it so we came with her partner. The four of us sat against the wall. Good view of restaurant surrounding.

When we first walked in, it was a bit odd, your not too sure where to go. We were greeted (we made reservations) so were sat immediately. My bf and I arrived first so we decided to order a drink, I had a strawberry daiquiri! Very good!! We could see that he was making all blended drinks with just a small magic bullet.

Bf's mom and partner joined us shortly after. Our server came at all the right times in the beginning. We ordered our food. Ribs and pulled pork platter for the bf, ribs for the mother, burger for the partner and I ordered the seafood salad (weird right, seafood salad at a rib place)

Our food came out about 25 mins later, My salad was huge and so very good! The bf's ribs were tender, but his pulled pork was cold. Mother's rib and potatoe wedges were good she said and her partner said his burger was good as well.

Our server was busy in her section now, so she didnt come by as often. We wanted to order a second round of drinks but with her not coming by, I walked up to the bar and asked the guy for two more drinks. He brought them over right away.

We wanted dessert but we were soo full. Our server let us know that the bartender was actually the owner. A few recommendations for this place: Train your servers and bussers to say "HI" to all customers who walk in. Acknowledgement is key when trying to bring repeat customers back. Ignorance is a bad trait.

GM saved the day
Submitted Tuesday, June 26, 2012 - 3:27pm [Dine in]

Went here for lunch with the mother in law on a monday. Waited at front to be sat on the patio. We actually had to go in to be sat, which we didnt know, until we saw a group of ladies behind us being sat.

It was a nice sunny day, so great day to be on the patio. We were sat by a gentlemen. (at first we were not impressed that we didnt get any acknowledgement at the front, only a few glares)

He came by to get drinks for us. He said they make the best margaritas. My mother in law said 'double'. I had a ginger guava orange drink (sadly cant remember the name. ) It is my favorite summer cocktail!

We ordered the rustic flatbread and soy drummettes and a side of fries. Ive also had the lobster macaroni here before. Very yummy.

Great ambiance, great view, great food! In the end we found out that our server was the General Manager Colin. He welcomed us back and we definately will be back!!

Mario's is back!
Submitted Friday, June 22, 2012 - 10:38am [Dine in]

We came here twice last week.

We hadnt been back in a couple of years as bad service and horrible food kept us away. Not to mention unprofessional gestures from the manager.

We decided to go on a thursday night. When we walked in, it looked different, we were greeted right away and our server was great. She was knowledgeable about the menu and even helped my boyfriend decide what he should eat since he is so indecisive. The menu was 'back' Spinach Dip! Yay. The food was fantastic and definately worth the value!! We were so impressed.

On our second visit, we met the one and only "MARIO" Wow, what a fantastic guy. He has a passion so great for his restaurant, you can feel it!! He welcomed us with open arms.

Our server Matt whom we had couple years back, was still there too! Still the funny comedian that he was and is! Very professional.

I do have to make a comment on their 'hawaiian shirts' though, a tad bit cheesy....

If you had been avoiding Mario's due to their past Management and menu, all I have to say is "MARIO IS BACK",

Been here a bunch of times. Service and Food is definately 100% when you dont have a groupon.

Prepared to be ignored and treated very unprofessionally when you present your groupon to them. They only give you 1/3 of what is actually on their menu. (meaning you only get a limited selection of what you can order)

We ordered Gyoza to start and had to ask for it twice. It finally came 45 mins after. We were almost already done our meal. To add to that, it wasnt even cooked. We had to ask for tea, and they got two out of four of our items wrong, we then had to send it back to the kitchen, where as the server just giggled 'cause she thought it was so funny'

I would recommend going to this restaurant without a groupon. You will get better service and a vast variety of items to order from their menu.

'And to the restaurant, .......the point of groupon is to promote your restaurant, you should be giving 110% service and satisfaction to get people coming back without the groupon.' You have definately lost us.

Submitted Friday, January 27, 2012 - 11:09am [Dine in]

We came for dinner since we read about their renovation a few months back. We like their food, so we wanted to see their new decor.

Pretty nice, definately needed the update. No music playing?? which was really weird. All you could hear was the banter from the kitchen and service staff and the owner talking loud at one of the corner tables.

Our server came to the table and blankly asked us what we wanted to drink. No suggestion of any sort. Hello, your a server, 'have you heard of suggestive selling???' if you suggested something, maybe I would have gotten that instead of water.

We were a bit indecisive on our menu choice. We decided on the lasagna and chicken souvlaki. The food came out at a reasonable time. There were two other tables there while we were there. Great food, but service very lacking. It ruins the experience.

I wish we had the other server, she was smiling and seemed genuinely happy to be serving people.

Submitted Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 5:11pm [Dine in]

This location used to be a dumpy chinese restaurant. Now with blacked out windows, we were curious. We walked into a beautiful Japanese restaurant welcomed by a smiling little lady and a 'greeting' yelled out by a man behind the sushi counter.

We ordered a combo roll C which consists of three rolls, california, dynamite and chicken teriyaki roll. It comes with miso soup. We changed the chicken to beef. For myself, I got a cali cone and a cooked salmon roll. They dont have it on the menu but they will make it for you!

