Bon's Off Broadway2451 Nanaimo St., Vancouver
Come on, it costs 3 freakin' bucks
Submitted Thursday, December 4, 2008 - 2:56am [Dine in]

Ok, less than $3 really. Bon's breakfast special costs $2.95, including tax. Is that amazing or what?

The food is what you'd expect on a breakfast platter - eggs, hashbrowns, toast, choice of ham/bacon/sausauge. Yes it only costs 2.95, but make no mistake, the portion is pretty big and the quality is great considering what you're paying.

Service is slow, because the place is always packed and there aren't enough servers around. I suspect they could hire more help, but they'd go out of business because they'd probably won't make enough money to cover labour costs.

Ambiance is what you'd expect from a diner. It's not overtly clean, but it's not the dumpiest dump I've been.

Just remember, a full meal only cost $2.95.

Les Faux Bourgeois Bistro663 E 15th Ave, Vancouver
A little jem nestled in a run down neighbourhood
Submitted Monday, December 1, 2008 - 12:59am [Dine in]

I came to Les Faux Bourgeois with not a lot of expectations, because while I love French cuisine, restaurants usually don't live up to their reputation (ahem Le Crocodile).

LFB surprised me with their pricing and the quality that accompanies the low pricing. All the entrees (all of the food items actually) are under $20! Obviously wine is an exception. The decor was very nice, not the most chic; and the ambiance was somewhat upscale, though not pretentious. Which I appreciate.

The food: I went with a few friends, so we had the cheese platter to share. I forget which combinations, but the platter came with pear slices, honey jam and dry figs! Yum! I ordered the duck confit, which was somewhat of a fail IMHO. The duck was too dry, even though it was supposed to be cooked in its own fat. We also ordered all of the desserts of the night to taste. I highly recommend their creme brulee and lemon tart. Tres délicieux.

Overall, I recommend this restaurant if you want good food in a nice setting that wouldn't empty your wallet.

Phnom Penh Restaurant244 E Georgia St, Vancouver
Overrated.

I visited the restaurant twice before I decided to review. I had the Beef Luc Lac the first time and the beef was smothered in sauce, even though the traditional version has a rather dry exterior. I also ordered the Vietnamese sour soup on both visits, and the soup tastes a like the real thing! However, the shrimp in the soup are not fresh and lack taste. The lemon grass chicken with rice was also ordered both times, and it was just really mediocre compared to other ones I've tried in a vietnamese noodle house.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The food is only decent, sometimes bordering on poor. The only thing I commend is their menu. It's probably the most diverse menu I have seen in a vietnamese restaurant.

Congee Noodle House141 E Broadway, Vancouver
Very average chinese restaurant.

I've been here once. The wonton i ordered was pretty gross. My friend had some calamari type fried squid dish, it was ok. The congee was decent. We also tried their fried noodles with some chicken and vegetables, very poorly prepared.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you happened to be in the area and you want a quick fix of food regardless of quality.

Au Wing Kee Restaurant2568 Kingsway, Vancouver
Great food for a small price!

One of my favourites is their hot and sour soup! There are a lot of ingredients and it's not too spicy! The house special wonton and noodles in soup is also very good. Definitely recommended.

The place is very clean for a chinese restaurant, and service was good. It was pretty spacious too. Highly recommended!
