Why so empty?
Submitted Sunday, August 19, 2007 - 10:37pm [Dine in]

I went to So.Cial for a special occasion dinner on a Saturday night and was surprised to find it nearly empty. The service was excellent, as was the food. The building restoration is full of period character with a great people-watching view. If it had been full, it may have been a bit noisy as the tables are quite close together.

The oysters were delicious and the Tuna appetizer was enough to share. The pork entree was juicy with excellent vegetable sides. The prices were higher than those posted on the website (closer to $30 instead of $20) and we were charged $12 more for one entree than the posted price, but the waiter cleared it up for us (suspicious though...). Dessert (goat cheesecake), wine (list could be more BC-heavy for a local-food restaurant), and coffee were very much enjoyed.

The menu is highly akin to Raincity and Ocean Six 17, as the owners or chef are from there I read somewhere, but the restaurant just didn't have the same energy. I highly recommend it anyway if you want quality food elegantly prepared and presented in a unique setting.

Amazing!!

Everything is local, fresh, and responsibly sourced. This little restaurant is cozy and inviting with knowledgeable staff and friendly service without being pretentious. The chacutterie plate is to die for as an appetizer, and our mains were very good (venison with lentils and tuna with cauliflower). The local wine list is extensive and provided some rare BC wines, and even the coffee was some of the best I've had. We received complimentary dessert wine since we were celebrating our anniversary and were treated very well from start to finish. Highly recommended!!!

More than just fish and chips

Go Fish is always busy, for good reason. It's got a beautiful location right on False Creek and terrific food. Granville Island beer-battered fish and chips as well as other seafood sandwiches come with the best cole slaw I've ever had (gingery-peanutty instead of creamy mayo-based). The small sunny patio is crowded with people hanging around to order and pick up their food, so I always get food to go and find a grassy spot in one of the many nice park spaces along the seawall to eat. A great place for tourists and locals with most meals under $10. Closed Mondays, and only open until 6:30.

Real BBQ for a Song

I've eaten in once and had take-away several times. The Elvis Platter is more than enough food for 2 for a few days for about $35! It's always packed, and you have to stand in line awkwardly at the cash register to order, but this is BBQ unlike any I've had outside of Kansas City. It's so tender, so good, and so plentiful. This place reminds you that BBQ is not just meat grilled with sauce, but a slow smoking process you just can't get at home. Good beer and wine too!

Go for the food

Absolutely the best sushi/seafood I've ever had. I took my husband for our anniversary and we both had the $80 chef's menu. They bring out course after course of the freshest and tastiest seafood followed by a giant plate of sushi rolls and nigiri. The decor isn't anything special, nor is the service (I had a post-it note with the number "1" stuck to my hand as I went in and had to wait despite having reservations). Looking at other diner's meals, I would probably get the $60 menu next time, but there will be a next time!

Saved our Night

After being rudely turned away from a busier nearby restaurant, we took a chance and took our party of 10 (family visiting from ON and FL) to this corner gem. We were seated right away, the service was amazing and energetic (not formal and stuffy), the food was as local and organic as it gets, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. I will definitely bring other guests to Ocean 6 Seventeen and go back to enjoy the patio.
