Great Burger in the Neighborhood
Submitted Tuesday, August 30, 2011 - 7:23pm [Dine in]

Burger joints are all the rage in Toronto these days, but this one is doing it right. Focusing on a quality burger and great homemade add-ons makes this one of the best burgers I have had in recent times.

They have a number of specialty burgers, or you can go with the classic - a 7 ounce, local, naturally raised beef burger. (They also have chicken and veggie!). It's cooked on a wood fired grill, and then you get to pick from a wide selection of condiments, sauces and add-ons. Put it all together and it's a WOW - Great Burger.

Some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever had as well.

Service is decent, you get your burger efficiently, even when it is busy, which it often is in the evening. Don't expect much hand holding :)

Not a big place, but plenty of seating. The "closeness" of the interior adds to the personality of the place. Nice patio too. Our one complaint was that the patio was close to the garbage bins and on the hot summer day the odor was a bit strong - a hard situation to avoid for small urban restaurants.

This is now my go-to burger place in Toronto. I love having it in my neighborhood.

A Québécois Delight in Mimico
Submitted Monday, August 29, 2011 - 6:32pm [Dine in]

We've dined at Cafe du Lac several times. Each time has been a very good experience. I'm a big fan of Quebec cuisine to start with, but have come to terms with experiencing it every few years with a trip to Quebec. When we moved to Mimico a few years ago, we were delighted to find this little establishment.

Service is super. Kathryn always makes you feel at home when you arrive. Cafe du Lac has a great "local hang out" feel to it, but the service is also very professional.

The food, this is what we come for. Delicious. I personally recommend the steak frites, it's great every time. The "Canard dans une jarre" is a must try as well. They have very well put together tasting menus if you are undecided. Oh yes and don't forget the poutine! Wash it all down with a local Great Lakes brewery beer on tap, or a Blanche De Chambly.

It's a great evening, you'll leave satisfied and discussing your meal for days afterwards.

Service and Menu Creativity Make the Difference
Submitted Sunday, October 30, 2005 - 5:04pm [Dine in]

Great food and outstanding service. They make me feel at home each time i drop by. Always a new dish on the menu, and if you ask your server, there are always a few great dishes off the menu. There are many places that serve these types of dishes around town, the two things that set this place apart are the service and their creativity. Salmon carpaccio and the inagi tempura roll - try them!

Great Italian with a West Coast feel
Submitted Sunday, October 30, 2005 - 11:51am [Dine in]

Solid dining experience. We had reservations for 8 on Saturday night, had the best seat in house (corner by the big windows). I would say they were at 1/2 to 2/3 capacity. Good Italian setting.

Impressive wine list - we had a number of 1/2 liters, of which there are a number of good ones to pick from and they were not expensive. Appys - Spicy calamari and big mussels - both great. Pasta as the main course, they also offer lots of meat and seafood dishes. A well portioned and great tasting desert - rich chocolate.

Service was solid. Courses were well timed. Very attentive to our dining needs. We seemed to have multiple servers, which I was not a huge fan of.

The setting is nice. Italian. Open style floor plan. Clean. Perhaps a bit more volume on the music to enhance the mood?

We left with full bellies and a good feeling about this place. Check it out.

Solid Choice for Sushi
Submitted Monday, October 24, 2005 - 7:35am [Dine in]

Akira does not strive to be the best sushi bar in town, but they are a great choice for a good price. Quick and friendly service, convenient location and fresh, well prepared sushi will make this a regular choice for me. I recommend trying it out!

Great Salad Bar
Submitted Sunday, October 16, 2005 - 2:18pm [Dine in]

If you are looking for a quick, healthy bite to eat, stop by Capers. They have a large deli of fresh meats, fish and salad dishes. Fresh juice, coffee drinks and a Grade A salad bar. Great for picking up a few groceries, enjoying a salad and reading the paper. The Salad bar is full of fresh organic produce along with a selection of Caper's own creations. A good location within a 5 minute walk for thousands of West-Enders. Nice patio, with heaters and cover. Perhaps a bit pricey for some people's taste, but you are getting what you pay for.

What happened to this place?
Submitted Sunday, October 16, 2005 - 12:06pm [Dine in]

One of two things has happened to Shiru-Bay. They are either overwhelmed by the demand and can't keep up, or they feel they do not have to keep their customers happy. Food is great, but in a town where this fare is increasingly popular, they are going to have to do better than they are. Dishes were often over 30 mnutes apart, drinks were often empty. The only real response from our server was "It's my last night". It is a nice place to be in, but electrical problems with the lights, an overused playlist and 90's dance music didn't do much for my digestion. I won't be back for a while, but I'm sure they will keep lining people up at the door, for a while anyhow....

