Well, I went back
Submitted Saturday, September 8, 2007 - 5:19pm [Dine in]

Two years later, and I thought the place has really gone downhill. Prices are up and the food is down. I asked, and I was told it's owned by the same people. You could have fooled me. Gone is the friendly service, the blackboard-style menu (they now have printed menus) and the atmosphere. The word is "tired". I was truly disappointed.

Nothing to write homa about
Submitted Friday, April 27, 2007 - 9:18am [Dine in]

I went here for the first time recently, not knowing what to expect. The server was very attentive but not pushy, but the food was rather disappointing. It would have been in the not bad at all category except for the chicken gravy on the quesadillas! Afterwards all I could taste was that gravy, and it wasn't the home-made variety, either. Other than that, it would have been fine but not really noteworthy. $20.00 for one dinner and one beer.

No way
Submitted Monday, January 22, 2007 - 1:19pm [Dine in]

First of all, the name of this place is Uncle Fateh's, not Uncle Faith's. More important, though, is that I have eaten here twice, and both times the crust was gummy (undercooked). Maybe they hurry things when they are busy, I don't know. What I do know is that twice is enough.

Not fabulous
Submitted Thursday, November 9, 2006 - 12:16pm [Dine in]

I finally went after hearing how fabulous it is. It isn't. The food is good, but not exceptional, at an average of $24.00 for entrees, $8.00 for onion soup. I do not and cannot understand why they would want to cheap out on the bread, though. Why not give your customers plenty of the cheapest thing you have? I wasn't overwhelmed by this place. Maybe there just aren't that many good restaurants in West Van.

What the Hell happened??
Submitted Monday, October 16, 2006 - 12:34pm [Dine in]

What has happened to one of the best pastry shops in town? They used to stock a wonderful selection of really good pastries - pain au chocolat, eclairs, etc. Now all I see are waffles, waffles, waffles, and the odd sandwich. I guess the [profit margin on waffles must be good. What a shame.

Definitely NOT the best pizza
Submitted Monday, October 16, 2006 - 12:29pm [Dine in]

This is NOT the best pizza in town, nor on the Drive. I can name 5 better anytime. Being a glutton for punishment, I was persuaded to go there again. "How bad could it be?" Let's say this - until the staff, especially the management, changes, I won't go there even if you are paying.

Gone downhill
Submitted Friday, September 1, 2006 - 1:20pm [Dine in]

My first complaint is that they WILL NOT put ice in your water or even offer it cold. I guess they want to sell you something to drink. The menu is same-old, same-old, and Ive been going there for years. The whold place, from menu to decor needs a makeover. Portions seem to have shrunk a lot. I guess success has gone to their heads.

Not designed for customers
Submitted Friday, June 23, 2006 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

If ever there were a restaurant run for the benefit of staff, this is it. Loud music, obviously chosen to please those who work here, indifferent food (by that I mena nothing to write home about) and staff who couldn't care less if you are there or not. Nice location, though.

Let the past go
Submitted Saturday, May 20, 2006 - 5:36pm [Dine in]

Trying to relive the past, I betook myself to the Tomahawk. First, the so-called Indian Art is pretty tacky. You would think that being next door to the reserve they could get the good stuff. As to the food, if you are going to charge $10.00+ for burgers, you should have the class to use real potatoes for your fries, not frozen cardboard, especially if you're trying to sound upscale with offerings like "Chicken Cordon Bleu burgers".

Not again
Submitted Tuesday, May 9, 2006 - 10:49am [Dine in]

I don't know what happened to my previous review, but anyway, I went again recently. That will be my last trip to Hy's. I was once a regular, but after trying to eat a tough piece of prime rib, that's it. I've never had so-called prime rib that wasn't tender before, and this will be the last time. I only got through half of the 12 ounce portion. I really liked the cheese bread, though.

Not cheap
Submitted Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 11:36am [Dine in]

This place is on the high side for what they offer. The food is OK, nothing to write home about, but I would emphasize that the price is rather high for what you get. Also, (I have eaten here several times), you sometimes don't get what you ordered. Are the words for "chicken" and "beef" similar in Chinese?

Not on purpose
Submitted Sunday, March 26, 2006 - 12:00pm [Dine in]

If you happen to park right in front or the bus lets you off a few steps away and you're hungry, then try Helen's. Otherwise, ther's no reason to go there. The food is absolutely nothing to write home about. Those frozen potato chips give me the willies. Being so dry, you would think they'd soak up gravy or vinegar, but they don't. I think everything here is from packages or frozen.

Not nice
Submitted Tuesday, March 21, 2006 - 9:06am [Dine in]

I actually feel sorry for people who eat here. I've been there twice, the second time because my friends wouldn't believe what I said. They do now! When we approached the roast beef, the staff seemed to panic (there was no-one serving it, so we thought you just help yourself), and they rushed over to make sure we didn't take too much. The selection of food items consists of a LOT of tofu in various guises, bland soup, and the ice cream looks like it was previously handled by children with dirty hands. Not nice.

I can't think of anything to fault here. The food is fresh, freshly prepared and authentic. It's well worth a visit if you're in the neighbourhood, and even if you aren't. I'd make a special trip to the North Shore for this one.

A little variable
Submitted Sunday, February 26, 2006 - 10:24am [Dine in]

I have probably eaten here 50 times since it opened. In fact, I was there the day they opened. I still like it, but there is some variation in the dishes, depending on who is in the kitchen. One time the sauce will be perfect; the next it will be watery. I normally enjoy the pan-fried dumplings, but the last time they were somewhat burned, and not nice. Very nice staff, and they really know how to make noodles.

Thia isn't the new-fangled thin crust, chanterelle mushroom, would you like our smoked salmon special kind of pizzaria. This is the kind that has a lot of meat toppings and the crust is thick and chewy. I like it.

Could they possibly place the tables even closer together and squeeze more money out of their patrons? I'm sure they've thought about it. In fact, it looks as if that's all they've thought about. You can't get by on view alone, you guys. I felt like someone could reach over and try something from my plate, not that they would want to.

The secret's out
Submitted Monday, January 30, 2006 - 9:45am [Dine in]

I'm almost afraid to write about this place because I don't want to deal with a crowd, but they really deserve a good review. I've been there several times (open for lunch only) and I can honestly say the food is the best value around. The staff is all trainees, supervised by professionals, and they are really learning to cook and serve. I have friends who won't eat some dishes anywhere else because the others can't compare. Simple but good, and the staff really care about your opinion. That alone is refreshing.

Best in the area
Submitted Monday, January 30, 2006 - 9:36am [Dine in]

This is by far the best pizzaria on the Drive. The place across the street has a fancier setting, but the food is not up to it. The pizza here is excellent, as are the pasta dishes. Friendly service (another thing that sets them apart from their neighbour), reasonable prices and GOOD food. I'd stand in line for this place any day.

Not up to the decor
Submitted Friday, January 27, 2006 - 11:13pm [Dine in]

This place is new to the Drive but there's another location in Vancouver. The decor is excellent, just what a diner should be. The food, on the other hand, isn't. I had a burger that promised to be "Big Daddy, just like the 50's". What I got was two overcooked, hard as a rock, small patties with not much relish or anything else and chips that could have come from anywhere. OK, they weren't the frozen variety, but they weren't all that good, either. Also, I don't think they used rosemary (or whatever it was) to flavour the meat in the 50's. Sorry, not worth a special trip.