Absolutely amazing. The presentation of the rolls was beautiful. It was like food art! They cut designs of animals out of lemons and carrots and radishes. The Chicken Karrage is good there too. The sashimi is so fresh, and the sunomono salad is zippy, the plump shrimp is to die for.

Keep in mind, that they do charge for green tea. :(

Avoid the plastic california roll/cone filling
Submitted Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 10:51am [Dine in]

I heard people at work raving about this place so we decided to try it. We went at 2pm. The place was soo busy. When you first walk in, if you dont look around, you will miss the paper that says 'put your name at front' I wonder why they did not think about having a little reception area closer to the front doors, that would make more sense.

It didnt take long to get sat. But took a while for someone to come take our order. I noticed that the table beside us was waiting for their bill for quite a while. I ordered a california cone and their bbq salmon roll. My bf ordered the california cone, and the beef and pineapple roll. We ordered ebi gyoza to start. My cone came right away. It looked good, but looks are deceiving. The nori was excellent, good quality nori but the california mix was disgusting! It was like chewing on plastic pieces. My bf tried it and said it was weird as well.

the gyoza came about ten minutes later. Again looked really good but was not served hot, just warm. I liked it but the bf prefers the regular gyoza which I guess I kind of agree with him. The prawn inside didnt really have any taste.

It took about fifteen minutes for our other sushis to come. My bf said his california roll was gross too. His beef roll looked really good! It was huge and fell apart as soon as he picked it up. He said it was okay but it seemed like they used ground beef. My salmon roll was really good!! I liked it.

Im not sure if I would go back as there are other sushi places that are way better. I guess if its convenient for me then I would. Service was lacking. I think they are more focused on money and turning tables over than service.

We went here on the holiday monday. When we walked in, the host looked at us so we thought we were acknowledge, he sat a table before us and came back and sat another couple who just walked in the door. I told him that we were before them and he lied and said that he did not see us.

Our server took over eight minutes to come to our table, no chit chat, just asked us if we were ready to order. Food took a while to come. They didnt look very busy but the servers could have used some help. The 'manager' I think that is who she was, was too busy talking and laughing in the back and would occassionally come up to the front to 'catwalk' and then go to the back.

Our server brought our food, did a check back ten minutes later and then another server brought our bill. I would not go back here, actually this wasnt even my choice to go here, again the bf won out so we ended up here. I hope ABC gets their act together.

This is the SERVICE INDUSTRY!!! so where's the service????

Great Service/Good Pho/ Better than Pho Hua
Submitted Friday, May 14, 2010 - 10:21am [Dine in]

We were on our way to Pho Hua and saw a sign for Pho 99, We were contemplating trying it so we drove by, only one table was in there from what we could see, we decided to go to Pho Hua and then was like hey lets just try it.

Upon entering, no one came out, we didnt know whether we should seat ourselves, then a smiling guy came out and said for two? He seated us and gave us menus. Wow, what an extensive menu. He pointed out the best deal specials and we took a bit of time to go over them.

We both ended up getting combos and upping our drink to smoothies. My Pho came first, I wish it was hotter, but it was good. The chicken wings are tiny but tasty. My bf's lemongrass chicken and rolls didnt come til almost ten minutes later. The server was serving all the tables that came in, I think there were five other tables, while the girls were chatting on their phones.IDK maybe they were on a break, but if they could see he was busy, why wouldnt they help him?

Our smoothies came at almost the end of the meal, which I thought was weird, but they were sooo good. I wish they had pearls. lol

Our experience with food and service here was awesome. The ambiance was ruined by a girl with a very annoying voice sitting at the table ahead of us, talking so loud, we might as well have been sitting with them. She was very much a princess! I feel sorry for the guy who was with her who had to deal with her voice. Im sure he was embarrassed but didnt want to say so.

Would definately come back to eat here. Pho Hua will not be getting my business ever again.

Overpriced buffet due to holiday/server not in tune
Submitted Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 1:25pm [Dine in]

We went here for mothers day. Didnt have a reso, but were told 'a table just opened up' We were lead onto the patio with tons of open tables all around us. Because of the day, they were only serving buffet, so we pretty much had no choice but to do the buffet.

The lay out of the buffet was so rediculous. You can tell that they obviously didnt think this through.

there was a large selection of breakfast items, waffles, french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash. Good seafood selection. There was pasta, some kind of roast. No chicken :( The dessert selection was okay. Their cheesecake is absolutely fantastic!

Our server was not so great at 'serving' We had to wait a few times for her to bring drinks to us. When she cleared our plates, she told us to keep our dirty cutlery! Gross. Would it have been that hard to bring us new cutlery??

The bill came to $184 with tax! Yes! Thats a brunch! Four people with two drinks each. The buffet was $29 per person alone!

Would probably go back, but just for the regular menu.

Better Sushi/Service Elsewhere
Submitted Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 1:09pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend really likes this place. I beg to differ. I think he only likes this place because it is MAYBE one of the only 'reasonable sushi places in ladner' and it is only five minutes from home.

