Salmon House2229 Folkestone Way, West Vancouver
a west coast experience
Submitted Sunday, January 4, 2009 - 5:49pm [Dine in]

The Salmon House, with its sweeping views of Vancouver, native art, and local cuisine, is a special place to take out of town guests. The alderwood smoked salmon is outstanding. On our most recent visit, everyone got the 3-course menu, and we were treated to exceptional desserts, so the pastry chef is excellent too. Our waiter was a bit grumpy and couldn't understand when I pronounced "pot de creme," a French dessert, in French and said I had asked for pudding. Perhaps a brush up for the wait staff on what is on the men is in order. Service was generally OK but not up to the quality of the food. Still, I'll be back and lok forward to it.

Great location, cute place...but very unremarkable food and disinterested service. This really feels like a tourist location. The restaurant seems to advertise quite a bit, and this leads to people being are lured in, but I get the sense that the staff never expects you to return. Given the many excellent choices for Greek food nearby, including one right across the street, I won't be back.

This restaurant has only been open for a little while, and when we visited, the learning curve was quite evident. The wine we wanted had not been delivered, and the charming waitress had a hard time answering our questions and explaining what some of the menu items were. We had to take our best guess. I wouldn't recommend sitting on the outside, as we did, since you're just about on the sidewalk, and the noise of traffic and dust and dirt don't add up to a pleasant dining experience. The inside is a bit overdecorated for my taste but would surely be more comfortable. The food is not traditional Greek (at least Vancouver style) and you won't find all your favorites. The vegetarian moussaka was decidedly unusual. It's worth another visit.

and while the food was excellent, the several hours it took to get to us was not. I know there was a big party nearby and there were only two of us, but you did take our reservation! The location is lovely and the menu options solid if not particularly innovative. I'll give the restaurant another try but there are lots of other good options to visit before then.
