I would acknowledge that everything but the food is at best medicre, but the dishes we had were outstanding. The drag noodle and black bean sauce and onion pancake was more than enough for two hungry people and we really did not need the small hot and sour soup we also ordered. Indeed, we took home a good amount of both the soup and the noodles.
I had eaten at the Sha Lin some time ago and while I remember the food been decent, our meal today really surprised us.
While the service was not overtly spectacular at the same time it wasn't aggressively in-your-face bad.
This has become my go-to place in Ladner for Greek food, although there is an other place in town that is almost as good.
The souvlaki specials are generous and never disappointing either in quality or value and the accompanying Greek salad is just as good and almost entry- size.
Went there last night for pickup and the place was packed, in fact the parking lot was packed. The interior was recently re-done and while I have never eaten in, it's something I plan to do in the future. As for the service on pickup, I have never had a problem.
I was gifted a meal here and was expecting an ok meal and decent service. What I got was a truly outstanding meal with corresponding service. I had one of their signature salad, a couple of appetizers and a very well-mixed cocktail. The service was crisp, knowledgeable and friendly without being cloying or oppressive and the washroom was immaculate in terms of design and cleanliness.
I always that that Earl's was a half a cut above White Spot,; this place gives Joe Fortes a run for it's money.
We went to this place on a two for one Entertainment Book deal and that made the dining experience at the very least passable. The good news is that it was an eayc buffet and there was an endless supply of food including dessert-type food. The bad news is that all that we sampled was at best mediocre some verging on poor. At regular price I cannot recommend this place as the food value ambelience are mediocre at best and value is poor.
This place continues to impress. Had their Spider Roll the other day (soft shell crab) for 6 bucks. Very filling and great value. Their combos are all excellent value, and I personally love the ambience and service. Dining here is a wonderful experience.
The place has an energy that is infectious and as a repeat customer I feel like I am walking into a good friend's place or even family.... Joon is the hostess and Ms Tokyo Joe...... Tokyo Joon.... I guess and I find her exuberance part of the dining experience. For 10 bucks I always leave as satisfied or more satisfied as I do leaving an ayce.
Perhaps my expectations were overheated, but on a Sunday afternoon I visited with my family. The service was the first thing I noticed or rather didn't notice. It was at best perfunctory, verging on indifference. The burgers came basically with a plate, and they distinguished themselves by their mediocracy. Even the fabled milkshake was just ok and sub-par on a value basis.
Bottomline, mediocre food, indifferent service and not much value wrapped up in an ok ambiance.
Revisited this place for lunch and the quality and flavor of the food remained incredible. In my August 15 review a commented that the meal came without tea. On this occasion tea was provided. I had a spicy tuna roll ensemble that left me more than satisfied, in fact stuffed.
My only critical comment was that while the service was crisp and attentive, I could not in any way characterize it as overly friendly.
On one of my frequent reviews of DineHere the reviews of Kon Thai caught my eye and I was more than a little intrigued. Indeed, the place was basically in the neighbourhood that I live so I thought I would give it a try. The first time was disappointing not with respect to the food but because for whatever reason on that day it was not open for lunch.
Indeed, the second try at visiting the place was successful from every perspective.
Myself and my spouse treated an other couple to dinner at Kon Thai and there was not one person in the group who was not jaw-droppingly astounded at the quality and value of the meal.
It was truly that "incredible".
We had a couple of appetizers, shrimp cakes and as well an eloquent variation of breaded shrimps, Tom Yum Goon soup, red curry beef, a wonderfully aromatic stir fry of chicken, cashews, chillies etc, and of course Pad Thai with jasmine rice for the table.
The total bill $61.56 not including tip.
The service was wonderfully prompt and attentive without being intrusive and our waiter was excellent at providing us the information we required to make our choices from both a culinary and quantity perspective.
I have spent several months in Thailand not as a tourist but in the course of my professional career and have developed a decent of not excellent appreciation of Thai cooking.
On that basis I can state with confidence that this dinning experience was one of the best I have had with respect to Thai cusine. While it might be overstatement to say it was the best Thai meal I ever its not hyperbole to state that that I have never tested more delicious Tom Yum Goon; nor is at an overstatement that this is the best Thai food I have had in Vancouver.