Unique Dishes
Submitted Sunday, September 25, 2005 - 2:31pm [Dine in]

I was full before I knew it. I've eaten Izakaya in Vancouver often - Guu with Garlic has a knack for creating slightly unique dishes. I don't eat meat often, but they had enough fish on the menu to keep me asking for more dishes until I was full. Excellent Grilled Saba. Service is solid, no complaints at all. Lots of loud orders and greetings heard throughout the restaurant. This place is small, and quite frequently lined op out the door. I enjoy the experience...and the food. No Sapporo beer?

Service Makes the Difference
Submitted Friday, September 2, 2005 - 11:18am [Dine in]

Feeling a bit bored with eating out lately, until we went here! Solid food, great service. Decor is very basic, but clean and spacious. We ate a large meal, green curry, pad thai and very tasty garlic spinach. We were served by the owner, and he did it just right. If you want something you don't see on the menu, just ask.

I will be back. With a party.

On the way home!
Submitted Friday, March 11, 2005 - 12:56am [Dine in]

Felt like Indian Food on the way home and this place fit the bill well. Great location, quick and courteous service. Food is very good, some of the best authentic Indian food I have had in the this city. Price is a tad high, but I bet so is rent in this location. Ambiance, good, not stellar, this place is very small, which is typical of the restaurants in this area. I will go back for sure, and no doubt i will pick up dinner on the way home from there again.

Subeez is a great place to meet, hassle free and enjoy your company. Good selection on drinks, well made coffee and and a solid menu. Lots of cool kats hang out here, i felt like one. My last visit I had some vegetable gyoza and a few bourbon sours and chatted up a storm. No complaints at all. Nice tunes.

Oh ya, and the food was AWESOME!
Submitted Tuesday, February 15, 2005 - 1:15am [Dine in]

This place did it completely for me. Nothing else they could have done to make it a better experience. The aspect that will make me rave the loudest is how customer oriented the staff were. Polite, helpful, it was all about me. Other restauranteurs take note!

Very classy joint too I had the opportunity to look around a bit as they were closing. Fantastic setup. It had a great affect on my eating experience.

A good meal, not going back.
Submitted Tuesday, February 15, 2005 - 1:04am [Dine in]

This was a good meal, but I found the level of service and ambiance not justifying the the price I paid.

Very good quality and good presentation sushi and japanese food. I enjoyed every dish. We had several great rolls and what I would consider exotic small dishes. Yummy stuff.

Service was not super. I will admit it was busy, but we just were not getting the attention that we needed or that I wanted.

The ambiance is definitely a japanese style, but they need something to make it a little more compelling to customers. A bit plain?

There are some great other places in the city serving up this type and quality of fare for a better price.

I walk by it everyday!
Submitted Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 9:21am [Dine in]

This is a place that i walk by everyday. For the 1st time last night, we went in to check it out. Very busy from 7 to 9 or so, we waited about 20 minutes to get in. Well worth the wait.

The food? Great izaka-ya, simple small dishes, we put back 6 of them without much problem. Great taste, and good presentation. This could be my favorite izaka-ya in Vancouver. The price is good too, 6 dishes and a couple big beers cost us under $60

The Service? They did pretty well considering it was packed full. A little slow when we arrived, but that was when they were at their busiest. Once the ball got rolling, they were very competent and courteous.

The Ambiance? I like it. Not fancy at all, almost diner style (Japanese diner if there is such a thing). Shoes off, not a tonne of space, but it makes a very cozy atmosphere. They focus on the food here, and perhaps not so much on the surroundings. Functional.

I will go back for sure, it is close by and an easy place to catch a good bite.

The Vancouver Vegetarian Standard
Submitted Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 6:59pm [Dine in]

If you enjoy a vegetarian meal, this is a great choice. They have been open for a long time, and you can tell. They know what they make and they make it very well. The Miso Gravy is world famous I would say. The service is solid, but don't expect it to be too cute. Ambiance is very fitting for the area and for the menu. Overall two thumbs up! My personal favorite is some sesame fries with Miso Gravy, followed by a Dragon Bowl. It all goes down very well with a mug full of IPA. Even a seasoned meat eater will enjoy their trip to the Naam!

Good Hearty Meal - Room Temperature A Challenge
Submitted Saturday, November 13, 2004 - 6:51pm [Dine in]

I have been there too times, once we had to leave because it was too hot (mid summer, everywhere was hot). This past time, we had a good meal, lots of food - we stuck on the appetizer menu and ordered lots. The service was good, they were eager to please us. It was a cold night and we sat close to the door, and i froze. A great place to go and a day when it is nice outside!
