Wow, what an improvement
Submitted Monday, June 8, 2009 - 10:30pm [Dine in]

I work very hard at remaining posative in life, with the amount I eat out, that is sometimes difficult. I have e aten at Lava in the past; I enjoyed the food on a basic level, the service was not good.

After eating there this weekend, finding out they are under new management, new owners and almost all new staff, I HAD A GREAT TIME. Wow, the food blew me away. Modern, beatifully presented, fantastic flavours; it was a real treat. Lava, I will be back!!

Sushi Bar Shyun2063 Lougheed Highway, Port Coquitlam
Sushi Bar Shyunexpected
Submitted Monday, May 18, 2009 - 6:38pm [Dine in]

Writely or wrongly, I keep track of these things; I have eaten in over 125 sushi restaurants from Tokyo to London, needless to say I love my sushi. They haven't all been good, in fact some of them didn't even bother to cook the fish (just kidding). I stumbled across this restaurant unexpextadley; and wow was I surprised.

I would easily rate Sushi Bar shyun in the top 5 Sushi restaurants I have ever eaten at. Talk to the chef; tell him what you feel like eating, he willcreate something unique for you. This restaurant is on the expensive side; but for a fantastic sushi experience; this is the best choice this side of Whisler Village.

Okay, I understand what they were trying to do with the menu; but they chose the strangest dishes to transform to new age comfort food. I don't have a lot to say about this place. The interior was boring, the food was boring and the service was a little boring.

I feel bad about getting my bore off on a restaurant I had such high expectations for, because I love comfort food and comfort food loves me; we just didn't see eye to eye on this ocassion.

Le Vol Au Vent14959 Marine Drive, White Rock
French on the Dinner plate is way better than French in High School
Submitted Monday, May 18, 2009 - 6:06pm [Dine in]

We ate at Le Vol Au Vent with family a few weeks ago; While I am not one for the classic French snobbery; the good people at our subject restaurant seemed as distant to that snobbery as we actually are to The Riviera. The owners, a chef and server tandem (husband and wife) were great; the food while not as good as promised by our hosts, was excellent. It was good honest food, created and served by good honest (as far as I know) people. Well worth the trip.

Kingfishers Waterfont Bar & Grill23840 River Road, Maple Ridge
like dating an ugly woman that is great in bed
Submitted Monday, May 18, 2009 - 5:51pm [Dine in]

Kingfishers; I am so confused..... They do have a wide selection of beer on tap - that is good. The Patio is great, if they would allow me to sit on the patio and drink beer all day; Kingfishers would get all 5 ratings; unfortunately I would get hungry, and have to eat, and the only menu around would be theirs......and that is where it all falls apart. When you walk in the front door; there is an air force of large flies circling the dining room; I don't know if they have come from the dirty river, or the dir... kitchen; either way, they look like they also are looking for a good seat in the dining room and are commited to flying around until the find one; thus they never land. I must be shallow, because if it wasn't for the great patio, I would never want to see Kingfisher again. OK, maybe I am being too hard on the ugly girl; If you do get a seat on the Patio, the food seems an awful lot better that it might otherwise. When the stars align; sunny day, patio seat, right menu choice and beer is flowing; Kingfishers can offer a great experience.

Firehall Bistro, The19237 122A Avenue, #104, Pitt Meadows
their P's are all wrong
Submitted Monday, May 18, 2009 - 5:24pm [Dine in]

I have dined at The Firehall Bistro a few times now; while the food is good; (not great, way too much salt, among other mostly minor issues), I just am not willing to put up with their 'P' confusion any more. The Chef and Head Waiter need to understand a couple of things: Their Restaurant is in Pitt Meadows, not Paris. Customers are looking for Pleasant service, not Pissy Waiters, and finally; While theChef truly believes he has created Paradise in the Pitt; he really has only created another Place I can go to get abused. Yes abused, I don't diferenciate between abuse by food quality or abuse by attitude. Firhall Bistro, get over yourself.

is that building still standing?
Submitted Thursday, May 29, 2008 - 5:33pm [Dine in]

i am a fan of heritage buildings, but like an old hockey player that should retire, buildings like this one should be put to rest, torn down, turned into condos, etc.

it is dark, dirty and broken up; the food is ok, but really, there are so many better places to get a very average meal.

the food is cheap, and you won't get an argument from me that you probably do get what you pay for; but personally, i would rather pay a little extra and get something i am not going to regret eating the next day.

if you have an exceptionally ugly date, you might want to try this restaurant, you probably won't be able to see her and she will think you are cheap and may not want to go out with you again.

but seriously, the food is not bad, but very far from good.

Gotham Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar615 Seymour Street, Vancouver
great people watching - foods good too
Submitted Thursday, May 29, 2008 - 5:22pm [Dine in]

I love going to Gotham, if for nothing else, watching the people arround us. I have eaten there several times, only once had an inferior meal; all other times were excellent.

Love the side dishes, love the decor, great service; the onion bread is the best bread i have had at any restaurant - ever.

my only issue, was the last time we ate there, the chef had cracked pepper and salt over my steak as part of the final garnish. well i don't like salt and really didn't want it on my steak.

other than that one little problem, i have had at least 15 to 20 great dining experiences at gotham

La Trattoria22214 Dewdney Trunk Rd., Maple Ridge
good solid meal
Submitted Thursday, May 29, 2008 - 4:09pm [Dine in]

We have eaten here many times over the years, everything is good, some things are great. the menu hasn't changed much over the years and is getting a little boring. we have never had a bad meal at trattoria.

it is a little dark inside the restaurant for my liking, it would be nice if it were a little more upbeat. the tables are a bit close together in some areas.

all in all, i enjoy eating at trattoria, there are better places in maple ridge, but it is definately in the top five.

best breakfast joint in town
Submitted Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - 8:36pm [Dine in]

sometimes simple is best. the green house cafe does breakfast to perfection. we eat there at least 3 times per month and look forward to our next breakfast each time we leave. the lattes put starbucks too shame, so so good.

omlettes are great, imaginative and tasty.

for my money, the best breakfast value in maple ridge.

Bella Vita Restaurant22471 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge
that 70's show
Submitted Wednesday, May 28, 2008 - 8:31pm [Dine in]

i am 40 years old now, i can barely remember what it was like dining out with my parents when i was 10. but if ever i should forget completely, i will just go back to the bella vita where things haven't changed since the day they opened.

it is dark, dingey and depressing. the menu is huge with nothing done well (at least nothing our table ordered). heavy sauces and steamed vegetables - food has come a long way since the 70's too bad this restaurant hasn't