The times that we eat here, I always feel sick afterwards. I totally refuse to dine in because service is sooo bad. I dont understand why they cant acknowledge anyone when they first walk in. A simple hi/ hello would suffice. Instead they greet with a turned eye and seat you only when its convenient for them.

The last time we ordered, My california cones were ALL rice, and a few strands of that fake crab meat. I would rather hop in the car and drive ten minutes into richmond where you can find many other good sushi places.

We eat at this location on a regular basis. Never had any complaints about quality. I hate that they changed their peri veggies. Who eats eggplant? Yuck!

We always expect the same kinda service and food. This time was different. We were greeted by a smiling girl who took pride in her job. She was super cheerful and didnt rush me when I couldnt decide on a drink.

She brought our food to us again with a smile and even checked to make sure we were doing okay. She kept busy cleaning tables and checking on other tables around us.

Kudos to this amazing girl!

Food was great. My ceasar salad was a bit dry, as it usually is, we always have to ask for more dressing. I left it alone this time. Fries were crispy and my chicken was good as it always is.

Went here on a friday night. They asked if we had a reservation, we didnt, but we were sat right away, by the window. It was very nice. Ambiance was nice. (bird poop on window above us was kinda gross, but minus that, it was all good) Our server was great. She came at all the right times.

You can see the team work is amazing here. All of them are so attentive. The servers have service staff who clear plates or pour cold water/ serve coffee for them. They all look relaxed and not frazzled. Food seemed to be coming out at a good speed to various tables around us.

We ordered the platter for two. Wow, way too much food for the both of us. They were nice to let us sub lamb for chicken as we dont eat lamb. I love their dolmades, one of the best I've ever had! Their pita is whole wheat which is a nice change from the regular white pita. We orginally came for lasagna, sadly they dont have it :( (come on Felicos, where's the lasagna :P)

We wanted dessert but were way too stuffed. We would definately come back here.

It was our first time here. Had to wait a few minutes before they seated us. Our server came by and was very 'business like' no hello, or little chit chat. Asked for our order and left.

Ambiance was really nice. We liked it. maybe a bit too dark though. There was a musician playing. It was at a great level. They should have turned the tv's off in respect to him though. I thought it was a little rude to have them on.

Larry came back with our food, and left. Did a quality check and then never returned. Great portions. The lasagna was really good but a bit on the spicy side. I had the rib dinner, it was good as well, but the ribs were cold, I didnt mention it. The vegetables that they serve with the dinner were awesome! I loved them.

Larry packed up our lasagna and a few ribs and then gave us the bill. Bill came to $33, we left $40.

We will probably go back, hopefully service is better.

Third dissappointment
Submitted Tuesday, February 2, 2010 - 3:45pm [Dine in]

We visited this location three weeks ago. We have already had two bad experiences prior to this, but we thought, third time may be the charm. Wrong!

Upon arriving, two hostesses were at the front but did not help us, they continued chatting about their weekend. Our friend saw us and waved us over. Our server came, took drinks. Came back with drinks, offered an appy. We got the appy to start, twenty minutes later, i called her over and asked if she forgot to punch our order in. She said it would be right out. She came out ten minutes later with said raw appy. (dough was not cooked) She said the manager is taking care of it because it took so long. Fine.

We finished our appies and were now waiting for our meals, remember it has been almost 40 minutes since we sat down. We wait another ten minutes, no food. Another table that came in after us, received their food! We were not too impressed.

My friend went to the front to ask to speak to the manager. they spoke at the front for about five minutes or so. He comes back to the table and the "manager" comes to the table and says your food is ready, do you want it? At this point, we dont want it, due to having to wait so long and the lack of insincerity within this so called manager. We say no. She says well its just gonna get thrown away so you might as well take it. I'll pack it up for you. We tell her that is not the point. She offers it to us once again and we decline.

We ask for the bill, pay for our drinks and leave. the 'manager' never once offered an apology of any sort. We brought this incident to the head office and all they did was forward us a letter that they use for everyone else.

We went there for lunch today. We were greeted by a shy hostess, she sat us at our table, didnt tell us any specials. We waited for a server to come around. A few servers were mulling about, the bartender was eating behind the bar :O Finally after a while, our server came and asked us if we were ready to order. We hadnt even gotten drinks yet. We asked for drinks and an appetizer.

He came back with our waters and then asked if we were ready. He was very abrupt and I felt like we were being rushed. We ordered. Our food came at a decent time, he never came back to check on us, until we were almost done, and at that time, I asked for the bill.

The food was excellent. I was very disatisfied with the service, but we still left a very decent tip.

What happened to this place? We have been going there for quite some time now. We have a regular waitress who apparantly quit. One of the reasons why we kept going back, and for the food as well. They always have different waitresses, who dont seem to know what they are doing. She brought our drinks with fortune cookie paper stuck on the glass. When we told her, she just laughed. Do they not wash their glasses? We waited 40 minutes for our food when it wasnt even busy. The cook is an angry man, he scared my kids, yelling at the other cooks to get cooking even though there were only our meals on the grill. Would maybe go back for lunch, but definately not dinner.