As perhaps a foreboding footnote it I was informed by one of the staff that the HST is killing this place and it may not be around much longer; so if you are intrigued by the collectively outstanding reviews of this place and love Thai cooking you may not want to wait to experience place.
Got invIted out to this place so I didn't pick up the tab but I was still resentful of having to actually dine here. I am not a sushi snob and enjoy cheap sushi both from takeout joints and the mass-production AYCEs. The sushi is not only sub-par but the variety is restrictive and many of the Japanese classics are not offered. The service was at best indifferent. I don't unqualified bad reviews very often (in fact almost never as I am very forgiving), but this place has earned this one.
This place has gotten even better with sparkling clean new washrooms & even the waitresses seem happier...though they were still great before. Great food with ridicously huge servings.
I challenge any average person to feel even remotely hungry after finishing the lunch special that includes a decent size soup and rice or noodles. Their prices have not risen on the basis of the HST; and on most days the have all-day dim sum though not an extensive variety. Generally parking is not a problem. And for those On Lok fans, Hoys leaves On Lok in the dust.
Enjoy

Came on the basis of great reviews so expectations very high. My gf had a huge teriyaki ydon plate that she thoroughly enjoyed. I had a sushi combo that was exceptionally satisfying. We shared a soft-shell crab that was sublime. Every patron in the dinner seemed to be sharing our experience. Decor far from eloquent or even upscale but all else including device makes up for the modest setting.
In Ladner, there is not a whole lot of choice with respect to restaurants so it a pity that I have to confirm the miserable service other reviewers have confirmed.
The sushi is indeed first-rate, and I do on occasion still eat there but the service is at best indifferent and at worst graceless.
My buddy invited my spouse and I for all-you-can-eat-ribs at Montanas and on the morning of our dinner date, I recited some of the last-than-positive reviews about this place. He advised that the place had never let him down and he was right in spades. He and I had the ribs and even on the initial serving I was unbelievable stuffed. The only reason I had seconds and thirds that were served in a timely manner is that the ribs were so damn good and I literally could not stop eating them. In fact I loved them so much as well as the service that picked up the tab.
Was it cheap??????
Absolutely not... our spouses had more modest entrees that were equally enjoyed though not with the same gusto. No room for desserts and no drinks were consumed except for two coffees. With tip the bill came to $95 but it was worth it....
I love good ribs and have experienced many a good plate of same..... but these were second to none I have ever had.
I actually found the serving staff overly happy and accommodating almost to the point of becoming curiously irritating. That stated, the sausage I had was outstanding though it was surpassed by the fries which can only be described as sublime. The atmosphere may not be for every one, given that there is a edginess to the place that may be off-putting. Plus, the cost of a single sausage and bun is not cheap. That stated, its an interesting dining experience all round and I highly recommend.
I have been going to Yokohama for about 7 years and have never had anything close to a bad dining experience. Perhaps because I am a regular and made to feel like family when I come, I am given enhanced service.... But I love the place and even the kitsyness of the decor works for me....
Is the quality of the food outstanding.... ? Probably not.... but at the very worst its solid and with the excellent value and service it all adds up to a great dining experience...
While the presentation was excellent, and the food was at worst solid, there was nothing outstanding about this place.... On a blind test taste I am confident that I could not discern a qualitative difference between Tojo's and an AYCA sushi place..... though I concede perhaps someone with a far more refined pallet may be able to do so.
The last time I visited this place, I was more astounded with the cost of the meal and I was with either the food or service. I will not return. I just don't feel the price, especially in this economy, is anywhere near justifiable.
The quality is excellent but you pay for it. So what what else is new? But while the cost of the dishes cannot be considered trifling, the size of each dim sum is huge. In fact, where I would generally require two servings of Ha Gow [shrimp dumplings] to satisfy me.... one sufficed at Red Star. The decor is very up-scale and the location [South Granville] as a lot to offer. If you only want to sample a few dishes, you will find both the quality and value to your liking.
