Famous Warehouse, The989 Granville Street, Vancouver
Interesting...but a little odd

Truth be told, I only come here for either the all you can eat taco Tuesday or $0.15 wings on Wednesday. But because the food is so cheap they do charge a little more for the drinks. As for the peanut shells, I like it because you can grab all the peanuts you want out of the barrel. Sorry, but I'm not a bar snob when it comes to nuts. The food is edible, the place is unkempt and it could best be described as a dive bar that is a step above a dive bar. Cheap food though and one of the only places that does all you can eat hamburgers on mondays and all you can eat tacos. Just expect to pay more for your drinks

Double One Chinese Restaurant4057 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Decent Cheap Chinese Food
Submitted Sunday, May 17, 2009 - 1:16am [Dine in]

The lunch specials here are awesome. From $4.50-$5.50 a dish, you can get your favorite dishes a-la-carte.

The food is just as good as any other cantonese style Chinese retaurant, the service is alright, not the best, but ok for what it is and the furniture has probably seen better days. But for $4.50 for a plate full of sweet and sour pork on rice or chow mein or fried rice or whatever, it is hard to beat for value.

Gilmore Restaurant4015 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Old World Charm

For a blast from the past, try the Gilmore Restaurant. It actually makes you feel like you're back in an old Canadian Chinese restaurant from the 70's/80's. With that said, the prices are very decent and probably still comparable to those from the 80's, and the portions are huge for the price you pay.

If you're looking for cheap eats, this restaurant is consistently listed in the Province and the Burnaby Now for Cheap and Decent. If you haven't tried it, I would recommend any of the lunch specials that run from $5.50 from 12-3 on Monday-Friday. Their weekend specials are not bad either and you get a soup or salad with the specials.

The dinner specials are not bad either. It's the only place where you can still get a 6-10oz steak for less than $14.

As for the service, well it's family owned and operated and they work hard at it. So cheap and decent would best characterize this place the best.

I give the food a 2 because it is decent/solid in my opinion. The service is good and I'm served very promplty. Value wise, for $5.50 for a burger, fries and soup, I can't really beat it anywhere else. And a steak dinner for less than $14 is still hard to do anywhere else these days. Ambiance rating of 3 is because the furniture, booths, tables and chairs are dated...from the 70's or 80's. It's kinda like being in a restaurant from the TV shows Dallas, the Duke's of Hazzard or Knight Rider.

Romana Pizza & Steak House4660 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Awesome Calamari, Meat, Pizza and Dessert
Submitted Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 5:57pm [Dine in]

I've been coming to this restaurant for years and am surprised that there are not more reviews of this restaurant. Romana's been in North Burnaby for over 36 years- the oldest independently run family restaurant restaurant in Burnaby.

I'm giving the food rating a 5 because the Kalamari is perfect. I don't know what it is, but you have to taste it for yourself and compare it to other restaurants. They cook it just the right way where there isn't any grease and it's just light and fluffy. their meat dishes are very tender and succulent. Most of their meat dishes would fall off the bone if they were still attached to it. (I had a chicken dish from their 1973 menu and my friend had the chicken souvlaki.) And the dessert just melts in your mouth. I would highly recomend the eck mech.

As for my 5 rating on the service, this is all because of Poppy. The owner serves you with a greeting like any old friend would. It's no wonder why this restaurant has been around for 35 years with Poppy at the helm. i would doubt many restaurants would have that consistency of service over that long of a time frame.

For the quality of food you are getting, I think that pricing was very fair. You are paying for a quality meal, with decent sized portions. Most dishes are priced appropriately based on my comparison with other restaurants. The Calamari, I first thought was slightly above average pricewise until I noticed that all they have on their Calamari dish is lots and lots of squid. Every time I buy Calamri somewhere else, they use a lettuce leaf or other vegetable to dress the dish so that there is fewer squids. This place doesn't. They just give you a heaping full of perfect Calamari.

As for the ambiance rating, it could be described as a traditional mediterranean restaurant. The candle lights and old world tavern feel is accented by the colored masonary walls and floors make this place feel like you're in another part of the world-one with beautiful ocean beaches at night.
