Went to lunch with 3 friends, had some fabulous food. The rolls were amazing, unique, great selection and menu, just outstanding which is saying alot for the number of choices for Japanese food in Vancouver. Prices were reasonable, not cheap but decent for the quality of food you get. However, right from when we got into the restaurant, the servers acted like we were bothering and inconveniencing them. We got 3 menus, asked for a fourth, got a ton of attitude as if it were a huge annoying request and it all went down from there, asking repeatedly to refill our drinks, slow service, almost rude in attitude, just atrocious.
Upon leaving, we'd decided if we don't get service, we don't tip, we had no gratitude for the treatment we received. As we were getting up, the server came over and accused us of not paying, when we argued, she said there was a "service fee". We argued again, saying there's no service fee mentioned in the menu, and then she said "tips, 10%, it's mandatory". Once again, we're only a four person table, and the menu did not say anything about mandatory tipping. Then she says, "it's the law!!" We're local, not some poor tourists who may not know and think they're breaking the law for not tipping an abusive server!! She made a HUGE scene in the small restaurant, we were so shocked we just left. Something VERY wrong is going on if she thinks it's appropriate to treat people like that and then get mad when she doesn't get a tip.
I loved the restaurant, but will never go back unless for take-out, to avoid the miserable treatment, I'd suggest you do the same.
